FUN, FLOATS AND THE FROG
You did a great job capturing
the excitement of this year’s
Homecoming with “The Fun,
The Floats, and The Frog” (cover
story, Fall 2006). I applaud not
only your coverage of Kermit
and the Homecoming events,
but also your coverage of MSU
alumni from around the world
and what is happening right
here on campus.
Everyone should be very proud
to be GREEN. I know I am.
As Kermit said, “At MSU, it’s
not only easy to be green. It’s
essential.” Acting executive
director Bill Beekman deserves
special praise for going to the
“swamp” and persevering to land
Kermit as the Grand Marshal,
guest speaker, assistant football
coach, and President Simon’s
comedy sidekick. This was a big
one, and it deserves an A+.
GRANDPARENTS U
It was a privilege for me to have
participated in Grandparents
University last summer at
MSU with my nine year old
grandson, Parker. In addition to
providing me an opportunity to
spend some quality time with
him, the hands-on, interactive
program was educational,
practical and exciting for both
of us. The classes brought out
a new behavior in Parker that
I had not witnessed before.
He behaved less reserved and
more proactive in the class
sessions. He even volunteered
to interview his grandfather in
one of the classes, sharing family
traditions, in front of the class.
We became better informed
about growing plants, the food
we eat and learned a lot about
stars and galaxies in the Abrams
Planetarium. These and other
classes were interesting and
learning experiences. They were
taught by experienced instructors
at the level to inspire both young
and old minds to think and
acquire knowledge.
We had fun overeating at meal
time, particularly the variety
of sweets, including soft serve
ice cream and real ice cream
at the MSU dairy. We made
new friends. In fact, the entire
program was structured to
cultivate the Spartan Family
concept. Already Parker again
has requested to participate in the
program next summer and his 7
year old brother also has asked
to be included. We are looking
forward to the 2007 summer
sessions and will register early to
get some more great classes.
NEW ORLEANS PROJECT
Truly enjoyed reading your
article on MSU’s New Orleans
Project (Fall 2006) about
the efforts of Professor Joyce
Grant and her students to help
revitalize the New Orleans
school system. Whoever would
have thought that one of “the
darkest corners of corners of the
earth” would be America’s Gulf
Coast. The efforts of professor
Grant and her students personify
the essence of what it means to
be a Spartan.
☛ Gallinagh was a starter on
MSU’s national championship
football teams of 1965
and 1966. Also, last December
another group of 53 MSU
students and faculty volunteers,
organized by horticulture professor
Art Cameron, spent five days
refurbishing New Orleans’ largest
park. They stayed at Camp
SPARTAN INVENTOR
I’d like to submit another
candidate for your Gallery of
MSU Inventors (Winter 2006).
Whenever you switch on your
TV and listen to stereophonic
sound, you are listening to the
circuitry developed and patented
by James R. Simanton, ’47,
and his partners at Telesonics
Systems Inc. Many large
corporations competed to
develop such a system. Jim,
from Benton Harbor, who
graduated from MSU in
1947 with dual BS degrees
in Chemistry and Electrical
Engineering, came up with the
system. The Foundation we
developed was recognized in
1991 as an MSU Benefactor.
NEW GLBT ALUMNI GROUP
I was very excited to see your
report in the Fall 2006 issue
about the development and
creation of the gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender (GLBT)
Alumni Association. It’s a historic
event in MSU’s alumni history.
Back when I was attending MSU
in the middle sixties there was
absolutely no visibility concerning
gay and lesbian issues. Please
continue to help draw the
attention of the thousands of
alumni across the globe who also
happen to be glbt!
UPDATE
}Dale Darling (“A Spartan Conquers Mount Everest,” Fall 2004),
’87, M.S. ’91, has now conquered the highest peak on all Seven Continents.
On November 21, Dale summited Mount Kosciuszko, at
7,280 feet the highest peak of the Australian continent. Only a few
climbers have achieved the seven peaks mountaineering goal.
}Thomas McGuane (p. 10, Winter 1990), novelist, essayist, screenwriter
and movie director, shows in his words over time how he
evolved into one of America’s premier literary figures in Conversations
With Thomas McGuane (University Press of Mississippi, 2006).
}Mary Ann Ramsey (p. 14, Fall 2006), ’75, president of Betty
group allowed to reserve seats aboard Virgin Galactic’s suborbital
space flights.
