Manuel Tienda León has grown constantly ever since 1927 to become the
hallmark of excellence in the bus and chauffer-driven car rental sector, a
track record that projects well into the future.
Situation
The company has a modern fleet with comfortable buses and cars and an experienced
staff, which ensures a quality service.
Manuel Tienda León was the first transport company to be TÜV CERT certified under European
ISO 9002 quality standards by the German accreditation company TGA DAR.
Issue Discussion
Manuel Tienda León had a company website that worked as an electronic catalog that, although
describing the services provided by the company, did not enable user interaction.
As it has always been a company at the forefront of innovation and quality of service, Manuel
Tienda León interpreted its customers’ needs and decided that its website should be converted
into a new sales channel for its services.
After evaluating a number of proposals, it chose the one submitted by Ingemática S.A, a
Microsoft Certified Solution Provider, as it was the most suitable and convincing with regard to
technology, implementation times, scalability and overall cost. The company chose 451Group, a
systems developer, to redesign the look & feel of the website.
Solution
The macro-project gave the customer priority by developing during the first stage a
system with the facility to provide the company with a new sales channel for its services.
This module was used to integrate the management task of the country’s internal and external
bases over the Internet, and a special system was setup so that those organizations that have an
account with Manuel Tienda León may have the option to self-manage the staff that is authorized
to use its services, and to be able to display the number of journeys made and scheduled for the
future.
Solution
Benefits
Not only is the company now
able to sell its services over the
Internet, it can also manage its
fleet more efficiently by knowing
in advance the number of
services that it will need to
provide per day and per time
zone. It also allows the company
to lessen the workload at
traditional sale points (particularly
at peak times), as a large number
of arriving passengers have
already been attended to by the
time their flights arrive.
System Architecture
The structure implemented comprises two redundant servers (Compaq Proliant ML370) installed
at the company’s head office. Microsoft Windows 2000 was installed on these servers, in which
the application is run. One acts as the web server and the other, in which Microsoft SQL Server
2000 was installed, is the database server. In turn, the head office is connected to three other
servers (Compaq Proliant ML330) installed at the company’s three main bases: Ezeiza,
Aeroparque and Terminal Bs. As. over 128 Kbytes/second point-to-point links (Impsat).
The company’s other bases, located at a number of airports throughout the country and abroad,
have access to the Manuel Tienda de León website where, by entering a user name and
password, they may dump the data generated at each location in the same consolidated
database.
Implementation
The first stage of the project comprised setting up a website with B2C (Business to Consumer)
and B2B (Business to Business) e-commerce facilities. However, this was just the first step in a
number of activities that would integrate all Manuel Tienda León’s systems into a single SQL
Server database, so that the company may obtain on-line information from each sector.
This stage was completed in just 90 days, after which the solution was implemented and website
staff was trained.
"Manuel Tienda León is once
again at the forefront of the
country’s transport sector,
this time working together
with Microsoft. Our B2C and
B2B site enables us to speed
up customer transactions
and improve integration with
suppliers, franchises and
representatives throughout
the country”.
Call center reservation staff is currently using the solution to enter any reservations or purchases
made over the telephone onto the system.
Regional franchises, on the other hand, issue and receive reservations over the solution
implemented, and pre-sale staff of the point of origin use the solution so that a customer who has
contracted a service at the airport of departure will find a member of the company waiting for
him/her when he/she arrives at his/her destination.
The solution has a facility to permanently track all services purchased on the website with several
modes that range from “initial” to “critical,” and to send warning messages to the mobile
telephone and/or pager of the supervisors at each base.
Benefits
time working together with Microsoft. Our B2C and B2B site enables us to speed up
customer transactions and improve integration with suppliers, franchises and
Tienda León.
