Student Speakers“A Commitment to Excellence”Rachel GeizuraMs. Rachel M. Geizura, the daughter of G<strong>in</strong>ger Geizura, isrepresent<strong>in</strong>g National Honor Society. She serves as avarsity cheerleader, a Student Council <strong>School</strong> Boardrepresentative, and a member of Interact, National HonorSociety, and the German Club. She was the 2010 HughO’Brian Youth Leadership Conference Award Recipient,and she served as chairperson for the first and secondannual“P<strong>in</strong>k-Out” football games at <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> High <strong>School</strong>.She is also a student secretary <strong>in</strong> the High <strong>School</strong> office.Mr. Geofrey R. Holl<strong>in</strong>ger, who represents Interact Cluband Show Choir, is the son of Andrea and RichardHoll<strong>in</strong>ger. He is president of Interact, vice president ofStudents Aga<strong>in</strong>st Destructive Decisions, treasurer of theShow Choir, secretary of the Theater Club, and a memberof National Honor Society, Student Council, DiversityClub, Japanese Club, Select Choir, and A Capella Choir.Geofrey Holl<strong>in</strong>gerDom<strong>in</strong>ic LeaderMr. Dom<strong>in</strong>ic J. Leader represents the Senior Class. Theson of Darlene and William Leader, he has served as a classofficer for the Junior and Senior classes. He is a member ofInteract, Future Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Leaders of America, the MathQuiz Team, and National Honor Society. He plays both <strong>in</strong>housebaseball and basketball and serves as baseballmanager. He is also a world champion <strong>in</strong> Karate, claim<strong>in</strong>ghis first world title at the 2010 World Games <strong>in</strong>Sacramento, California.Nicole ShuckhartMs. Nicole M. Shuckhart is speak<strong>in</strong>g on behalf of StudentCouncil. Nicole, who is the daughter of Judith and AnthonyShuckhart, is president of Student Council, and is a memberof Interact and National Honor Society. She was a threeyearmember of Spanish Club and serves as High <strong>School</strong>yearbook editor. She coaches adaptive baseball throughPAL <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong>, an organization that gives everyone a chanceto play ball regardless of their ability or disability. She alsoworks as a cashier at Target.


Guest SpeakerMr. Mike Shanahan<strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Class of 2008History Major, University of PittsburghWide Receiver, Pitt Panthers Football TeamMichael Andrew Shanahan, the son of Michael and Diane Shanahan,will be the keynote speaker. A member of <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Classof 2008, Michael is currently a History Major at the University ofPittsburgh where he has become known as a standout wide receiverfor the Pitt Panther football team. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Panther website,Mike is a “veteran receiver whose size, smarts and strong hands areassets <strong>in</strong> Pitt's multiple no-huddle offensive attack...a dist<strong>in</strong>guishedstudent who is a two-time honoree on the Big East All-AcademicFootball Team.” In the 2010 season, Mike scored a touchdown and had 43 catches for589 yards (13.7 average). Dur<strong>in</strong>g his high school career, he was a Division I prospect<strong>in</strong> both football and basketball. His football feats <strong>in</strong>cluded more than 100 catches for1,998 yards and 30 touchdowns. In a game aga<strong>in</strong>st Gateway, Mike caught fivetouchdown passes. That same year, <strong>in</strong> a game aga<strong>in</strong>st Pittsburgh Central Catholic, hehad a 98-yard touchdown reception. Mike led <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> to the WPIAL Class AAAAplayoffs <strong>in</strong> each of his f<strong>in</strong>al two seasons.

National Honor Society Purpose and ActivitiesMr. Paul Amic, AdvisorThe National Honor Society promotes character, leadership, scholarship andcommunity service among the students of <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>. Further,it provides activities and opportunities for them to give back to the schooland local communities while enjoy<strong>in</strong>g educational, cultural and socialactivities. Throughout the year, the National Honor Society participates <strong>in</strong> avariety of activities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Homecom<strong>in</strong>g, You’ve Got a Friend Day,Powderpuff Football, Induction Ceremony, and an Annual National HonorSociety Trip. They also complete numerous <strong>in</strong>dividual community projects.Interact Club Purpose and ActivitiesMs. Debra Spang, AdvisorThe Interact Club is a service organization that is open to all students andsponsored by Rotary with the goal of provid<strong>in</strong>g service to our communityand to the world. Students provide service to the High <strong>School</strong> throughrecycl<strong>in</strong>g and to the community through the read-a-thon, Hobgobl<strong>in</strong> Hikes,You’ve Got a Friend Day, Presents for Patients and Adopt-a-Highway onNike Site Road. The club provides service worldwide by rais<strong>in</strong>g money anddonat<strong>in</strong>g to causes such as Children’s Safe Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Water Fund, Relief forHaiti, Rotary’s Polio Fund and Operation Christmas Child.Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)Purpose and ActivitiesMs. Renee Greene, AdvisorFCCLA has been a community service organization at <strong>Norw</strong><strong>in</strong> High <strong>School</strong>for 20 years. The group formerly operated as SCAF, Students Car<strong>in</strong>g aboutFamilies. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for personal developmentand preparation for adult life through the Family and Consumer Sciencecurriculum. Students develop self-esteem, communication skills andleadership abilities through community <strong>in</strong>volvement. The new affiliationwith the State and National FCCLA has provided additional opportunities todevelop these skills through conference education, competitive events, andnetwork<strong>in</strong>g with other schools. Service <strong>in</strong>volvement cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>in</strong>cludeactivities such as the W<strong>in</strong>ter Outerwear Drive for the Salvation Army,provid<strong>in</strong>g volunteers for the Hobgobl<strong>in</strong> Hike (Westmoreland Parks andRecreation), Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Decorat<strong>in</strong>g for the Holidays atlocal elderly care facilities, Secret Santa Project, Valent<strong>in</strong>es for Vets, and aWalk-a-thon to benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank.
