Some examples: 4Three MSU professors have been named 2006 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows: Shelagh Ferguson-Miller, University Distinguished Professor and chair of biochemistry and molecular biology; Kenneth Keegstra, University Distinguished Professor in biochemistry and molecular biology; and Robert Pennock, professor in the Lyman Briggs School of Science. 4Hiram Fitzgerald, University Distinguished Professor of psychology and associate provost for outreach and engagement, has won Zero To Three’s 2006 Dolley Madison Award for Outstanding Lifelong Contribution to the development and well-being of very young children and their families. 4Guofang Li, associate professor of second language and literacy education, was awarded the Edward Fry Book Award for her book, Culturally Contested Pedagogy. 4Shanti A. Zaid, ’06, a member of MSU’s Honors College and history major, has been awarded a 2007 Marshall scholarship, which covers all costs for two years of study in the United Kingdom. He is one of 40 scholarship winners in the U.S. 4The State News, MSU’s student-run campus daily, has won its 15th Pacemaker Award— dubbed “the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism”—at the National College Media Convention last fall. NEW HIRES ON CAMPUS 4James Pivarnik, professor of kinesiology and epidemiology and director of the Center for Physical Activity and Health, has been named University Intellectual Integrity Officer. He succeeds Loran Bieber, who is retiring from MSU. 4Cliff F. Thompson, dean emeritus of the University of Wisconsin Law School, has been named acting dean of the MSU College of Law. MSU College of Law Dean Terence Blackburn is on leave currently serving as a legal reform specialist in Jordan for the American Bar Association Middle East Programs. HIGH RANKS FOR MSU RESEARCH Two MSU departments, accounting and philosophy, topped the rankings for published scholarly activity of its faculty. The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, which ranks faculty for the number of publications and citations in scholarly journals, as well as funding, has those two departments higher than their counterparts at 353 other research universities. “It’s really nice that we are being recognized,” says Kathy Petroni, acting chairperson of the Accounting and Information Systems Dept. Adds Richard Peterson, philosophy chairperson, “Our department has got a number of very active and talented faculty.” UPCOMING ACTIVITIES OF YOUR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION By Bill Beekman,’89, Acting Executive Director As I write this column in mid-January, winter has finally descended on us here in mid-Michigan. The warmth of our extended fall has passed, winter coats are out, and the wind chill is down in the single digits. Personally, I’m ready for spring. But the cold weather isn’t slowing us down here at your alumni association. On Friday, January 12, Sparty was crowned the national champion mascot by the Universal Cheer Association. Sparty has received this honor three of the last four years; an incredible feat. You may not know that Sparty is the responsibility of the Student Alumni Foundation, a unit of the alumni association. SAF, as we call it within the alumni association, is featured on page 20 of this issue of the magazine. Our great team at SAF runs the best mascot program in the country and the Izzone and Corner Blitz are now models for how others across the country establish student cheering sections. We are working hard to communicate more effectively with your club and on-campus alumni leaders. We conducted an alumni leadership conference in East Lansing in November and will be on the road with a conference in Las Vegas in late January and Charlotte, North Carolina in early February. We’re also gearing up for a strong schedule of spring activities. Kaleidoscope, a day for women, will take place on April 27, featuring singer and author Naomi Judd. Then we welcome back graduates of fifty years or more to the annual Kedzie reunion on June 8. We’re also excited to participate in Grandparents University, featured in the last issue of this magazine (pp. 28-31, Fall 2006), on June 27-29. There’s also a lot going on behind the scenes. Your alumni board of directors is busy working on a new strategic planning process to lead us into the future. They are also working on a new governance model that will increase the number of people that participate in the governance of your alumni association. Here in the office we’re in the process of rethinking how we do business, exploring operational efficiencies, and working hard to improve quality and consistency in everything we do. In the coming months we hope you’ll notice a new campaign designed to increase awareness of the MSU Alumni Association and all we have to offer. There is a lot going on and we want you and your more than 400,000 alumni colleagues to know about it! Finally, if there is anything that we here at the alumni association can do for you, please don’t hesitate to email, call, write, or stop in. We’d love to hear from you.
