Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

The sessi<strong>on</strong> entitled ‘Genetic and Ecological Interacti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir Management’ c<strong>on</strong>tained a wide variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

presentati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> observed interacti<strong>on</strong>s between<br />

aquaculture and wild stocks <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Atlantic salm<strong>on</strong> and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

diadromous fish species. Significant progress has been<br />

made since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1997 symposium in Bath, England, at<br />

which time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was some evidence, but much<br />

speculati<strong>on</strong>, about how wild and aquaculture stocks would<br />

interact in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural envir<strong>on</strong>ment. Since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bath<br />

symposium <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re has been more experience with, and<br />

study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, interacti<strong>on</strong>s between wild and aquaculture<br />

salm<strong>on</strong>. As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se interacti<strong>on</strong>s have become more<br />

prevalent, so has experience in methods for managing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se interacti<strong>on</strong>s. Presentati<strong>on</strong>s at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bergen<br />

symposium provided evidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> management<br />

experiences, highlighting both successes and failures.<br />

The Presentati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The first paper was presented by Kjetil Hindar and<br />

entitled ‘Genetic and ecological interacti<strong>on</strong>s between wild<br />

and cultured diadromous fish.’ New research since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Bath symposium was highlighted, particularly experiments<br />

in Norway and Ireland. The presentati<strong>on</strong> identified a<br />

number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> modelled effects farm fish escapees can have<br />

<strong>on</strong> wild fish. In some cases <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> eventually<br />

becomes composed entirely <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hybrids as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects are<br />

cumulative over generati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Experiences with aquaculture in Chile were presented by<br />

Alejandro Buschmann in a paper entitled ‘Interacti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

between salm<strong>on</strong> farming and marine coastal ecosystems<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> south-east Pacific.’ The full envir<strong>on</strong>mental effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

aquaculture in Chile are not known. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

diversity in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benthic envir<strong>on</strong>ment has been<br />

documented to have been reduced in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vicinity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

aquaculture cages. The abundance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> predators was also<br />

observed to be higher in areas with aquaculture<br />

installati<strong>on</strong>s. It was str<strong>on</strong>gly recommended that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects<br />

<strong>on</strong> native fish needed to be studied.<br />

A presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetic research within<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aquaculture industry was presented by Arne Storset,<br />

entitled ‘Past, present, and future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetic improvement<br />

in salm<strong>on</strong> farming.’ Individual and family selecti<strong>on</strong> methods<br />

were reviewed. Molecular methods <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> selecti<strong>on</strong> were<br />

identified as likely to increase in importance in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future.<br />

It was emphasized that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> goal within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Norwegian<br />

aquaculture industry was domesticati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Aina Valland’s presentati<strong>on</strong>, ‘The causes and scale <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

escapes from salm<strong>on</strong> farming,’ identified <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following<br />

causes: technical failure, predators, floating objects and<br />

boat propellers. The relative c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

causes was found to vary significantly from year to year.<br />

The importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> internal c<strong>on</strong>trol systems and educati<strong>on</strong><br />

and training to ensure staff competence were emphasized.<br />

‘The escape <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> juvenile salm<strong>on</strong> from hatcheries into<br />

freshwater streams in New Brunswick,’ presented by<br />

J<strong>on</strong>athan Carr, illustrated that escapes from freshwater<br />

hatcheries can be a significant cause for c<strong>on</strong>cern. Escaped<br />

fish were recorded at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hatcheries located<br />

near freshwater streams. A call was made for<br />

implementati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tainment strategies for freshwater<br />

hatcheries.<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> behavior <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escaped salm<strong>on</strong> was<br />

presented by Fred Whoriskey in a paper entitled ‘S<strong>on</strong>ic<br />

tracking <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> experimentally released farmed Atlantic salm<strong>on</strong><br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cobscook Bay regi<strong>on</strong>, Maine.’ Escapes were<br />

simulated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winter and spring. Escapees were found<br />

to disperse rapidly bey<strong>on</strong>d 1km from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />

release. Many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> escapees were eliminated quickly in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spring, possibly attributable to predati<strong>on</strong> by seals.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> behavior <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escaped farmed<br />

salm<strong>on</strong> was presented by Lars Petter Hansen in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

presentati<strong>on</strong> ‘Migrati<strong>on</strong> and survival <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmed Atlantic<br />

salm<strong>on</strong> released from two Norwegian fish farms.’ The<br />

escaped fish did not appear to home to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir release site.<br />

The survival and distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escapees depended <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> year <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> escape and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> release site. Much<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> could be explained by currents.<br />

Peder Fiske’s presentati<strong>on</strong>, ‘The incidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escaped<br />

farmed salm<strong>on</strong> in relati<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish farming<br />

activity,’ found a positive correlati<strong>on</strong> between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intensity<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish farming and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> incidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escapes. This study<br />

suggests that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> salm<strong>on</strong> in net pens is a better<br />

indicator <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> farm escapees in rivers than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

reported escapees.<br />

Alan Walker described <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> programmes<br />

to quantify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spatial and temporal distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>
