The Staircase to Success
By Kwok See Lam Clara
We may come across the word “success” many times in our lives, and the word may have
different meanings to different people. In general,
we often have to go through several steps in order
to become “successful” and we have to climb a
flight of steps in order to reach the top of the “staircase
to success”. Let’s see what the essential main
steps are to success.
The first step is to work hard and pay attention
in class. This is a good and effective way to get
good results in examinations. If you make a clear
success of passing examinations, it is easier for
Why wait for the lift when you can you to apply for higher levels of education
take the "Staircase to Success"?
and to establish further and better prospects.
CIE Sports Festival 2004
By Tiger Ku Man Lok
The College of International Education
Student Society (CIESS)
successfully organized the CIE
Sport Festival 2004, held between
October and December. This big
event in CIE attracted over 350
CIE student participants. Activities
included in the Sport Festival
were HKBU Swimming Gala,
Athletics Meet, CIE Boys and
Girls Badminton Competition,
Table-tennis Competition and
Football Competition. This was
the first time that the badminton
and table-tennis competitions were included, therefore these competitions attracted many
students to join. Furthermore, the CIE football competition created a new CIE Student
Society record for the number of teams that participated, 18 teams joined the competition.
In fact, the festival attracted many students, and the referees were very professional.
Exposure of Hong Kong Photography
By Kam Wing Man, Angel; Leung Ka Man; Wong Chun Yin, Al
The Gold Prize of the Color section in the HK Photography Contest was given to a CIE student! This is the largest annual
activity of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Photograph Association. This contest has been held successfully every
year since 1979.
There were two notable aspects of the contest this year. First, 555 photos
were received in the Color section; this number broke the record for
the last 25 years. The other notable aspect was the Gold Prize of the
Color section was won by a HKBU student, Leung Siu Ting, who is one
of the committee members of the Photograph Association. The title of
his photo was “Sea Shell”. The adjudicators named him as the glory of
HKBU since there has not been an HKBU student that won the Gold
Prize for several years. For the Black and White section, the Gold Prize
was won by a City University student, Hui Yau Tak. The title of his
photo was “Fishing”. The adjudicators praised him as a creative photographer.
This year, the
judging was held Hong Kong Baptist University Photograph Association
on 26 February
at LT3 in Ho Sin Hang Campus. Ten adjudicators were invited to judge
the participants’ photos. One of them was Mr. Ho Chit Chuen, who is
an enthusiastic and experienced photographer.
Two exhibitions were held for the contestants' work. One inside HKBU
after the prize-awarding ceremony, 2 April to 8 April 2005; the other
was held in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 16 April to 22 April
2005. Both exhibitions were free of charge and open to all.
This contest could give you a chance to show your photography talent
to the public and improve your skill in photography. If you are interested
in photography, please take part in next year’s Hong Kong Pho-
Adjudicators in action
tography Contest. The adjudicators will confirm your talent!
SIZE DOES MATTER, but…
By Justin Yuen Wen Jing
In playing basketball I have learnt something more than just basketball and
that is in the sports world: “SIZE DOES MATTER”. Especially in the more
physical contact sports, one’s height would very much limit one’s performance.
Basketball is no doubt a “taller the better” sport. If you are taller, you can
have better views for passing the ball, a higher chance of getting the rebound
and blocking shots, and most importantly you might be able to score by the
coolest way—slam dunk.
I understand all this, but it doesn’t stop me from playing basketball, since I
realize that ‘short people can play’. My favorite basketball player Earl Boykins
is only 5’5”, 133 lbs; he is actually even ‘smaller’ than me. Though he stands on
the court with people averaging 6’6” in the NBA, he is one of the best point
guards in the league. He runs fast on the court, his passing skills are top class,
his mid-range jumper hardly misses, and he is one of the fastest dribblers.
With a lot of practice and most importantly a strong mind, something, everyone
thought to be impossible, can actually happen. Whenever I see him play
against bigger players, it reminds me that nothing is impossible, as long as I
put effort into it.
