MANUAL 2008
Dear partners,
dear friends of Slovenia
In the year that I have had the opportunity and honour to address you in the publication before you,
Slovenia has taken great strides forward in terms of ever more intensive integration into the EU. 2007
opened with our adoption of the euro, we have continued getting ready for our entry into the common
Schengen area, and also preparations for our country’s EU Presidency.
However, Slovenia is not just integrating into the European and broader global area in simply formal
ways, but also in the sense of the country’s envisioned qualitative development. Slovenia, as a part
of central and south-eastern Europe, has given the concept of sustainable development the highest
priority among development plans, in line with the general positive global trend. Preserving and
motivating balanced development of our unspoilt natural environment, along with economic and
including tourist development, has been given pride of place in the development plans of our country.
For those who have already visited Slovenia, the question ‘why’ is not difficult to answer. Among all
the elements of our tourist offer which enchant visitors during their stay, one element, which is most characteristic for our country,
most commonly stands out. That is the unspoilt or well-preserved countryside which it’s possible to come across at every step. The
colour green, a synonym for unspoilt nature, is intertwined in the colours of our country wherever you go. Not least, Slovenia takes
second place in Europe in terms of forest cover per capita, as almost 60% of the country is covered by forest. The other element of
our country’s unspoilt environment is its water. Slovenia is among the leading European countries in terms of having the cleanest
drinking water. Numerous surface and subterranean streams and rivers, lakes, springs and waterfalls bear witness to our rich wealth
of water. There are few other European countries that could enjoy this in such a relatively small area. It’s precisely this wealth of
high-quality water that is, just like the rest of the unspoilt natural world, available always, to everyone, anywhere and on a highquality
level in Slovenia. Water as an element of authenticity and purity excellently symbolises that which Slovenia offers its guests
– authentic, well-preserved and unspoilt countryside, as a basic pre-condition for health care. And what else could we offer guests
other than an environment where they are able to fill their body and spirit with new energy and afford themselves a holiday that
they have always wished for.
When defining its future development, especially the development of tourism, Slovenia has committed itself to preserving surface
and subterranean water and the sea and keeping their exploitation to levels that ensure their natural regeneration. We have
committed to this for ourselves and also as a consequence of our care for the high-quality offer to our guests who visit our country.
Nowadays, Slovenia does not merely offer guests a holiday or a break but above all an experience. For this reason so many guests
who have been here have fallen in love with it themselves.
Esteemed partners of Slovenian tourism, I invite you to enthuse new guests to visit this country that is set in Europe between the
Adriatic Sea, the Alps and the Pannonian plain together with us, and to remind those who have already visited that holidays in
Slovenia always fulfil their expectations or even more – that a visit to Slovenia always is a pleasant surprise and thrill.
Welcome to Slovenia.
about slovenia
Wherever you come to Slovenia from, it is only a stone’s
throw away. Vienna is a mere 230km from the Slovenian
border, Budapest 240km, and Milan 460km. Slovenia
is only about 8 hours from Prague by car. One of the
younger European countries, it is well-connected to the
world by road, rail, sea and air.
Where is it? Slovenia is between mountainous Austria and
Italy, the plains of Hungary and the warm Adriatic sea. Its
diverse landscape always astonishes first-time visitors.
There are the snow-covered Alps and Triglav National
Park with countless glacial valleys, gorges, waterfalls and
crystal-clear wild waters. There is also the Mediterranean
coast, the unspoilt karst world with plateaus, fields, valleys
and disappearing lakes and rivers. There are more than
8,000 subterranean caves, ranging from the world-famous
Postojna and Škocjan caves with their picturesque stalactites,
stalagmites and translucent curtains, to less accessible caves
you may explore in the company of experienced local guides.
There are renowned health resorts and health spas developed
around numerous springs with thermal and mineral water, as
well as ancient villages and medieval towns, historic castles
and modern casinos.
It takes around two hours for a visitor to drive from
magnificent rugged alpine peaks to the sunny turquoise
Adriatic. From Ljubljana, the capital, you can be in the heart
of the Alps in an hour, and the lovely Pannonian plain is no
more than three hours away. The primeval forests in southern
Slovenia are only an hour from Ljubljana. Few other countries
offer such diverse landscapes and natural habitats with
abundant endemic indigenous flora and fauna.
Slovenia boasts a perfect day combining skiing in the morning
with sunbathing on the coast in the afternoon. Breakfast may
be taken with shepherds in an alpine meadow as you go on
to enjoy an after-dinner glass of wine at a wine cellar on the
Pannonian plain. You may travel through time in fascinating
museums, castles, churches and galleries all day, then flirt
with lady luck at one of Europe’s best casinos in the evening.
Perhaps today might involve the attractions of a farm holiday
in stunning countryside, whereas tomorrow has a top cultural
event in store. Families, business travellers and those who
enjoy active holidays have limitless opportunities in Slovenia.
Walkers can enjoy the tranquillity of the mountains, while
sports climbers, skiers, bikers, canoeists, boaters, fishermen,
hunters, golfers, horse riders and others may enjoy their
favourite pastimes in an unrivalled diversity of landscapes.
