• No open flames of any kind or smoldering items are allowed, including matches, lighters, candles or incense. • Students are not allowed to have electrical appliances, including air conditioners, hot plates or pots, coffee pots, toaster ovens, microwaves or refrigerators without explicit permission from the Director of Residential Life. • Halogen lamps, high-intensity lamps and spotlights in which the bulb is tightly enclosed are prohibited. Paper and flammable plastic lampshades may not be used. • 11 th - and 12 th -grade students are allowed to have one television, VCR or DVD player and video game console per room. • At no time is cable or satellite television service allowed in student rooms. Splicing cable lines is considered stealing and is a major violation of School rules. • Three-pronged extension cords are necessary to use in order to avoid overloading outlets. • No pets are allowed on campus. • Bicycles may be stored in the appropriate areas. They may not be stored in dormitory corridors or rooms. • Athletic equipment should be stored in the locker room. • It is the obligation of every student to report dormitory damage to his/her dormitory head as soon as possible. • Students should not be present in another student’s room when the occupant is elsewhere. (Security of personal items is important, and locking one’s door when not present is the best deterrent.) • Music must be played at a volume that is considerate to others. • Cell phones may not be used during study hours or after lights-out. The School reserves the right to modify this list at any time when it is deemed to be in the best interest of the students or the School from the perspective of health, safety, respect and/or civility. Students are encouraged to take an active role in their dormitory environment through cooperation and collaboration with peers, proctors, dorm faculty and dorm heads. Local Control Every dorm has a set of rules that are unique to its particular setting. Dorm proctors, residents, staff and dorm heads should discuss, develop and modify these policies as appropriate. Every year the rules, policies and procedures in each dorm may change according to individual and collective needs and desires; however, all local policies must be consistent with the policies of the community at large. Searches – Rooms and Personal Items Tilton School retains the right to conduct a room search upon reasonable belief that a student is in possession of material that is in violation of School rules or that the existence of physical or other potential harm to the student or others will be discovered. If a faculty or staff member believes conditions exist that call for a search, they will contact the Dean of Students. The Dean will determine if a search is warranted, and the Dean or his assignee will conduct the search in the presence of the student, roommate or dormitory proctor and another faculty member (usually a dormitory staff member). There may, however, be an occasion when the School must act immediately for reasons of health and/or safety to the community and the student may not be present. In addition to room searches, if there is a reasonable belief a student may have something in his/her possession that is in violation of rules or is of a valid health concern, the School reserves the right to search backpacks, purses and other personal effects, including a noninvasive search of the person. The right to search extends to lockers as well as automobiles. Theft In the case of theft in a dormitory, a student should immediately report the theft to the dormitory faculty on duty, and as soon as possible thereafter to the Dean of Students. A comprehensive theft report must be completed, and the School will do what is reasonable to locate the missing or stolen items. In some cases, it is necessary to involve the local police department. The School assumes no responsibility for money or personal property stolen from students. Parents should check to see that they have proper coverage through individual homeowner’s insurance policies. Theft is not tolerated at Tilton School. A student found in violation of this major School rule will likely be dismissed immediately. Evening Study Hours Dormitory parents and proctors are expected to ensure quiet study conditions during study hours in the dormitory. In addition, dormitory parents and proctors are expected to establish protocols that support the productive use of study time for all students. An appropriate amount of sleep is crucial for the proper development of adolescents, thus, lights-out policies must be enforced. Faculty will remain in the dorm a minimum of a halfhour after lights-out; however, there will be supervision throughout the night and into the early morning by at least one of the resident faculty. Expectations for study conditions and lights-out vary by grade and are as follows: 9 th Grade • Study conditions in residence halls from 8 to 10 p.m. • Quiet hours in residence halls from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. • Students in their own rooms and lights out at 10:30 p.m. 20 21
10 th Grade • Study conditions in residence halls from 8 to 10 p.m. • Quiet time in residence halls from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. • Students in their own rooms and lights out at 10:45 p.m. 11 th Grade • Study conditions in residence halls from 8 to 10 p.m. • Quiet time in residence halls from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. • Social time provided in the MARC from 10 to 10:30 p.m. • Students in their own rooms and lights out at 11 p.m. 12 th Grade/PG • Study conditions in residence halls from 8 to 10 p.m. for all students during the first quarter. • Quiet time in residence halls from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. • Social time provided in the MARC from 10 to 10:30 p.m. • Students in their own rooms at 11 p.m. Day Students • Day students are expected to leave campus by the start of study hours. • Day students who remain on campus during study hours are expected to be in a specific location for a specific reason. • All day students who remain on campus past 8 p.m. on an academic evening must sign in for extended day hours with the Dean of Students. Honors Study Conditions • Students on academic/effort honors earn the privilege to determine their own study conditions in the residence hall, provided they are respectful of study conditions in the dorm. • Students may elect to have their doors closed, provided both roommates are on honors designation. Weekend Hours (Saturday) On Saturday evenings, all students must check in with the Officer of the Weekend at dinner unless prior permission has been obtained to leave campus. Students in 9 th and 10 th grades must check in with the dormitory parent on duty and be in their dormitories by 11 p.m. Students in 11 th grade must check in by 11:30 p.m., and 12 th -grade students must check in by 12 a.m. Lights out is half an hour after check-in for all classes. Visitors For security purposes, all visitors are required to check in and sign in with the Main Office Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. At all other times, visitors must check in with either the Dean of Students or the Officer of the Day. Students hosting visitors must obtain permission from the Dean of Students at least 24 hours in advance. Students must remain on campus with their guests at all times. The School holds students responsible for their guests; guests must follow the rules of Tilton School. Any visitor who violates a School rule will be asked to leave the campus and most likely will not be allowed to return. Coed Visitation Policies At Tilton, we have purposefully created a residential situation that is designated by gender and grade. In 2006, a panel of students and faculty confirmed the suitability for divisions of this nature. It was noted by the students in this panel that the needs of individuals of different ages and genders will vary greatly. It was also acknowledged that there is a need for students of all ages and genders to have time and space to build and enjoy healthy relationships. Therefore, the following policies allow for a safe and comfortable dormitory environment while empowering individuals to build relationships with their peers. In general, dormitories are always gender specific. It is always a privilege for members of the opposite gender to visit each other’s dormitories. Dormitories, including common rooms, are gender specific and are therefore subject to specific times when coed visitation is allowed. Students may visit in common rooms without specific parietal permission only as outlined below. At all other times, students must receive specific permission to visit members of the opposite sex in their dormitories. This is referred to as parietals. Students should never, on any occasion, be in the opposite gender’s dormitory between the hours of 11 p.m. and 11 a.m. Students in violation of this policy are subject to major disciplinary consequences. Parietals Regulations The on-duty dormitory parent may grant parietals provided that the student remains in the dormitory while guests of the opposite gender are visiting and that permission has been secured prior to visitation. Students of the opposite gender are permitted in another student’s room provided: • They receive prior permission from a faculty member on duty. • They sign in and out indicating whom they are visiting. • They have the dormitory room door open. • They have a door stop in place. • Lights are on.