Sports Festival
From Page 1
“This is the first time that we have had a Sport Festival at CIE. Our
aim is to provide a professional sport competition for our CIE students
to show their sport ability, and through the different competitions
to strengthen the relationships between our schoolmates,” said
Gilbert Lo, CIESS Sport and Recreation Officer.
It was a surprise that the level of the competition was very high.
Many of the athletes were either school team members at HKBU or
school team members when they studied in secondary school. We
can conclude that there are many outstanding athletes in our college.
In the HKBU Swimming Gala and Athletics Meet, our CIESS representatives
gave outstanding performances, they were the overall champion
in the swimming gala and overall first runner-up in the Athletics
Meet. In the CIE Boys and Girls Badminton Competition, Alan Kwok and Ho Pui Man played smooth games and were
crowned champions. In the table tennis competition, Felix Kar and Yu Ho Ming had an exciting final match, Felix Kar became
the champion in the end. Lastly, in the CIE football competition, Kenji Ip led his team “Yan SheungShu” to the final round; in
the end, Yan SheungShu defeated the SRS team and Explode Egg Party (EEP) Representative Team in the final stage and
became the CIE football Competition Champion. Kenji Ip also got the MVP with his 15 goals in the competition.
Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World
By Yung, Ellen, Liligram, Justin
Spring is a good time for watching love films. The film “Crying Out Love, In the
Center of the World” uses recording tapes to bring out a love story of a couple in
their youth. At the same time it tells of the relationship of a man with two women
with many touching scenes.
This Japanese film explores a man’s memories about his girlfriend that died years
before as a result of a disease. “Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World”
alternates between the lost love of the past and the brave love of the present, which
enhances the plot immensely. The pure love content of the film touches the heart of
many.
Singing Contest
From Page 1
The singers’ performances were extraordinary, definite Hong Kong idol material. The
participants had prepared hard for the final; they all had wonderful performances.
We were delighted by the champions of the single and group contestants: Jennifer Li,
Don Chan and Emily Li. Jennifer handled the difficulty of her song well, and exhibited
great emotion through her euphonic voice. The group participants, Don and Emily,
were brilliant doing their performance.
Their rapping was just so impressive to
the audience, and the atmosphere built
up to an amazing climax! The audience
was definitely attracted by their calmness
and charm. Some even spontaneously
stood and clapped during the performance.
Although it was a drippy and cold night, the audience was very hot as the
participants gave us a very energetic performance. Of course, it was a fantastic
show. CIESS should hold functions like this for CIE students. Thanks!
Hall Canteen: A Culinary Review
By Karen, Michelle, Phoebe, Kenneth, Stanley
CIE students mainly study in the SCE tower, and the Hall Canteen is
one of the closest eating venues to the SCE tower. That’s why most of
the students will eat in the Hall Canteen. Most students would say that
the Hall Canteen provides a very good place for getting together. We
frequently eat and spend quite a lot of time in the Hall Canteen. That’s
why we are concerned about the food quality, the service and the environment
of the Hall Canteen very much. Here is our review of the Hall
Canteen; five stars is superb quality and zero stars is poor quality.
Food quality ***
Acceptable food quality for the price. However, there should be more food variety. But sometimes, during the peak hours, we
found the food isn’t hot enough.
Price *****
Price is reasonable. The price is cheaper than we eat at other places, and
there are daily specials for $10.
Service *****
Staff are helpful and considerate; they clean up the tables very quickly.
Therefore, the service is good.
Time / Capacity **
During peak hours, the situation is quite bad. There are long queues at
both cashiers and counters. It is also hard to find a seat. As we see, there
are a lot of non-BU students having lunch in the Hall Canteen; so, BU
students have to wait to get a seat for a long time. It would be far better
if only BU students and staff could use the Hall Canteen services during
peak hours, and re-open to the public after the peak hours.