Many Slovenian dishes owe their origins to the blend of
three great European cultures - the pannonian, alpine and
mediterranean. The oldest Slovenian dishes are made from
flour and groats. The best-known are various kinds of bread
made for festivals with appear nowadays in the form of
braided loaves or wreathes, štruklji (roulades) that Slovenes
make in as many as 70 different ways, stuffed with sweet
fillings, meat or vegetables, and žganci. Potica is a real
Slovenian speciality, a dessert roulade filled with walnuts and
raisins traditionally eaten at Christmas and other festivals. The
annual killing of a pig is a traditional rural event from which
many fine foods are made, such as groats and white sausage,
blood sausage, roasts, stuffed tripe, smoked sausage, salami,
ham, bacon, and pršut (prosciutto), the highest quality and
most prized product of the Karst region. Poultry recipes,
especially those for goose, chicken and duck have been passed
from generation to generation. Naturally, in a country with a
coast, there is a great diversity of seafood, most often found
on menus in Primorska. Every good gostilna (inn) has plenty of
these dishes to sample.
Slovenia is also a true wine-growing country. Vines were first
planted here by the Celts, wine production flourished in Roman
times and monks were responsible for the development of
viniculture in the middle ages. There are three wine regions in
Slovenia, Primorska, Posavje and Podravje, and there are 14
districts with recognisable characteristics. Primorska is famous
for its original reds and whites, Karst for its Teran, Koper for
Rumeni Muškat and Malvazija, Vipava for Zelen and Pinela,
Briški for Rebula, Tokaj and Merlot. There are wine cellars
in Dobrovo, Vipava, Sežana and Koper. Posavje is the home
of Cviček, a Slovenian speciality. Bela Krajina is famous for
Metliška Črnina and Bizeljsko-sremiški region for Bizeljčan. The
cellars in Brežice, Šmartno, Krško, Novo mesto and Metlika
are well-known. Maribor in the Podravje region is famous for
Renski Rizling, Sauvignon and Rulandec, while Radgona and
the hills of Kapela produce excellent Traminec and Penina
(the best-known is Zlata Radgonska Penina, produced in line
with the classic champagne method). Ljutomer and Ormož
offer Šipon and Prekmurje in the easternmost part of Slovenia
is famous for Laški Rizling. The largest wine cellars are in
Maribor, Ptuj, Ormož, Ljutomer and Gornja Radgona.
The history and identity of Slovenes are closely linked to their
language, Slovene, which is spoken by only two million people,
and to their lively cultural life. Slovenes accord the highest
value to genuine personal contact, and are proud to afford the
finest hospitality to visitors to this immensely rich corner of
the world.
People are the heart and soul of Slovenia, and this is reflected
in the charming architecture of its cities, towns and villages,
as well as the numerous cultural events that delight first-time
and returning visitors alike.
The sunny alps
In the attractive area around the mighty but easily accessible
Julian Alps, tourism is based in four towns with well-developed
facilities - Bled, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj and Bovec, the main
town in the stunning Soča valley. Most of the area is within
the Triglav National Park (www.tnp.si) which covers
84,000 hectares and is one of the biggest natural parks in
Europe. The park includes high rocky mountains, such as
Triglav itself (2,864m), the highest mountain in Slovenia,
deep river gorges, high karst potholes and friendly alpine
meadows. Numerous native species of flora and fauna
enjoy the protection of the park. Chamois, mountain sheep,
wild roosters, grouse, eagles and marmots are to be found
amongst the unique flora and fauna of the park. The special
status of the park also safeguards the interests of alpine
dairymen, mountaineers and all those who live, work or play in
this fabulous setting.
Beautiful Bled (www.bled.si) is just outside the park, and is
rightly famous for its clifftop medieval castle, lake and island,
upon which perches a 17th century church with a wishing bell.
Bled is a genuine paradise for tourists, also having thermal
springs and other natural attractions, numerous recreational
possibilities, a conference hall, golf course and casino. The
best rowers in the world may be watched in competition on
Lake Bled.
Bohinj (www.bohinj.si) is a starting point for many
mountain hikes, while Lake Bohinj and Bohinjska Bistrica
are a paradise for lovers of fishing or water sports such as
kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hydrospeeding or swimming.
There are plenty of ski slopes and cross-country skiing
trails around Bohinj, and opportunities for mountain biking,
paragliding, sports climbing, horse riding, tennis and golf. The
rich ethnological heritage and cultural life of Bohinj and the
surrounding area enchant visitors, and there is also a new
water park at Bohinjska Bistrica.
Kranjska Gora (www.kranjska-gora.si) is a famous
tourist centre which attracts those seeking summer outdoor
activities such as hiking, mountaineering, cycling, horse riding,
paragliding or fishing, and boasts abundant high-quality ski
slopes in winter. Other joys of winter around Kranjska Gora
include sledging on Vršič, dog sledding and snowmobiling, and
it is also a venue for one leg of the men’s World Cup downhill
skiing. Further delights available include a casino and modern
wellness programmes. The best ski jumpers in the world
gather at Planica, a short drive away, to pit their skill and
courage against one another every March. The current world
record distance was set at Planica, and the first jumps of 100m
and 200m were achieved there.
