2 managing director’s report With Expertise and Passion for a Juster World Esther Maurer Managing Director Solidar Suisse Solidar Suisse used to be known as Swiss Labour Assistance SLA, founded in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Having enjoyed a reputation of high competence and professionalism, we remain deeply committed to our humanitarian tradition. One of our three focal areas, therefore, is Humanitarian Aid, delivered impartially and in line with strict international guidelines. Solidar also engages in Development Cooperation with two thematic core areas, aiming at enhancing social justice: Participation & Democracy and Decent Work, in line with ILO-policies. Solidar Suisse is currently running programmes with these focal themes in twelve countries around the globe. managing director’s Report 3 Flood victims in Pakistan – internally displaced people in Sri Lanka Solidar Suisse has been present in Pakistan since the great flood of 2010. Until 2012, we have built nearly one thousand homes with private bath-rooms. The new homes destined for the poorest families among a povertystricken population are well built, and well suited to the local culture and environment. Moreover, Solidar has enhanced the sustainability of its livelihood projects by empowering participants to pass on their new skills to other members of their communities. In Sri Lanka Solidar Suisse continues – and has expanded – its rehabilitation and reconstruction programme launched in 2010, aimed at northern populations displaced internally as a consequence of the civil war. In 2012 over 1,600 returning families received livelihood grants to rebuild their lives and provide access to drinking water, food, housing, income and security. The strength of the programme lies in its integrative approach and cooperation with various governmental and non-governmental agencies. Our humanitarian engagements in Pakistan and Sri Lanka are being co-funded by Swiss Solidarity, the Swiss government agency for Development and Cooperation, SDC, and the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid, ECHO. These sustainable, forward-looking projects constitute a solid foundation for future development cooperation, from emergency relief, through reconstruction, to Solidar Suisse’s thematic core areas of activity. Decent work shall enable everyone to live autonomous lives in dignity. Alongside humanitarian aid in these two countries, Solidar Suisse is gradually establishing projects to provide decent work. Syrian refugees in Lebanon The crisis in Syria, the distress of people fleeing the country and the terrible conditions in which refugees have been living in neighbouring countries compelled Solidar Suisse in early autumn 2012 to provide support to Syrian refugees in Lebanon. As Solidar Suisse had no pre-existing structures in the country, we launched a joint project with NPA, our Norwegian partner in the European Solidar network. More than a thousand refugee families received aid packages containing food and articles of personal hygiene. We also supplied heating stoves and fuel to 1,200 families in the Bekaa Valley to enable them to survive the harsh winter conditions. Disastrous drought in Burkina Faso For the past thirty-seven years, Solidar Suisse has been active in Burkina Faso. When severe drought led to crop failures in early 2012, we did not hesitate to expand our efforts to tackle the food insecurity situation. Generous donations from our members and other donors have enabled us to provide daily lunches to school children. Our long-standing engagement in Burkina Faso also compels us to closely monitor developments in Mali because Malian refugees are currently placing a significant burden on the Burkinese state budget.
