Experience the Arts
On February 9, 2013, the Fine Arts Department will host
“Experience the Arts – What Dreams May Come.”
Our goal is to raise $50,000 towards items that will
enhance the learning and performance abilities of all the
Fine Arts students at Faith Lutheran. Some of the items
funded by previous years’ fundraisers proceeds include a
major projection and sound system upgrade, play royalties,
computers specialized for music programs, musical
instruments, and cameras.
One fundraising portion of “Experience the Arts” is
a silent auction. We need you to help solicit donated
items to be auctioned. Examples of items we’re seeking
include spa services, movies tickets, show tickets, hotel
stays, restaurants, gift baskets, fitness classes, artwork,
electronics, private sports lessons, jewelry, etc. Donated
items can be solicited from businesses that you frequent,
neighbors, friends—anyone you think would be supportive
of our cause. Any donations that you collect may be given
to any Fine Arts teachers or dropped off in the front office
at school.

Tuition is due by the first of the month and becomes late
on the 10th of the month. Late payments are assessed a
monthly charge of 1.5% of any outstanding balance plus
a $25 late fee each month.

As we come off the busiest shopping
season for most folks and
retailers, I’m excited to announce
that this spring we will begin construction
on our very own school
store. Called “The Shield,” it will
be located just to the north of the
short game golf practice facility;
its entrance will face the west parking
lot with convenient parking for
shoppers. An artist’s rendering is
shown below. If everything goes as
planned, we hope to open our store
by August 1, 2013.
The plan for the store provides
for over 1,000 square feet of retail
floor space and a dressing room,
with storage in the back of the building
at over 400 square
feet (total construction
footprint is 1,630 square
feet). The building will be
constructed of split-face
block. It will look as if
it has always been part
of the campus. Additionally,
we will add 412
square feet of storage on
the northwest corner of
the Student Center.
While inventory will be
chosen by the store manager,
we expect to sell our school
uniforms, PE uniforms, spirit wear,
and logoed merchandise such as
backpacks, key chains, lanyards,
pennants, water bottles, laptop
covers, pens and pencils, erasers,
bumper stickers, magnets,
book markers, planners, bracelets,
lapel pins, sport bags, rally
sticks, beanies, etc. Those possibilities
are endless as we continue
to get our brand out into the valley
and beyond. Anyone interested in
applying for the store manager job
should contact Gary Daning (DaningG@flhsemail.org)

January 15, 2013. We will also be
looking for volunteers and those
with service hour requirements for
tuition assistance to help work in
the store.
Our long standing contract with
Campus Club expires this spring.
I deeply appreciate the great relationship
we have enjoyed with Nina
and her team there and also appreciate
Campus Club’s willingness
to help as we move through this
transition. Our contract with Dennis
Uniforms does not expire until
2014; we will make a decision later
this spring on how we proceed with
Dennis. A special thanks to the
Lujan family who has capably and
diligently operated the Faith Family
store the past few years providing
much appreciated Faith Lutheran
Crusader items for us all.

great Crusader shopping experience
for our families, faculty/staff,
alumni, and constituents for many

2013/2014 REGISTRATION: 2013/2014 New and returning
student registration is now in progress! Registration is
available online this year at Faithlutheranlv.org by clicking
on the “Apply or Re-enroll online now” button. Registration
and payment must be received by January 31st for
all returning students to be guaranteed placement.
Please be sure to choose your preferred billing option
(one, two or 10 months) for the 2013/2014 school
year on the registration documents. The 12-month billing
option will no longer be available after the current
school year.
2013/2014 TUITION ASSISTANCE: Application for
2013/2014 Tuition Assistance will be available online
beginning January 1, 2013. Applications must be submitted
by April 1, 2013 to be included in the initial
distribution. Applications received after April 1st are subject
to funds available.

ALUMNI CORNER
Brett Lubbe, class of 2011, was a valuable part of the football and basketball
programs at Faith Lutheran. He holds the record as the all-time leading scorer in
the basketball program and is 4th on the all-time receiving yards list. He currently
attends Wisconsin Lutheran College and is a member of the Men’s Basketball
Team where he was recently named player of the week.
From a recent press release: Wisconsin Lutheran College sophomore forward
Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds
per game as the Warriors went 1-1 last week. Lubbe recorded his first career double-double
by posting career highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday in a
72-67 loss at Rockford. He followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds
in a 90-88 overtime win over Concordia Chicago Saturday. For the week, Lubbe
shot 65 percent (13-for-20) from the floor and a perfect 100 percent (4-for-4) from
the free-throw line.

