pavilion in Los Angeles saw <strong>Herrera</strong> meet Young Corbett II. 129<br />

Corbett fans were delighted by his early-round success. 130<br />

The Times wrote, “When Corbett had made several clever rushes<br />

that scintillated somewhat of his previous form and landed on the<br />

Mexican, who danced away, there were those who called “Yellow”<br />

from the tiers of humanity. Corbett <strong>com</strong>menced taunting, and a<br />

token of a popular victory noised through the air.” 131<br />

In the Fourth, Corbett sent <strong>Herrera</strong> against the ropes, “and the<br />

crowd shouted for glee. In wily fashion he [<strong>Herrera</strong>] slipped to<br />

the center of the ring with his deadly arm poised for action, but<br />

the gong sounded….” 132<br />

Spectators were struck dumb in the Fifth when <strong>Herrera</strong> KO’d<br />

Corbett. The Times’ postmortem read, “A more popular boxer<br />

perhaps never stepped into the ring, and, when he went to<br />

oblivion Friday evening, hardly a person of the great crowd at the<br />

ringside but felt sympathy for the lightweight as he lay helpless<br />
