<strong>Custodian</strong>/<strong>Utility</strong> <strong>Worker</strong><br />

(<strong>Class</strong> <strong>III</strong>)<br />

JOB ANALYSIS<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Custodian</strong>/<strong>Utility</strong> <strong>Worker</strong> (<strong>Class</strong> <strong>III</strong>) is responsible for properly maintaining the grounds<br />

and facilities of the <strong>District</strong> in a safe and efficient manner. By providing proper<br />

maintenance to ensure the exterior and interior environment is safe, secure, and<br />

aesthetically attractive. In addition this position supports Custodial operations by performing<br />

cleaning duties, as needed and directed, to provide students, employees and community<br />

with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play and<br />

develop.<br />

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

<strong>Utility</strong> <strong>Worker</strong><br />

1. Performs any and all custodial cleaning duties as may be assigned.<br />

2. Substitute for other custodians/grounds staff employees as required.<br />

3. Participate in snow removal by shoveling, salting, or plowing as required.<br />

4. Perform landscaping duties such as mowing, tree trimming & cutting, weeding,<br />

planting, fertilizing, aerating etc.<br />

5. Police district grounds and pick-up trash as required.<br />

6. Perform maintenance on grounds equipment as assigned.<br />

7. Perform minor maintenance repairs on mechanical equipment.<br />

8. Performs all work assigned in a safe manner using all safety equipment when<br />

required and maintains all tools in a safe operating condition.<br />

9. Perform minor repairs on plumbing electrical, and HVAC equipment to support<br />

building operations and activities. (clogged toilet, dripping faucets, breaker resets,<br />

unclog drain on condensate pan, turn off motor, etc.)<br />

10. Performs carpentry-related repairs and painting as required.<br />

11. Opens and secures doors and windows in support of building activities.<br />

12. Performs all necessary custodial duties in support of building activities.<br />

13. Drives and operates district vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible<br />

manner.<br />

14. Complies with <strong>District</strong> policy, local, state and federal laws and procedures for the<br />

use, storage, and disposal of waste, cleaners, chemicals, and all other products<br />

and materials used in performing duties.<br />

15. Completes work assignments professionally and efficiently.<br />

16. Performs such other tasks and responsibilities as the Director of Facilities and<br />

Property Services or designee may assign.

<strong>Custodian</strong><br />

1. Responsible for performing the cleaning tasks, as assigned for all stadium facilities<br />

including the field house, restrooms, bleachers, concession stand, press box or any<br />

building that is associated with the athletic complex (and cleaning other <strong>District</strong><br />

buildings, as may be needed, during the summer months).<br />

2. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas clean,<br />

safe and neat at all times.<br />

3. Performs snow removal and salting.<br />

4. Cleans, dust mops, scrubs and waxes resilient floors with use of appropriate<br />

equipment (i.e., scrubber, buffer, etc.) as needed to protect floor finish.<br />

5. Dry mops floors in rooms and hallways.<br />

6. Cleans cafeteria floors of any spills and/or debris, and properly disposes of refuse.<br />

<strong>Custodian</strong>s will routinely break-down cafeteria tables/benches for cleaning in<br />

between table/bench tops, sides, legs and underside of each. Tables/benches will<br />

be cleaned during summer cleaning; breaks; and as determined by the supervisor.<br />

7. Cleans and vacuums carpeted surfaces.<br />

8. Spot cleans and scrubs walls.<br />

9. Empties wastebaskets and properly disposes of refuse.<br />

10. Cleans, scrubs and disinfects bath and shower room areas, including walls, sinks,<br />

bowls and glass mirrors. Stocks toilet paper and towel dispensers.<br />

11. Changes light bulbs.<br />

12. Cleans whiteboards (blackboards where necessary) and erasers.<br />

13. Cleans and disinfects water fountains.<br />

14. Cleans, and disinfects as needed, chairs and desk tops in classrooms and office<br />

areas.<br />

15. Cleans glass in windows and doors both on the inside and outside.<br />

16. Moves furniture/equipment within buildings and sets up cafeteria for lunch and<br />

programs as required for various activities and as directed by the supervisor,<br />

principal and/or head custodian. <strong>The</strong> head custodian must have approval of<br />

department supervisor(s) and/or principal to direct other custodians.<br />

17. Maintains cleanliness in classrooms, including but not limited to trash cans, floors,<br />

chalkboard, pencil sharpener, desk tops, walls, window sills, window glass, door<br />

glass and sinks.<br />

18. Maintains cleanliness in restrooms and locker rooms, including but not limited to<br />

trash cans, sinks, toilets, urinals, partitions, walls, lockers, dusting, graffiti removal,<br />

floors, and shower stalls.<br />

19. Maintains cleanliness in the cafeteria, including but not limited to floors, walls, and<br />

trash cans.