Middle School Robotics
On December 1st, our
Middle School Robotics students
took part in the local
First Lego League Championship
which was held at
Cimarron Memorial High
School. They have spent
most of the school year up
to this point preparing for
the competition in class.
We had two teams finish in
the top 10 in the robotics
Middle School Robotics Team at work
Zack Phillips (7th grade) and
Bailey Capuano (8th grade)
section of the competition. There were a total of 48 teams at
the competitions. Congratulations to the robotics students.
Test Interpretation Evenings
Please join us on the evenings of January 14, 15 and 16,
2013 as we host test score interpretations for the PSAT, PLAN
and EXPLORE in the CPAC at 7:00 p.m. The evening of the 14th
will be for juniors and their parents, the 15th for sophomores
and parents, and the 16th for freshmen and parents. These
meetings will also include information on graduation requirements,
SAT/ACT preparation options, college readiness and
the university selection process, and the available financial aid
options to help offset the cost of college. Direct any questions

Grad Nite Live/Crusader Christmas Boutique
The 2013 Grad Nite Live/Crusader
Christmas Boutique team
would like to thank all the parents,
families and friends who helped
make our Crusader Christmas Boutique
on December 1st the best ever.
This is the Grad Nite Live’s largest
fundraiser and preliminary numbers
indicate it was our best year yet! We
had over 500 people visit the boutique,
which was held in our Faith
Student Center. We had 50 vendors
selling their products and services
and who donated wonderful raffle
items to make this one of our best
raffle fundraisers as well. In addition,
our Crusader Christmas Bake
sale and café doubled their sales
this year! We could not have done
this without the very generous donations
of bake goods by the many
parents and teachers at Faith. The
bake sale team – Amanda Flangas,
Kim Hansen and Michele Johnston –
would also like to thank Khoury’s
Mediterranean Restaurant, Rocco’s
Pizza and Raina Gaddis with Rainy
Cakes for their donations and support.
We are truly blessed to have
the support of the Faith Lutheran
community!
So, the stage is set for another
great Grad Nite Live party for the
graduating class of 2013. We will
start those plans in January. Again,
thank you for all your support.

Faith is rolling out a STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math)
program next year beginning with the
graduating class of 2015. This leading
program will prepare students for STEM
majors at the finest universities in the
country. Faith Lutheran has the opportunity
to partner with UNLV, NV Energy,
and local engineering firms and medical
facilities to provide our students with
STEM experiences and research that will
both ignite passion and prepare them for
rigorous majors in the STEM fields.
Pre-STEM courses will be available
to middle school students in the areas
of earth science, physical science, and
robotics beginning next year. Current
high school course offerings in math and
science will be supplemented by new
STEM course offerings in the engineering
and biomedical fields. These collaborative
experiences will be combined with
research or internship opportunities to
form the basis of preparing our students
to enter these fields. The STEM program
will also include field trips, guest speakers,
and study groups.
Faith Lutheran High School will be
offering a STEM Endorsement that will
be added to a student’s transcript upon
completion. This STEM endorsement will
announce to universities that the student
has accomplished a well-rounded,
rigorous program in the math and science
departments. Additionally, this
STEM endorsement will indicate that
the student has become proficient in a
collaborative scientific environment and
has accomplished significant research
in science, technology, engineering or
math fields.

