<strong>The</strong> Development of Skill <strong>in</strong> Action <strong>in</strong> Cosmic Consciousness<br />

as Described by the <strong>Bhagavad</strong>-<strong>Gita</strong><br />

In cosmic consciousness the <strong>in</strong>dividual's awareness, permanently established <strong>in</strong> pure consciousness,<br />

the unified field of natural law, is <strong>in</strong> tune with the totality of natural law. <strong>The</strong> qualities of<br />

<strong>in</strong>ner balance or stability, and <strong>in</strong>ner freedom or fulfillment grow <strong>in</strong> life as cosmic consciousness<br />

develops. <strong>The</strong>se qualities contribute to skill <strong>in</strong> action by provid<strong>in</strong>g calmness, breadth of vision,<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ner bliss. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Bhagavad</strong>-<strong>Gita</strong>'s pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Yogasthah kuru karmani—"Established <strong>in</strong><br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g perform action"—is further discussed <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g article <strong>in</strong> this series on <strong>Maharishi</strong><br />

He whose m<strong>in</strong>d is unshaken <strong>in</strong> the midst<br />

of sorrows, who amongst pleasures is<br />

free from long<strong>in</strong>g, from whom attachment,<br />

fear and anger have departed, he is<br />

said to be a sage of steady <strong>in</strong>tellect.<br />

Thus, as <strong>Maharishi</strong> expla<strong>in</strong>s, Lord Krishn notes that one who has the <strong>in</strong>ner balance<br />

that characterizes cosmic consciousness is found to be free from attachment and completely<br />

stable. Such a person is described as hav<strong>in</strong>g a "steady <strong>in</strong>tellect"—broad compre-<br />