Hygiene ***
The utensils and food are generally clean. But we strongly advise the staff in the Hall Canteen to refrain from putting the
styrofoam lunch box in the microwave oven to heat up the food for take away services. The styrofoam will release some
chemicals that will cause cancer.
Environment ****
The environment is good; however, we feel the room temperature is too cold, especially in winter. We do not like to eat in a
refrigerator.
How to spend 4 hours lunch break?
Let’s meet friends in “OKUBO”!
By Charmaine Law, Karin Lee, Calvin Lee & Kong Lo
As CIE students frequently have 4-5 hours lunch break between morning and
afternoon lessons, what can you do during this long lunch break? Most of us
prefer staying in the library, watching films in the cinema or singing at a karaoke bar.
Why don’t we meet friends in an eating house? What a good idea!
We want to recommend CIE students to spend long lunch breaks in “OKUBO
Japanese Restaurant”. We can enjoy the delicious Japanese buffet, including fancy
snacks, sushi, fire pot, roast meat and sashimi. They taste great! Besides, you can have a chance to enjoy the most comfortable
Japanese style VIP room with a big LCD TV! Moreover, you can enjoy the tasty cheesecake if one of you is having a birthday
in the month that you visit! The price is very reasonable, just around $50 and you can get all the above services!
We highly recommend “OKUBO Japanese Restaurant”! Let’s meet friends in this eating house!
Staircase to Success
From Page 1
If on the contrary, you fall into a deep slumber in every lesson, your results won’t be satisfactory, and your path to a good future
will be blocked.
Apart from being energetic academically, participating in extra-curricular activities is also an essential step to success. Instead of
being a “swot” and just “gobbling” the books up, shouldn’t we find some hobbies in order to relax? The hobbies can be sports,
music, or something else. In this way, you will find your life meaningful; you will not just drudge away at your studies, but make
your life full of change and variety.
It doesn't matter whether you are a whiz kid or a dunce, it doesn't matter how well you did in
extra-curricular activities and it doesn't matter if you are already working, this step to success—being
honest, must suit you. In situations where you get involved in dishonest activities
like shoplifting or pick pocketing, you may be sent to prison. Once you are “behind bars”,
nobody can help you and your time will be wasted. Furthermore, you will blot your personal
record, and it will be extremely difficult for you to successfully obtain jobs.
The next step to success is to be a sociable person. You
have to work with your boss and other staff at work.
Imagine that you are working in a big company and you
have to meet many customers, however, you are unversed
in social etiquette and don’t even show good manners in
your dealings with customers: how would your boss and
others think of you? Furthermore, we shouldn’t be shy to ask for help if we can’t solve some
problems. We may be able to learn from others sometimes.
Last, but not least, maintaining good health is another important step to success. This can be
accomplished by having enough sleep, a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Good health is
a great asset. Without it, we could not even walk a step, and the “staircase to success” would be
totally blocked.
We have now discussed some steps to success. If you mount the stairs with care and patience,
surely you can reach the top of the staircase!
Running for Yourself
By Luk Yiu Hong, Rhodonite
“No walking, you’re almost there,” “Come on, this is the last 500m.”
If you joined the Standard Chartered Marathon on 27 February 2005 than you must have heard this. Spectators were
constantly encouraging runners to finish the race.
As everyone knows that doing exercise is good for the health, running is an excellent option. Running can also train
your mind to become stronger.
Running is not only good for your body, I believe that long distance running is a simile for life. Life is like a long
distance race, you need to keep on running to finish every checkpoint and
achieve your goal. Each distance has a different goal that needs to be
achieved, after which you need to achieve a higher-level goal. The finish
line can be compared to life's final stage. After your goals are achieved, the
feeling is very great. The reward is smaller than the amount you pay, but
the gratification can make you very happy. The feeling can’t be measured.
This is your own match, no one can replace you to achieve your goal and
finish the race. Get the “Marathon spirit, Hong Kong spirit” and live your
life; I’ll see you on the track.