The Soča Valley, the valley of the emerald river, attracts
those seeking peace as well as lovers of adrenaline. There
are numerous opportunities for water sports from kayaking to
canoeing and rafting. You can also go paragliding, hang-gliding
or cycling and thus get to know this gorgeous valley which is
also loved by fishermen. Bovec (www.bovec.si), Kobarid
and Tolmin (www.lto-sotocje.si) are the best places to
stay, having plenty of guest-houses. Kanin, the highest ski
centre in Slovenia, where it is possible to ski until summer, is
easy to get to from the valley while also being only a couple
of hours drive from the coast. The area was also the scene
of many terrible battles during the First World War, the tragic
story of which is on display in the award winning Kobarid
museum. Picturesque Trenta in the upper part of the valley has
the information office of the Triglav National Park, a museum
and Julijana, a famous alpine botanical garden. Cerkno
(www.cerkno.si) and Idrija (www.rzs-idrija.si)
are attractive towns along the Idrijca River. Idrija has a
famous lace-making tradition, a mercury mine that is now
open to tourists and the Gewerkenegg Castle.
THE GREEN MEDITERrANEAN
The Slovenian coast, fewer than 47 kilometres in length, is
beautifully green. It is a genuine nature reserve of marl and
sandstone and boasts the unique Strunjan cliff which rises 80
metres above the sea and is the highest wall on the northern
Adriatic. The Sečovlje saltworks, which go back to the 13th
century, is a regional park and a rich sanctuary of flora and
fauna with highly important natural and historic heritage.
Sečovlje is a paradise for ornithologists, offering ideal
conditions for birds due to the warm climate and abundance
of food in the saltwork pools. About 200 bird species have
been seen at the saltworks, which provide a natural habitat for
about 80 bird species which nest there.
The beautiful medieval towns of Piran, Izola and Koper are
popular destinations. The historic core of Koper (www.koper.si)
is one of the most picturesque parts of the northern part of the
Istrian Peninsula. Water sports are very important; there are
many regattas in the Bay of Koper and the town has a small
marina. It is also the venue of the Primorska Summer Festival.
The countryside around Koper is exceptionally attractive. The
steep rock walls of Črni Kal and Osp provide an ideal place for
lovers of free climbing and the area boasts specific culinary
and wine offers.
Izola (www.izola.si) is a coastal town with a long fishing
tradition, whose name reveals that it was once an island. The
medieval streets of the town centre bear witness to its rich
history. The town is known for its numerous international
musical, cultural and sporting events such as the ‘Izola
spring cup’ sailing regatta, the ‘Izolacinema’ film festival,
international painting ex-tempore, the ‘Slovenian Open’
international dancing competition and many others.
There are plentiful opportunities to sample local cuisine in
combination with olive oil and high-quality local wines in the
surrounding countryside.
The old seaport of Piran (www.piran.si) lies at the end of
the Piran peninsula; it was enclosed by walls in the Middle
Ages, 200 metres of which still exist. The whole town is
protected as a cultural and historic monument and it has
kept its medieval layout with narrow streets and compact
houses, which rise in steps from the coast into the hills and
give the whole area a typical Mediterranean look. Today it
is an administrative and supply centre as well as being an
important coastal tourist resort with hotels, restaurants and
holiday houses, the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum and an
aquarium, cultural institutions and numerous events.
Portorož (www.portoroz.si) is a town with the longest
tourist tradition in Slovenia and offers comfortable hotels
and modern swimming pools, restaurants and events. It is
a popular conference centre, with various conference and
meeting facilities that can accommodate up to 1500 visitors.
Portorož has a casino, a sports airfield and marina. It is a town
visited by tourists from all over Europe and further afield, and
is an internationally known holiday centre and wellness resort.
There are a number of old Istrian settlements such as Padna,
Krkavče, Koštabona, Pomjan, and Gažon in the Šavrinska
Hills inland from Portorož. The Church of the Holy Trinity in
picturesque Hrastovlje is adorned by late gothic narrative
frescoes, and thus the village is considered to be a real
treasure of medieval fresco arts in Slovenia.
THE MYSTERIOUS KARST
A combination of limestone and water has given the Karst two
faces - one above and one under its surface. On the surface
they have created karst sinkholes, karren, springs, karst
windows and large open plains which become lakes in winter,
such as Planinsko and Cerkniško polje. Below ground there are
numerous potholes and karst caves - the Slovenian Karst is
said to be the most beautiful part of our planet’s subterranean
world. There are more than 8,000 karst caves and potholes
in Slovenia, of which 20 of these limestone treasures created
by disappearing karst waters are open to tourists. The most
popular are Postojna Cave, Škocjan Caves, Pivka and Črna
jama Cave, Križna jama Cave and Vilenica.
Postojna Cave (www.postojnska-jama.si), which was
first mentioned in writing in 1213, is the most famous and
frequently visited. Having had more than 26 million visitors
so far, it is the most visited cave in Europe. The caves cover
a total of 21 kilometres, with about five kilometres of these
having electric lighting and handrails. Guided tours begin on
a special electric train, which carries you deep underground
to marvel at this secret world of shining stalagmites and
stalactites of various colours and shapes and little lakes with
crystal clear water. The tour ends with a chance to see the
“human fish” (proteus anguinus), a main attraction of the
cave. This is a blind amphibian rather like a newt, whose
subterranean existence has given its skin a pink colour from
where it gets its name.
