50 GAMES
& COUNTING
By JOHN By John FORRESTER Forrester
6
Ainslie Football Clubs opening game against the
Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will be even more
important as two of the clubs key players play their
50th game.
Captain John Holmes and fellow Victorian Ben
Hughes will reach the milestone when they run onto
Ainslie Oval in the second round of the newly formed
North East Australian Football League.
The team will also be unfurling their 2010 AFL
Canberra Premiership flag when they host the
new GWS team for the first time in what will be
an eventful
Saturday
afternoon.
Despite the significance of the game, the players are
striving to treat it just like any other season opener
and get a win to put extra gloss on the day.
John Holmes is one of
the players reaching the
achievement and was
recently reinstated as the
club’s captain after winning
the Premiership in his debut
season as skipper.
After being scouted from an Under 18’s club in
Victoria John has turned out to be a key member of
the current squad.
Ainslie FC also assisted the teams leader in getting
his apprenticeship in plumbing and he has shown his
loyalty by staying at the club for four years.
The player said that the 50 game milestone had
slipped his mind and that he is expecting a good and
tough match from the new club.
Fellow Victorian Ben Hughes is the other player
who will be playing his 50th game after starting his
career in North Melbourne as a rookie.
After being delisted in 2007, Coach Chris Rouke
quickly took the opportunity to invite the player
up to Canberra to have a look around, where he
instantly fell in love with the place.
Just like with skipper John Holmes, the club
helped the talented youngster get used to his new
surroundings by helping him find a job and a place
to live.
The 49 game player is not treating the day any
differently and is just hoping for a win to start the
new season.
But I think whether it’s my 50th or 55th game it’s
still going to be the same, just ask for a win and
hope that everyone plays well.
Both players would trade all the praise for a first up
win against the competitions newcomers, and with a
little luck this Saturday.
