minutes, the fight will begin.” Lucky, none of the 5,500 present<br />

knew that Nelson had already left the building. At 10:50 PM, Cook<br />

called off the fight. 167 The Times wrote, “The sickest sporting<br />

event California ever saw” had ended, and the paper charged<br />

<strong>Herrera</strong> and his manager of being “a brutal, crooked, swindling<br />

bunch that runs this game.” 168<br />

“Greaser Good For Nothing”<br />

In a “back-alley” interview early the next day the Times<br />

described <strong>Aurelio</strong> <strong>Herrera</strong> as a miserable drunk. Around<br />

midnight <strong>Herrera</strong> reportedly had “brutally knocked down and out<br />

an unknown man at First and Main streets... <strong>Herrera</strong>’s friends, to<br />

avoid possible trouble through police interference, hustled the<br />

held the forfeit checks as third party stakeholder. Hearst brought suit for<br />

nonpayment against <strong>Herrera</strong> and the First Bank of Kern. (Daily Californian, Jun 3,<br />