After Postojna Cave, the next most famous are Škocjan
Caves (www.park-skocjanske-jame.si) at the heart of the
Škocjan Caves Regional Park. Due to their immense global
importance to natural heritage they have been on UNESCO’s
list of World Natural and Cultural Heritage sites since 1986.
Škocjan Caves possess an extremely large system of cave
passages which are 5.8km long and were created by the
Reka River. ‘Cerkvenikov most’ (a natural bridge) is the most
famous part of the cave. The bridge ascends 50 metres above
the Reka in one of the largest underground caves in Europe.
There are also fascinating flora and fauna in the caves.
The attractions of the Slovenian Karst are unlimited. You
may not be aware that the noble Lipizzaner horses of Vienna
originated in Slovenia. The birthplace of Lipizzaners is Lipica
(www.lipica.org) where they have been bred at the stud
farm for more than four centuries. Today it is a tourist
recreational centre with a riding school and it is known as an
international centre of sports riding events. Visitors can go
horse riding, watch the performances of the Classical Riding
School, take a carriage ride, enjoy a golf course or try their
luck in a casino.
The Karst is also dotted with villages with stone houses, where
excellent wines, especially the red Teran are served and where
pršut (prosciutto) is cured in the bora wind. A typical example
is Štanjel, a fascinating place which boasts a terraced medieval
settlement.
LIVELY LJUBLJANA
Ljubljana (www.ljubljana-tourism.si), the capital of
Slovenia, is a city which suits its 276,000 inhabitants and its
numerous visitors alike. As a medium sized European city, it
maintains the friendliness of a small town while possessing all
the characteristics of a metropolis.
Here, at the meeting point of the cultures of the east and the
west, the old interweaves harmoniously with the new. There
are traces of all five millennia of its history in evidence, among
which are the remains of the Roman town of Emona and the
Old Town with its medieval castle, Renaissance and Baroque
facades, ornamental portals and uneven roofs. The mosaic is
complemented with some lovely bridges over the Ljubljanica
River and the vast Tivoli Park which brings mature woodland
into the very centre of the city.
The present face of Ljubljana originates mainly from the Italian
Baroque, with strong Art Nouveau influences reflected in the
style of numerous buildings built after a major earthquake in
1895.
Jože Plečnik, Slovenia’s greatest and most famous architect,
left a strong personal stamp on his home city in the first half
of the 20th century. The city’s image was later shaped by
some of his students in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and there are
also examples of remarkable contemporary architecture by the
latest generation.
Ljubljana is a city of culture, home of many theatres,
museums and galleries and it also boasts one of the oldest
philharmonic academies in the world. More then 10,000
cultural events take place in the Slovenian capital, such as top
quality musical, theatre and fine arts performances as well as
the alternative and avant-garde which await discovery in any
of the 14 international festivals that take place in Ljubljana.
Numerous cafes and restaurants move outdoors to the banks
of the Ljubljanica and the squares of the city centre in the
warmer months of the year. Here the people of Ljubljana meet
for a morning coffee after their Saturday visit to the market
or their Sunday visit to the flea market or for an evening
chat with friends. Ljubljana always seems to the visitor to be
an exceptionally young city, as there are more than 50,000
students at the various faculties of the university, giving it a
special pulse of youth.
Many scientists come to Ljubljana as its university and
institutes hold fine international reputations. Famous artists
visit it from all over the world because of its creative spirit,
economists for numerous business meetings and fairs and
international experts for conferences.
Ljubljana is a city to which people often travel on business
and then return for pleasure, having fond memories of their
previous visit.
Due to its central location, Ljubljana is also an ideal starting
point to discover the amazingly diverse features and beauty of
Slovenia.
The Ljubljana Tourist Board and its Tourist Information
Centres will be happy to provide information regarding
accommodation, sightseeing tours and conference facilities
in the city and will, in addition, gladly provide you with
promotional brochures and the general travel agent’s manual.
POHORJE AND
THE MARIBOR REGION
Pohorje and the Maribor region (www.maribor-tourism.si)
is a green oasis at the eastern end of the Alps. Pohorje is a
richly forested hilly area of about 1000 square km offering
numerous trails for hikers and lovers of cycling and horse
riding. The various delightful parts of Pohorje include Maribor
and Hoče, Slovenjska Bistrica, Konjice and Zreče, Ruše,
Lovrenc, Ribnica and Slovenj Gradec. Pohorje is a winter
tourist area with skiing centres such as Areh, Rogla and Kope,
and Maribor is a venue for one leg of the women’s World
Cup in Alpine skiing. Pohorje is also popular with lovers of
parachuting, hang-gliding, ballooning and those who enjoy
discovering the diverse flora and fauna of its primeval forest
and pure waters.
Maribor has developed in the foothills of Pohorje. Having about
115,000 inhabitants, it is Slovenia’s second city. It boasts the
oldest vine in the world, which has been growing by the Drava
River for more than four centuries. The Drava River has always
been a symbol of Maribor life, and along its banks there is the
0
picturesque and lively Lent district where raft excursions on
the river are available.
The rich architecture of previous centuries bears witness to the
flourishing history of the city, reflected in the facades of the
houses. Despite its sometimes stormy history, the old town
centre is well preserved with visible remains of the defensive
wall.
