Advancement & Achievement
the merits of scouting
A young person joins Scouting to have fun.
The Scouting program provides them an
opportunity for personal growth through the
use of the advancement program. This program
teaches a young person how to set goals and
work to achieve those goals. Scouts gain selfesteem
and self-confidence as they set goals,
achieve them, and are recognized through the
rank advancement program. Advancement is
one tool by which Scouting achieves its aims, to
develop young people of good character who
are physically strong, mentally fit and trained for
good citizenship. In 2010, Cub Scouts earned
4,859 Rank Advancements and Boy Scouts
earned 1,653 Rank Advancements including 184
Eagle Scouts. 8,970 Merit Badges were earned
by Boy Scouts.
