ALUMNI CAREER SERVICES SCORES ANOTHER HIT By Robert Bao, Editor Most of you probably don’t pay much attention to “Alumni Career Services,” one of our listed benefits of membership. But some of you, especially those seeking jobs or a career change, find this benefit to be worth the cost of membership in itself—and then some. As the assistant director for communication, I’m usually the first person to see feedback from alumni that comes via email, whether it’s related to the magazine, our operations, upcoming events, or some other issue. I’ve been struck by how appreciative the users of our alumni career services are when they actually land a job or otherwise fulfill a career-change objective. One recent email, for example, recounted a life-transforming experience arising from someone who put to use career advice from Dr. Patrick Scheetz, assistant director of the MSU Alumni Association and longtime associate director of MSU’s Career Services & Placement and also former director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute. Dr. Scheetz was also the author for 27 years of Recruiting Trends, the bible for new college graduates entering the marketplace. This particular alumnus was facing a volatile situation at work and wondered if he should change companies, perhaps even careers. After a face-to-face consultation with Dr. Scheetz, he was advised to update his resume and devise a career plan, which he implemented point-by-point. Within the year, his career turned in a direction where he was able to recapture his passion and achieve his career goals. “You may pause from time to time and wonder if you make a difference to all of the students and alumni that you help day in and day out,” he wrote. “I wanted to let you know that indeed, you certainly do make a difference. Thanks Dr. Scheetz, I appreciate your help.” Should you need alumni career services, please visit www.msualum.com/careers. There you can see the gamut of career services offered to our members. Last year we had 3,276 job listings that our members could access. This year, we already have more than 1,000 job listings. In addition, last year 677 of our members listed resumes on the website. Last year we critiqued nearly 1,500 resumes. “Our service is not a silver bullet, but it can help if you put in the work,” says Scheetz. “We try to help as much as we can. I appreciate the positive feedback we receive, but with every success story, you have an alum who worked diligently to do things right.” As I said at the outset, use of our Alumni Career Services is a benefit of membership in the MSU Alumni Association. As a member, you can post your resume in the Resume Database, search Job Listings for ones matching your interests, subscribe for job listings (one or multiple-employer categories) so you are notified when employers post job openings, and post a description of your business in the Spartan Business Card Directory, a new service we’ve recently unveiled. Employers that use Alumni Career Services must register and enter a Username and Password. Then, they can add, review, edit, and delete their own job listings; extend or reduce job-listing deadlines; search resumes of MSU alumni for applicants that match their interests; and enter job listings using word processing formats. When employers post job openings, job seekers subscribed for job listings in the employer category immediately receive an email. Are You Moving? MSUFCU Study Abroad Scholarship recipients pose with members of the Board of Directors of the MSU Federal Credit Union Congratulations to the 2006 recipients of the MSU Federal Credit Union Study Abroad Scholarship Michigan State University and the Office of Study Abroad are pleased to announce that in 2006, 108 students have been awarded MSUFCU Study Abroad Scholarships. These scholarships are funded in perpetuity by a generous gift from the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and are available to all MSU students, regardless of their major. In 2006, students from several different colleges including Nursing, Engineering, Agriculture & Natural Resources, Business and Education traveled to locations around the world to enhance their educational experience at MSU. Students studied such diverse topics as Antarctic System Science in Antarctica; Food, Environment and Social Systems in Australia and New Zealand; Forensic Anthropology and Human Identification in England; and Food, Nutrition and Health in Tanzania. To date, over 175 students have received an MSUFCU Study Abroad Scholarship. When fully funded in 2007, over 130 students will benefit from this scholarship annually.