Maribor people are renowned as being good organizers
and hosts. There are excellent opportunities for a range of
experiences in Maribor, such as the international multicultural
Lent Festival, the Borštnik gathering which is the culmination
of Slovenian theatrical creativity, events within the frame of
‘The Embrace of the Old Vine’, The Rafter’s Christening, skiing
and a number of other top sports competitions. Maribor Casino
enriches the nightlife of the city.
Extensive vineyards, which rise from the edge of the town
across the hills of Maribor, are interwoven with more than 50
kilometres of wine roads. These roads are strewn with wine
shops and tourist farms, which entice ramblers, cyclists and
‘friends of the iron horse’ with their homemade wine and
food. The wine roads begin to wind up into the hills from the
city streets themselves, where guests may take a chance to
taste selected wines at the underground city cellar, one of the
biggest and oldest classical wine cellars in Europe. The Old
Vine in Maribor is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
Maribor is becoming an important congress centre with its
conference facilities in the Habakuk Convention Centre and
the wellness & spa centre at the Hotel Habakuk. The Fontana
Medical-Recreational Centre offers excellent opportunities for
relaxing holidays.
Maritime travel
Vessels entering Slovenian
territorial waters from abroad
may only dock at the international
border crossings in Koper, Piran (all
year round) or in Izola (summer
only). Upon mooring the vessel, the
vessel, its crew and any passengers
must be registered with the
border authorities. The following
documents must be produced:
valid original documents showing
proof of ownership of the vessel
or authorization from the owner to
use it, the captain’s certificate of
qualification to operate the vessel
and identity documents of all
persons on the vessel.
Visitors with permanent residence
abroad may temporarily import a private
vessel registered abroad, exempt from
paying customs duties. Should the yacht
certificate be invalid or have expired
they may apply for an examination
from the Koper Harbourmaster. When a
vessel which has been taken overland
enters Slovenian territorial waters, it
must be registered with the Maritime
Administration of the Republic of
Slovenia or with the Customs Office.
Piran Bay is a friendly starting point
available to the nautical tourist. All of
these have been awarded the European
Blue Flag for ecology. All marinas
provide fuel, which is also available
at public piers in Piran and Izola. Two
maritime border crossings operate in
Koper and Piran all year round, and
there is an additional maritime border
crossing in Izola from May to October.
Piran Bay attracts lovers of sailing.
Rental of sailing boats is available, but
you will need a valid skipper’s licence
or other qualification to operate it.
Alternatively, an experienced skipper
may be hired together with a sailing
boat. There are sailing schools and trips
by sailing boats available. Many Slovene
lovers of the sea obtained their first
sailing experience on lakes, and thus
there are clubs which organize courses
for skippers, navigation courses and
sailing schools far from the sea shore.
Active Health
Resorts
The wealth of unspoilt natural
assets in Slovenia has led to the
development and recognition of
Slovenian health resorts. The most
important of these assets include
thermal waters of various qualities
and temperatures (from 32 to
73° C), mineral waters, notably
the renowned Radenska Three
Hearts and Donat Mg, followed
by sea water and brine, organic
and inorganic peloids, and the
mediterranean, pannonian and
sub-alpine mountain climates.
The 15 Slovenian natural health
resorts, united under the common
slogan “With Nature to Health”,
beckon visitors seeking an unspoilt
natural environment, thermal
springs, mineral waters, a healthy
microclimate, certified health
professionals and a long tradition in
this field. This abundance of riches
has blended and developed into
the most modern tourist offers in
the field of wellness and a range of
programmes for the preservation of
health and the prevention of illness.
Our health resorts are places where
you can spend pleasant family holidays,
do something for yourself, for your
body and your spirit, and improve your
physical and mental condition. This
is enabled by well equipped health
and recreation centres where you can
swim, jog, stroll, exercise using various
equipment and on attractive playing
fields, play golf and tennis, bowl, ride
horses, ski or cycle while learning to live
life to the full in a healthier way.
CONFERENCE AND
INCENTIVE TRAVEL
Slovenia is perhaps still regarded as
a relatively new destination, despite
having been on the European
conference map since the 1980’s.
This Central European country is a
land where the colourful and relaxed
Mediterranean world blends with the
efficiency of Alpine countries.
The tradition of holding congresses
in Slovenia goes back as far as
1821, when the Congress of the Holy
Alliance was held in Ljubljana. Today’s
advantages of this young EU country
are easy accessibility, geographic and
cultural diversity, meeting facilities with
state-of-the-art technical support as
well as exciting gastronomy allied to
superb wines and genuine hospitality.
Dedicated and experienced professional
congress organisers, destination
management companies, event and
incentive agencies guarantee the success
of your event and that you will get good
value for money.
Slovenia is blessed with a remarkable
variety of landscapes, and thus events
may be planned in cities, at the
seaside, in Alpine resorts, spas or in the
countryside, perhaps in an attractive
historic building. There are full-offer
congress centres that can welcome up to
2,000 delegates and convention hotels
with capacities for up to 1,100 delegates
at your service. Incentive companies
with diverse creative programmes round
off the offer.
The Slovenian Convention Bureau is
a strategic partner of the Slovenian
Tourist Board and its role is to provide
professional and objective advice about
relevant offers to meeting and incentive
planners. All major meeting and
incentive suppliers are members of the
Slovenian Convention Bureau.