20. Maintains cleanliness in gyms and auditoriums, including but not limited to floors,<br />

walls, trash cans, bleachers, seating, graffiti removal, and dusting.<br />

21. Maintains cleanliness in hallways, entrances and stairs, including but not limited to<br />

glass, floors, water coolers, steps, handrails, walls, and dusting (high & low).<br />

22. Maintains cleanliness in the office area, including but not limited to trash cans, floors,<br />

walls, and dusting.<br />

23. Maintains cleanliness in storage room(s), including but not limited to keeping them<br />

accessible and organized.<br />

24. Maintains cleanliness around the exterior of the building, including but not limited to<br />

sidewalks, signage, lighting, grass, landscaping, playground, and fields.<br />

25. Maintains cleanliness in kitchens, including but not limited to floors, walls,<br />

equipment, storage, and trash.<br />

26. Complies with <strong>District</strong> policy, local, state, and federal laws and procedures for the<br />

use, storage, and disposal of waste, cleaners, chemicals, and all other products and<br />

materials used in performing required duties.<br />

27. Assists in maintaining a proper inventory of supplies.<br />

28. Performs all work assigned in a safe manner using all safety equipment when<br />

required and maintains all tools in safe operating condition.<br />

29. Completes work assignments professionally and in a timely manner.<br />

30. Informs department supervisors and principal of equipment failure, needed repairs<br />

and building maintenance concerns.<br />

31. Performs such other tasks and responsibilities as the Director of Facilities and<br />

Property Services or designee may assign.<br />

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS<br />

1. High <strong>School</strong> Diploma or equivalent.<br />

2. Three years’ experience in school district maintenance/custodial work or a related<br />

field preferred.<br />

3. Must be able to operate automatic and standard transmission vehicles and all<br />

<strong>District</strong>-owned vehicles.<br />

4. Must possess a good driving record. Continued employment with the <strong>Norwin</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> is contingent upon the employee’s possession of a valid<br />

Pennsylvania driver’s license.<br />

5. Ability to work off of ladders, scaffolds and at heights.<br />

6. Ability to regularly lift a minimum of 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds and on<br />

occasion be able to lift 50 – 100 pounds.<br />

7. Must possess physical ability to perform any and all work required. Possession of<br />

and consistent ability to exercise physical and manual dexterity, including the ability

to grasp and maintain control of equipment, pushing, pulling, twisting at the waist,<br />

8. Ability to comprehend and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or<br />

diagram form.<br />

9. Ability to properly operate all custodial cleaning equipment, including the proper<br />

use of chemicals and solutions as appropriate to the particular equipment.<br />

10. Ability to maintain a professional relationship with supervisors, other staff, parents,<br />

students and the public.<br />

11. Ability to work independently and in teams to complete job duties and assignments<br />

in a timely manner with limited supervision.<br />

12. Ability to satisfactorily complete all performance responsibilities listed within this<br />

document.<br />

13. Must obtain and maintain all current and future certificates and licenses mandated<br />

by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> required to perform this<br />

job.<br />

14. Must have the ability to successfully complete the performance responsibilities<br />

listed within this document on an ongoing basis.<br />

REPORTS TO<br />

Director of Facilities and Property Services, Supervisor of Energy Conservation and<br />

Custodial Services, or their designee.<br />

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT<br />

Negotiated as per the contract between A.F.S.C.M.E. Local #1474 and the <strong>Norwin</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>District</strong>.<br />

EVALUATION<br />

Annual evaluation will be performed by Director of Facilities and Property Services or<br />

designee.<br />

Approved by Administration and Provided to the Board of <strong>School</strong> Directors on November 19, 2012.
