Casinos Slovenia’s casino and entertainment tourism is an important and attractive element of our tourist offer. It has an almost forty-year tradition based on a complete tourist and casino package. In addition to casinos, guests are attracted by quality hotel services, diverse culinary fare, recreational and shopping facilities, cultural events, dancing and entertainment, fashion shows, beauty contests as well as congresses and business meetings. Indeed, Janez Vajkard Valvasor, a Slovene mathematician wrote of “extraordinary walking on snowy mountains’’ as early as the 17th century. Today, skiing remains the most popular sport in Slovenia, reflected in consistently good competition results and fine organization of skiing events, such as the World Cup Ski Jumping and Flying in Planica, the men’s slalom and giant slalom for the Vitranc Cup (World Cup) in Kranjska Gora, the women’s slalom and giant slalom races for the Golden Fox Trophy in Maribor and biathlon races across the Pokljuka plateau. Elan, a Slovenian company, makes skis for the best in the world. Slovenia boasts a total of 48 ski 0 centres with proper infrastructure, with 6 cable cars, 45 chair lifts, 280 ski lifts and 272 kilometres of ski trails spread across an area of 1202 hectares where up to 50,000 skiers can ski. De rigueur facilities include snow machines, special trails for snowboarding, sledging and cross-country enthusiasts, lighting for night skiing and attractive culinary offers. Expert maintenance of well-groomed slopes and trails is now a feature of all ski centres, the biggest and most popular of which are Kranjska Gora, Krvavec, Rogla, Kanin, Vogel, Pohorje, Cerkno and Golte. Skiing is possible from December until March, and some years as late as the beginning of May. This noble game fell out of favour during and after the war and the Bled course was renovated only in 1972. An upsurge of Slovenian golf began in the nineties, when renowned architect Donald Harradine, who had redesigned the Bled course, also constructed courses at Lipica and later at Mokrice. Golf is becoming an increasingly popular sport in Slovenia; there are more than thirty clubs and more than 3,500 golfers in the Slovenian Golf Association, which became a full member of the European Golf Association in 1985.
