ALMA MATTERS Calhoun County REGIONAL CLUBS BOSTON, MA—Nov. 16: About 50 area Spartans gathered at the Boston Hyatt Regency to kickoff a local scholarship drive. President Michael Kratochwill welcomed special MSU guests Ron Fisher, dean of Honors College, and development officer Barbara Ball- McClure. CALHOUN COUNTY—Sep. 25: Sparty and more than 100 area Spartans (photo) attended the annual Golf Outing & Scholarship Dinner at the Battle Creek Country Club. More than $8,000, the most ever in the club’s history, was raised for club student scholarships and for MSU athletics. Special guests included former MSU football coach and trustee George Perles, and MSUAA assistant directors Dave Brown and Robert Bao. CENTRAL OHIO—Sep. 23: Nearly 40 area Spartans gathered at Fitzgerald’s in Columbus to watch the MSU-Notre Dame game. COASTAL GEORGIA—Oct. 7: More than 40 area Spartans and Wolverines gathered to watch the football game at the Grand Lake Lodge & Spa, Savannah, GA. The MSU club (see photo), which hosted the event, was able to raise $120. Dec. 10: More than two dozen area alumni gathered in the home of Bob and Carol Nickels in Savannah for a Holiday Open House. About $300 was raised for the club’s scholarship fund. Nov. 29: More than 100 area Spartans attended a Mavs- Raptors pre-game reception at American Airlines Center. SEATTLE, WA—Dec. 9: More than a dozen area Spartans gathered at Jillian’s Bar and Grill, Seattle, to watch the men’s basketball team play BYU. CONTITUENT ASSOCIATIONS AGRICULTURE & NATURAL RESOURCES—Nov. 11: More than 900 Spartans and friends attended the 31st AutumnFest at the MSU Pavilion, including special MSU guests trustee Don Nugent, president Lou Anna K. Simon, provost Kim Wilcox, dean Jeff Armstrong (right, in photo), and MSUAA board chairperson Stella Cash. The event raised more than $13,500 for scholarships. Since 1989, the event has raised more than $175,000. Nov. 16-19: Altogether some 250 or so Spartans took part in a road trip to Penn State, where the PSU College of Agricultural Sciences hosted the MSU group. $1,350 was raised for scholarships. EDUCATION—Oct. 27: More than 270 Spartans and friends gathered to pay tribute to this year’s 29 Crystal Apple recipients at the Kellogg Center. Speakers included dean Carole Ames and award recipient Brian Hawkins, president of Colorado-based EDUCAUSE. The award winners were selected by members of the COE Leadership Circle, who support the College of Education with gifts of $1,250 or more. HOSPITALITY BUSINESS— Nov. 7: More than 700 students attended Career Expo XXVIII at Kellogg Center, featuring 150 recruiters from 70 leading companies in the nation’s largest career fair for hospitality students. The event was organized by a board of directors (see photo). Nov. 11: Nearly 300 students and alumni attended the Wall of Fame induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. William P. Weidner, ’67, MBA ’68, president and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., was named Industry Leader of the Year.