Casinos
Slovenia’s casino and entertainment
tourism is an important and
attractive element of our tourist
offer. It has an almost forty-year
tradition based on a complete
tourist and casino package. In
addition to casinos, guests are
attracted by quality hotel services,
diverse culinary fare, recreational
and shopping facilities, cultural
events, dancing and entertainment,
fashion shows, beauty contests as
well as congresses and business
meetings. The casino offer is a
rich blend of gaming, pleasure
and a relaxed atmosphere. The
modern concept of gambling and
entertainment tourism has blended
European tradition and the American
gambling style, creating a new
product that is now more attractive
to Europeans. The response to
this has been exceptional and is
reflected in a greater number of
visitors. More than 90% of visitors
to Slovenian casinos are from
western Europe.
There are presently twelve casinos
and casino entertainment centres in
Slovenia. These are mainly at popular
tourist destinations and in larger cities.
The Slovenian government is soon to
grant a couple of new concessions for
the construction of casinos and a large
number of concessions for gaming
salons. The strategic direction of
Slovenian casinos is towards attracting
tourists. The first Slovenian casino
opened in Portorož (www.casinoportoroz.com)
and was then followed by a casino in
Bled (www.casino-bled.si). A new trend
began to develop in Slovenian casinos
in 1984, with the opening of a new
casino in Nova Gorica (www.hit.si). In
the next ten years various new casinos
opened, such as in Rogaška Slatina,
Maribor (www.casino-maribor.si), Lipica
(www.casino.si/lipica), Ljubljana (www.
casino-lj.si), Kranjska Gora and Otočec.
The largest and the newest is the
Perla entertainment centre of the HIT
Universe of Fun in Nova Gorica, marking
the implementation of a new business
philosophy for Slovenian casinos. Small
entertainment centres focussed on
tourism are to open and more casinos
will appear in urban areas in the
forthcoming period.
Natural and cultural
heritage
The protection afforded to our national and regional
parks demonstrates our special care for the
preservation and presentation of natural and cultural
heritage and tradition.
There are many areas where the preservation of our natural
and cultural heritage also provides opportunities for relaxation
and pleasure. These notably include Triglav National Park
(www.tnp.si), Kozjansko Regional Park (www.kozjanskipark.si),
Škocjan Caves Regional Park (www.park-skocjanskejame.si),
the Three Countries Regional Park of Goričko (www.
park-goricko.org), the Regional Parks of the Logarska Valley
(www.logarska-dolina.si), Lahinja, the Sečovlje salt-pans
(www.kpss.soline.si), Topla, Zgornja Idrijca, Notranjska
Regional Park (www.notranjski-park.si) and others.
Heritage Trails through Dolenjska and Bela Krajina
In Dolenjska and Bela krajina, Slovenia’s southern provinces,
history is particularly coloured by years of resistance to foreign
rule and invasion and by a strong local pride in Slovenian
identity. Fascinating heritage in historic places, archaeology,
rural traditions, religion, festivals and cultural events await
discovery. www.slovenia-heritage.net
SKIING
Slovenia is famous for its rich skiing tradition and there
is a claim that the people of Bloke in Notranjska were
the first in the world to learn how to use skis. Indeed,
Janez Vajkard Valvasor, a Slovene mathematician wrote
of “extraordinary walking on snowy mountains’’ as
early as the 17th century. Today, skiing remains the
most popular sport in Slovenia, reflected in consistently
good competition results and fine organization of skiing
events, such as the World Cup Ski Jumping and Flying
in Planica, the men’s slalom and giant slalom for the
Vitranc Cup (World Cup) in Kranjska Gora, the women’s
slalom and giant slalom races for the Golden Fox Trophy
in Maribor and biathlon races across the Pokljuka
plateau. Elan, a Slovenian company, makes skis for
the best in the world. Slovenia boasts a total of 48 ski
0
centres with proper infrastructure, with 6 cable cars, 45
chair lifts, 280 ski lifts and 272 kilometres of ski trails
spread across an area of 1202 hectares where up to
50,000 skiers can ski. De rigueur facilities include snow
machines, special trails for snowboarding, sledging
and cross-country enthusiasts, lighting for night skiing
and attractive culinary offers. Expert maintenance of
well-groomed slopes and trails is now a feature of all
ski centres, the biggest and most popular of which are
Kranjska Gora, Krvavec, Rogla, Kanin, Vogel, Pohorje,
Cerkno and Golte. Skiing is possible from December
until March, and some years as late as the beginning of
May.
Golf
Slovenia’s first golf course was built at Bled in 1937.
This noble game fell out of favour during and after the
war and the Bled course was renovated only in 1972.
An upsurge of Slovenian golf began in the nineties,
when renowned architect Donald Harradine, who had
redesigned the Bled course, also constructed courses
at Lipica and later at Mokrice. Golf is becoming an
increasingly popular sport in Slovenia; there are more
than thirty clubs and more than 3,500 golfers in the
Slovenian Golf Association, which became a full member
of the European Golf Association in 1985. The Union
of Golf Courses of Slovenia was recently established
uniting 10 golf courses.
