Uses of Subordinate Clauses
Lesson 2
Like phrases, a subordinate clause can be used in several different ways.
20 B A subordinate clause can be used as an adverb or an adjective.
Adverbial Clauses
A subordinate clause can be used the same way as a single adverb or an adverbial phrase.
When a clause functions as an adverb, it is called an adverbial clause.
Chapter 20
Single Adverb
Adverbial Phrase
Adverbial Clause
Let’s meet here.
Let’s meet at the Adler Planeterium.
Let’s meet where the solar car is being displayed.
20 B.1 An adverbial clause is a subordinate clause that is used mainly to modify a verb.
An adverbial clause answers the adverb question How? When? Where? Under what
conditions? or Why?
How?
When?
Where?
Under What
Conditions?
Why?
The museum guide described the solar system as if he had
visited each planet.
We were shocked when he told us people used to think the
earth was the center of the solar system.
Wherever we turned, we saw fascinating exhibits.
If you want to see something amazing, take the 3-D tour of
the Milky Way.
We couldn’t tour the space laboratory because it was closed.
Subordinating Conjunctions
An adverbial clause begins with a subordinating conjunction. A few of the
subordinating conjunctions listed on the next page—such as after, as, before, and
until—can also be used as prepositions. These words serve as subordinating conjunctions
only when they are followed by a group of words with a subject and a verb.
