Cell Phones It is expected that proper cell phone etiquette will be followed at all times. The possession of cell phones and their use on campus is a convenience and privilege. Abuse of that privilege will result in appropriate consequences, which will include loss of privileges and confiscation of phones. Repeated violations will result in disciplinary consequences by the Dean of Students. The School encourages parents to review phone records, observing that use is limited to approved School times. Indicators tell us there is a correlation between tardies and absences to class and late-night activities, including cell phone use. We also ask that parents partner with the School in making sure their children do not make or receive calls, including with parents, during times that are not approved by the School. Should there be an emergency, please call the Officer of the Day/Weekend, and the School will contact the student immediately. Dorm parents may allow international students to use cell phones at special times due to differences in time zones. Disciplinary Consequences Tilton School believes that every student desires to be a respected member of the School community; furthermore, each student recognizes that fundamental rules governing personal behavior are essential to the common well being of our community. Thus, students who violate our code of conduct are subject to disciplinary consequences. The School understands that occasionally, adolescents will test boundaries and act outside of accepted community standards. When a student breaks a rule, the disciplinary action that results should commensurate with the transgression. The disciplinary consequences levied against students who act in a manner outside of community standards is not vindictive; rather, the consequences will reinforce the fact that the student made a poor choice and in the future needs to make better decisions. The following are examples of disciplinary consequences. Detention Detentions can be assigned for a variety of reasons as a means of consequence. Faculty members may assign detentions in consultation with the Dean of Students. Morning detention is held from 6 to 7 a.m. in the Computer Lab; evening detention is held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays; and Sunday detention is held from 8 to 10 a.m. On-Bounds On-bounds means that a student is not allowed to leave campus, except for School-approved trips. On-Campus Restriction On-campus restriction is a consequence that is reserved for serious infractions of School rules. On-campus restriction includes detentions as assigned, Dining Hall cleanup and/or other work details as assigned, on-bounds, loss of weekend privileges, loss of parietals, and any other restrictions as assigned by the Dean of Students. Suspension If a student is suspended from school, physical separation from the School is required. Students will be released into the custody of parents, guardians or a family member. Students also may depart by means of mass transportation, with parental approval. Dismissal Students who are dismissed from Tilton School are required to leave campus immediately. The Dean of Students will communicate with the family and facilitate the earliest departure possible. Any student dismissed or required to withdraw from Tilton School for disciplinary reasons is persona non-gratis on the campus. Should it be necessary to return to campus for any reason, prior consent must be received from the Dean of Students. Reporting Learning from Others The School believes that students benefit in learning from each other, including mistakes. Thus, the School reserves the right to communicate any issue of discipline regarding a student with the entire student body for the purpose of furthering the learning experience of the students and the overall good of the school community. Disclosure of Information Tilton School will not disclose specific details of disciplinary actions to individuals or institutions outside the Tilton community, except in situations regarding health and individual or community safety. In addition, the School is mandated to disclose certain information in order to be in compliance with local, state and federal laws. Please consult The Tilton School Handbook online for more information regarding reporting, especially compliance with the Safe Schools Act. For individuals applying to institutions of higher learning, the Tilton School policy is to disclose at the date of application through the time of graduation any change in the status of social probation, harm to self or others, academic dishonesty or dismissal. Details regarding specific incidents are not reported by the School. Students are encouraged to report specifics. Please see The Tilton School Handbook or Director of College Counseling Lisa Partridge for more information regarding reporting to colleges and universities. The Discipline Committee The Discipline Committee is a group of faculty and students charged with the responsibility of responding to rule infractions as outlined in The Tilton School Handbook. The group also can respond to philosophies, policies and practices of rules in the form of recommendations to the appropriate governance. The committee includes two faculty members appointed by the Head of School, one student elected by his/her classmates in 12 th ,11 th and 10 th grades, the President of the Student Assembly and the Dean of Students. One faculty member appointed by the Head of School and one student appointed by the President of the Student Assembly (usually the Vice President of the Student Assembly) serve as alternates. 8 9