HORSE Riding
There has been a recent increase in interest in ‘holidays
in the saddle’ at riding centres, tourist farms with horses
and in equestrian sports. Lipica, the birthplace of the
Lipizzaner horses which are famous for their firm and
graceful step and great learning ability is definitely the
Slovenian centre of equestrianism. Lipica is also famous
as a venue of international traditional equestrian events
and World Cup competitions in dressage.
As well as Lipica, horse riding is possible at Brdo pri Kranju,
the Lepena lodge, Castle Rakičan in Murska Sobota and on
individual tourist farms. There are expert instructors and
qualified riding instructors in some riding centres. Further
information on horse riding in Slovenia is available at:
Historic towns
The heritage of old Slovenian towns and cities tells the tale
of the human settlement of the Slovenian lands and the lives
of many generations. These places are living proof of the
settlement culture that reflects the diversity of our terrain.
These towns and cities, which are mainly medieval, are a
national treasure and present great opportunities for visitors.
As many as a third of Slovenian towns are protected cultural
monuments and many of the rest have parts of their area
which are monuments.
The Slovenian Historic Towns Association formed to promote
the renewal of the old town centres and their cultural heritage.
Current member towns are Idrija, Koper, Kranj, Novo mesto,
Piran, Ptuj, Radovljica, Slovenske Konjice, Škofja Loka and
Tržič.
Castles and manors
Nobody knows exactly how many castles and manors
once stood in Slovenia, but it is estimated that there
were several thousand. The sands of time have left
only the ruins of some castle buildings. Some castles
and manors have only been preserved in folk tradition,
while others have been renovated and become modern
museums, first class hotels or are becoming cultural and
tourist centres with a diversity of delights.
museums and galleries
There are many museums and galleries in Slovenia that
deserve your attention in addition to those listed below. They
are scattered across the country. Most offer expert guided
tours in foreign languages, although larger groups need
to book these in advance. Detailed information is available
from tourist information offices during your stay or from this
CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES
Many Slovenian churches are real art galleries. They all
deserve a visit, so it may be difficult to choose. Three
pilgrimage churches are certainly among the most
popular: the Basilica of the Virgin at Brezje, the parish
and pilgrimage Church of the Holy Mother at Ptujska
Gora, and the Church of the Virgin Mary at Sveta Gora
above Solkan.
Monasteries were often built close to churches. There were
twelve male and seventeen female orders in Slovenia. There
are many attractions that can be viewed by visitors at the
Cistercian Monastery in Stična and the Carthusian Monastery
in Pleterje.
Brezje
As long ago as the 15th century, the Chapel of St Vitus stood
at the edge of Brezjansko polje. The adjacent Chapel of the
Virgin was built in 1800, with frescoes by Leopold Layer, who
also painted the miracle-working Madonna with child. Miracles
and granted prayers began to occur below the painting from
1863 on, drawing ever greater numbers of pilgrims and thus
the present church was built between 1889 and 1900. The
local bishop subsequently passed the church to Franciscan
priests, who built a monastery next to it. A picture of the
Virgin Mary was solemnly crowned in the presence of 30,000
believers on 1 September 1907, and in 1988 Pope John Paul
II conferred the honorary title of basilica upon the Church of
Brezje. Eight years later the Pope himself visited Brezje. More
recently, one of the most prominent pilgrims was Laura Bush,
the First Lady of the United States, in June 2001.
The main annual pilgrimage events are the Feast of the
Virgin Mary (24 May), the Feast of the Assumption (15
August), Angels’ Sunday, the anniversary of the coronation of
the painting (the first Sunday in September), the day of prayer
for spiritual vocations (the second Saturday in September) and
the anniversary of the consecration of the Basilica (the first
Sunday in October).
Ptujska Gora
The Gothic Church of the Holy Mother at Ptujska Gora is on a
hill with a beautiful view over the Drava plain. It was formerly
known as Črna Gora and then Maria Neustift, which the Bishop
of Maribor commissioned to the Minorites. The church was first
built at the end of the 14th century and after Turkish raids a
high defence wall was built around it. The magnificent exterior
is enchanting but the Gothic interior enriched by stained
glass windows perhaps even more so. It has a baldachin
Celje altar, the best frescoes in Slovenia, a stone relief of the
Virgin Protectress and a mantle above the high altar dating
from 1764 that visitors adore. The crowd depicted below the
Virgin’s mantle are the Counts of Celje, their relatives and the
European nobility of the time.
The main annual pilgrimage events are the Feast of
the Assumption (15 August) and the anniversary of the
consecration of the church (the seventh Sunday after Easter).
Sveta Gora
The miraculous apparitions of the Holy Mary at Skalnica in
1539 were the beginning of the pilgrimage trail to Sveta Gora
above Solkan; the Pilgrimage Church of the Holy Mary was
built at the top of a mountain path boasting stunning views in
1544. It was taken over by Franciscan monks who had been
banished from Bosnia in 1565, but Emperor Joseph II ordered
the church to be demolished and a monastery built by the
Franciscans. They returned and rebuilt the church in 1900.
The building was destroyed once again during WWI, but a new
stone church was constructed, together with a monastery,
pilgrimage house and guesthouse, in 1924. The top of
Sveta gora, 681 metres above sea level offers a marvellous
panorama from where visitors can see the Adriatic Sea, the
Friulian plain and Triglav in the Julian Alps. Gorica Museum has
put on an exhibition displaying the tragic events of the Soča
Front.
