WORLD INCARCERATION RATES

Mass imprisonment<br />

is not <strong>in</strong> response to<br />

violent crime.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>crease is<br />

attributed to <strong>the</strong> War<br />

on Drugs, mandatory<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum and three<br />

strikes sentenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and harsh juvenile<br />

justice policies

While African Americans and<br />

The Post-Racial Myth, “White”,<br />

Male Spaces, and “<strong>Color</strong>-Bl<strong>in</strong>d”<br />

Racism

This noise is about race. It is about<br />

"o<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g" a President who is seen as a<br />

symbol <strong>of</strong> white dispossession: dispossession<br />

<strong>of</strong> white hegemony, white entitlement, white<br />

expectation, and white power, unquestioned<br />

and unchallenged from <strong>the</strong> darker sk<strong>in</strong>ned<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. This is what animates <strong>the</strong> every move <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

angry masses, <strong>in</strong>dividual exceptions<br />

notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Unless <strong>the</strong> left beg<strong>in</strong>s push<strong>in</strong>g back, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g that yes, <strong>the</strong> old days are gone,<br />

white hegemony is dead, and deserved its<br />

demise, and that we will all be better <strong>of</strong>f for<br />

it, <strong>the</strong> chorus <strong>of</strong> white backlash will only<br />

grow louder. So too will it grow more<br />

effective at divid<strong>in</strong>g and conquer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g people who would benefit–all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m–from a new direction.<br />

Demographics: Daily Kos Demographics:<br />

Still White. Over 50. Well Off. Male.

Climate: Dream Deferred:<br />

Racism <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “<strong>Color</strong>-bl<strong>in</strong>d” K<strong>in</strong>d.

Racism, as both white supremacist ideology and <strong>in</strong>stitutionalized<br />

arrangement, rema<strong>in</strong>s merely transformed with its' systemic foundations<br />

<strong>in</strong>tact. Segregation <strong>in</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g and education persists at levels beyond that<br />

noted <strong>in</strong> 1954 <strong>in</strong> Brown, racial wealth gaps grow, and racial disparities <strong>in</strong><br />

crim<strong>in</strong>al justice proliferate at a pace that has led to <strong>the</strong> label "The New Jim<br />

Crow“……<br />

This denial <strong>of</strong> The Dream is doubly bitter, for not only does systemic racism<br />

persist <strong>in</strong>deed with ever widen<strong>in</strong>g racial gaps, but K<strong>in</strong>g's own words have<br />

been subverted to construct <strong>the</strong> denial. "They will not be judged by <strong>the</strong> color<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sk<strong>in</strong> but by <strong>the</strong> content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir character," is not yet reality but<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead now <strong>the</strong> rally<strong>in</strong>g cry for those who would deny <strong>the</strong> persistence <strong>of</strong><br />

racism <strong>in</strong> any and all <strong>of</strong> its' manifestations. These words have been<br />

expropriated to legitimate <strong>the</strong> newest racist paradigm - "color-bl<strong>in</strong>dness".<br />

<strong>Color</strong>-bl<strong>in</strong>d racism" expla<strong>in</strong>s contemporary racial <strong>in</strong>equality as <strong>the</strong> outcome<br />

<strong>of</strong> nonracial dynamics and allows whites to equate racism with prejudice,<br />

ignor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutionalized and systemic racial structures that susta<strong>in</strong> and<br />

reproduce white racial privilege.

Resist<strong>in</strong>g White Supremacy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Blogosphere</strong><br />

Recognize racism as systemic<br />

and structured – as bigger than<br />

mere prejudice and bigotry.<br />

See <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tersections but do not<br />

reduce race to class.<br />

Recognize that racist impact<br />

does occur <strong>in</strong> lieu <strong>of</strong> racist<br />

<strong>in</strong>tent.<br />

Listen…Read more – Type less..<br />

Resist not only <strong>the</strong> easy obvious<br />

active, overt racism but <strong>the</strong><br />

coded covert racism as well.

Resist <strong>the</strong> rhetoric <strong>of</strong> “color-bl<strong>in</strong>d” racism. Learn <strong>the</strong><br />

code words and <strong>the</strong> dog whistles..

Become Race Traitors..<br />

Whiteness is not a culture….. Whiteness has noth<strong>in</strong>g to do with<br />

culture and everyth<strong>in</strong>g to do with social position. It is noth<strong>in</strong>g but a<br />

reflection <strong>of</strong> privilege, and exists for no reason o<strong>the</strong>r than to defend it.<br />

The white race is a club. Certa<strong>in</strong> people are enrolled <strong>in</strong> it at birth, without<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir consent, and brought up accord<strong>in</strong>g to its rules. For <strong>the</strong> most part<br />

<strong>the</strong>y go through life accept<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> privileges <strong>of</strong> membership, without<br />

reflect<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> costs. O<strong>the</strong>rs, usually new arrivals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, pass<br />

through a probationary period before “earn<strong>in</strong>g” membership; <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

necessarily more conscious <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir racial stand<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The white club does not require that all members be strong advocates <strong>of</strong><br />

white supremacy, merely that <strong>the</strong>y defer to <strong>the</strong> prejudices <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. It is<br />

based on one huge assumption: that all those who look white are,<br />

whatever <strong>the</strong>ir reservations, fundamentally loyal to it.<br />