CRUSADER COACHES
BEST IN THE STATE!
This fall’s sports has been one of the best in recent memory at
Faith Lutheran. Every sport, boys and girls, made the playoffs and
five sports made a run at a state title. Of those sports, Faith earned a
state championship and two runner-up finishes. On the heels of their
team’s successes are coaches who work tirelessly behind the scenes
to improve their program. Faith coaches have been blessed with honors
just as their teams have been, but those coaches are reluctant
to take the credit as most of them would say the athletes do the
hard work to get there. Athletic administrator Bret Walter says, “Our
coaches will all tell you that our athletes make them look good. While
that’s true, we also have coaches at Faith who genuinely care about
kids first. These coaches are dedicated to their sport and continually
look for ways to improve professionally to give our student-athletes
the best chance to be successful.”
Mark Cheney, girls’ golf coach, received Southern Region Coach
of the Year. He led his team to a league championship, regional
championship and a state championship in the Division 1A. Jeff
Edwards, girls’ cross country coach, received regional coach of the
year honors as he led his team to compete at state. Steve Morrill,
girls’ soccer coach, received league, region and state coach of the
year honors while leading his team to a regional championship and
a Division 1A state runner-up finish. Amy Fisher, volleyball coach,
received region and state coach of the year honors as her team took
league and regional championships and placed third at the state
championships. We at Faith Lutheran are proud of all of our coaches
as each and every one of them put in endless hours to make their
sport the best in the state.
Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity Boys Basketball Team is 3 - 7 after their first ten
games. The team opened up the season with wins against Virgin
Valley (44 - 33) and Cimarron Memorial (80 - 73), and then lost at
Bishop Gorman (64 - 24). In the Tip Off Classic at Legacy December
6 - 8, the boys went 1 - 3, opening up with a win against St. Aloysius
College from Australia (67 - 32). That was followed by losses to
Legacy (63 - 69), Brea CA (57 - 62), and Durango (69 - 77).
On December 12, the team lead at halftime at Arbor View 27 - 25.
The Aggies scored 27 points in the third quarter and went on to win
64 - 48. D’Khari Hicks scored 14 points and John Molchon added
8. The following night the Crusaders dropped a game to Division
1A opponent, Boulder City, 39 - 43, after leading by six at halftime.
Michael Holthus lead the team in scoring with 9 points. On Saturday,
December 15, the team traveled to Southern California to play host
Orange Lutheran. Orange lead by seven at halftime and went on to
win 59 - 41. Sam Stevens and Stuart Engs each added 10 points for
the Crusaders.
Seniors on the team include, Stuart Engs, D’Khari Hicks, Brendan
Meyer, Austin Ortwein, and Sam Stevens. The team has been
lead in scoring by D’Khari Hicks (11 ppg), Sam Stevens (9.5 ppg),
and John Molchon (9 ppg).

Girls Golfers Sign
Division 1 Scholarships
Along with her proud Mom, Dad and sister Julia, Brianna Becker
signs her letter of intent to play at the University of Hawaii.

signs her letter of intent to play at Santa Clara University
Capping their stellar careers at Faith
Lutheran, golfers Annie Freman and
Brianna Becker signed National Letters
of Intent on November 14th. Freman
will be playing for the Santa Clara
University Broncos next season, and
Becker will be playing for the University
of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine.
Since her first match as a freshman,
Annie Freman has held the number one
spot on the roster. She holds virtually
every individual golf record at Faith,
including low 18 hole score (66), season
average (72.0), and career medalist
finishes (25). She has been a first team
all-league and all-region honoree four
years running, and has been recognized
as region player of the year three times.
She was the state runner-up her junior
and senior years. In addition to her
impressive high school performances,
she won an AJGA tournament and finished
9th at the U.S. Girls Amateur
Championship. She was recently recognized
as a Rolex Junior All-American.
Brianna Becker completed an outstanding
career by winning the 2012
Nevada state championship, highlighted
by a career low 68 on the first
day of the tournament. She holds the
9 hole low score record (34) and is a
three-time region tournament champion.
She was a first team all-league
and all-region honoree four years in a
row, and has been recognized as region
player of the year twice.
Varsity Girls’ Basketball
The varsity girls’ basketball team is beefing up its schedule
and looking towards a post season run. The girls finished
2-4 in pre-season play, competing against some of the best
competition in the state. They traveled up north to Reno
again this year and played three very good teams including
Spring Creek, the reigning 3A state champs. The Crusaders
beat Spring Creek 49-44 in a great team effort with major
scoring points coming from Dani Tharaldson (10), Sam
Leonard (9), Taylor Hammer (8), and Julia Benko (8).
The Crusaders have been led in scoring this year by
seniors Benko (9.1 points per game) and Hammer (9.6
points per game). Hammer has also been pounding the
boards pulling out two double-doubles this year already.
The girls are excited about the season and look to improve
each game. League games began December 18th. Come on
out and support the Crusaders.
The JV girls basketball team is off and running in an
impressive fashion. The girls are undefeated this year
including beating Bishop Gorman 43-20. They headed into
the break ready to compete in the Triple Threat Christmas
Tournament.