A student may be brought before this committee by the Dean of Students or Head of School for a rule violation. A student may on his/her own request a meeting as a form of appeal for a consequence administered solely by the Dean of Students. Decisions of the Head of School are final and may not be appealed to the Discipline Committee. During these meetings, the committee determines if a violation has occurred and makes a recommendation to the Head of School or the Assistant Head of School (in his absence). This recommendation will be approved or modified prior to a final decision. The Head of School, however, may act independently of the Discipline Committee whenever he believes this course of action to be in the best interest of the student involved and/or the School community. A student who disagrees with the recommendation of the Discipline Committee may appeal to the Head of School. TECHNOLOGY The purpose of technology at Tilton School is to support research and education. The goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence at Tilton by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication. Gaile Loomis is the Director of Technology at Tilton School. All questions regarding technology should be directed to Ms. Loomis. Hardware and Software Tilton School has an extensive campus-wide wireless network; therefore, it is recommended for the sake of greater mobility that all students bring a laptop, notebook or tablet computer to school if possible. In addition: Computer Minimum Requirements: • Windows Vista or XP, MAC OS X 10 or higher, Linux Desktop SUSE, Ubuntu or other • 1 GHz Processor minimum • 1 GB RAM minimum • 100/1000 NIC Ethernet Network Card (integrated on most laptops) Please bring a CAT5 or CAT6 Ethernet Cable. • Integrated Wireless Card • USB flash drive (1 GB minimum) Required Software: Anti-Virus software is required. The software must be up-to-date and must not expire during the school year. Please call the Technology Department if you have questions regarding which anti-virus and anti-spyware software package to use. There are times when the appropriate anti-virus software is installed and a pc still becomes infected. The Technology Department will do its best to clean virus- and spyware-infected pc’s. The Technology Department does not have much success cleaning pc’s which never had anti-virus software installed. Please do not put your student in the position of having a non-working laptop because of negligence. In the event that the pc must be formatted to factory settings, please have your student bring the system restore disks which came with the pc, or have them available to send to school if the disks are needed. Each student will be required to submit documents, spreadsheets and presentations for their classes. We suggest they have Microsoft Office 2003 or higher, Office for MAC or Openoffice.org. If you would like to take advantage of the School’s Microsoft Licensing Program, please contact the Technology Department. As of this printing, Office Professional for both MAC and Windows is $79. Service and Repair If you purchase a computer or peripheral which has a warranty (strongly recommended), we will be happy to arrange shipping back to the vendor in the event it needs repair. If your warranty has onsite service, service must be arranged through the Technology Department. For safety and security, Tilton School requires technicians to work in the Technology Department or in a prearranged area where adults are present. If your computer or peripheral needs service and is out of warranty, we will do our best to repair it. Tilton School makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. If unable to fix the problem, we will suggest the student call home. We can assist in obtaining an estimate for the cost of repairs at local computer stores that offer fee-based diagnostics and repair. With your permission, we can schedule a time to drop it off. Responsible Use Policy Certain materials available on the Internet are inherently inappropriate for student use, and Tilton School has a policy of filtering offensive material from the Internet. Examples include material that is of an obscene nature or that advocates violence or discrimination. If there is a need to access blocked sites for educational research, students must have their teacher contact the Technology Department. The Internet is actively monitored by Tilton School, especially social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, and students are held accountable for the content of their communication. While using the School network, all use is identified and logged. The use of the network must be congruent with Tilton School’s values regarding proper behavior and conduct. Community standards that govern the behaviors, actions and statements as explained in The Tilton School Handbook and The Handbook Guide are in effect at all times and places, real or virtual. Tilton School will not tolerate inflammatory communication of any kind based on race or color, religion, sex, handicap, age, sexual orientation, or country of ancestral origin.
