She…sat back from the conversation more th<strong>an</strong> I thought that she would…my recollection is of a very<br />

sort of underst<strong>an</strong>ding soft kind of person, but businesslike.’ This <strong>approach</strong>, which was more facilitative<br />

<strong>an</strong>d less directive th<strong>an</strong> Linda had <strong>an</strong>ticipated, helped her <strong>to</strong> ‘open up more th<strong>an</strong> I expected’.<br />

The outcome: The outcome of the mediation was <strong>an</strong> agreement on particular ways that they would<br />

deal with each other in the future. A brief note sent <strong>to</strong> them by the media<strong>to</strong>r was the only record of<br />

what was agreed. Linda said that as a result of the mediation the working relationship had greatly<br />

improved <strong>an</strong>d there was a lot more trust <strong>an</strong>d underst<strong>an</strong>ding between the colleagues: ‘we realised that<br />

we did not need <strong>to</strong> be close friends <strong>to</strong> work <strong>to</strong>gether effectively’. Following the mediation Je<strong>an</strong> was<br />

more ‘aware of aspects of Linda’s communication style as a m<strong>an</strong>ager <strong>an</strong>d had a better underst<strong>an</strong>ding<br />

of her role’. Linda herself was also ‘much more attuned as <strong>to</strong> what I do that c<strong>an</strong> upset her’. (mediumsized<br />