The main pilgrimage gatherings are held on the Feast
Days of Mary and the Coronation of Mary (3rd Sunday after
Pentecost).
Stična Monastery
The monastery was built between
1132 and 1156 and is the oldest such
institution in Slovenia. It is a complex
with sturdy protective defences covering
approximately 250 by 300 metres. Within
its walls are the triple-naved basilica of
the Church of the Holy Mother of Sorrows
and a Gothic cloister, plus residential
areas for the fathers and brothers of
the Cistercian Order. The oldest parts
are Romanesque and date from the
12th century. The church underwent
Baroque renovation in the 17th century,
and the present hall is of early Gothic
style. Previously encircled by walls,
the monastery defences were further
strengthened by the monks due to Turkish
raids. They built massive defence walls
and towers, three of which still stand
today. The monastery also houses the
Museum of Slovenian religious history,
including a display of old monastery
workshops, the collection of Slovenian folk
religion and the Ursuline collection. On the
ground floor there is a shop selling articles
made in the monastery, including teas by
Father Simon Ašič, a famous herbalist.
Pleterje Carthusian Monastery
The only operating Carthusian Monastery
in Slovenia is in the valley at the foot
of Gorjanci. It was founded by Herman
II, Count of Celje in 1407. It was later
sacked by the Turks, and then rebuilt
with strong fortifications by the monks. It
is surrounded by a three metre high and
2800 metre long wall. The monastery
belonged to the Jesuit Order from 1595
to 1773. It later became the property
of the state but was regained by the
Carthusian order in 1899.
The Church of the Holy Trinity, a rich
library and an art collection remain
from the original monastery. In the east
wing of the monastery, which is open to
visitors, is the collection of the Dolenjska
Museum depicting life in the monastery
and the local area, as well as a collection
of articles made from eggshell. The
monks also offer their famous Pleterje
brandies and bottled pears for sale.
Visiting hours are from 8.30am to
6.30pm daily, closed on Sundays.
Fishing
How about a day spent fishing in fast
clear alpine rivers and lakes, dreamy
karst waters, meadow streams,
low mountain rivers or fascinating
‘disappearing’ karst lakes. Fish
are managed mostly by individual
fishing clubs. These are associations
with special authority as nongovernmental
organisations (NGO’s),
which undertake management on
behalf of the State. They manage
approximately 94 % of Slovenian
waters, whereas the remaining 6 %
are managed by the public Fisheries
Diving
Diving in Slovenian rivers, lakes
and sea is permitted everywhere
except in the fish hatchery at Lake
Bohinj and in shipping lanes and
harbour areas. Diving in karst caves
is also permitted, but only under the
supervision of a professional guide.
During the tourist season clubs offer
guided dives for beginners who have
valid diving documents. A maximum
Kayaking, Canoeing, and
Rafting
All these sports are becoming
increasingly popular in Slovenia
as many of our rivers such as the
Kolpa, Krka and Idrijca are ideally
suited to them. There are water
sports clubs involved professionally
in various tourist centres around
Slovenia. You can join a guided
rafting trip or rent a canoe.
Hiking, Mountaineering,
and Mountain Climbing
Mount Triglav (2864 m), Slovenia’s
highest peak, has various more
and less demanding paths. You do
not have to be an expert climber
to enjoy the Slovenian Alps. If you
prefer hiking, there are numerous
possibilities all over Slovenia. The
trails are well marked, and hikers
can stay overnight in mountain
lodges.
The most popular Slovenian alpine path
runs from the Austrian border near
Maribor to the Adriatic coast at Ankaran.
It crosses Triglav National Park, and can
be walked in thirty days. The European
E-6 and E-7 footpaths also cross
Slovenia. Detailed maps are available at
local tourist offices and some shops.
Tennis
Numerous resorts and health centres
in Slovenia have tennis courts, some
of which are also open in winter.
Hire of tennis equipment is normally
available, and the services of a
tennis pro may be booked at some
tennis centres.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Throughout the year numerous and diverse events, such
as ethnological, cultural, culinary, fairs, and sporting
events take place in cities, towns, and the countryside
around Slovenia. They each offer an excellent opportunity
to get to know the country and its people.
Ljubljana and Maribor have always been important European
festival cities. Here and in other larger towns, the concert
season lasts from June through September. You can attend
opera, ballet, and drama productions, concerts of classical and
popular music and performances by folklore song and dance
ensembles.
It is sometimes difficult to choose the best, most interesting
and picturesque events from the numerous events that take
place in different towns and cities. The following list is a selection
Border Formalities
Border formalities are minimal and in line with European
standards. All those who need visas to visit Slovenia can get
them at the nearest Slovenian Embassy or Consulate to their
country.
http://www.mzz.gov.si/en/visa_information/
Bringing in Items
The flow of goods between member countries of the EU is
tax-free, and regulations are uniform in all member states of
the Union. Restrictions apply only to the transport of tobacco
products and alcoholic beverages, where the amount not
subject to excise tax is limited.
http://carina.gov.si/angl/index.htm
DDV (VAT) tax refunds
As a member of the single European market, Slovenia has
removed the possibility of tax refunds at border crossings
since this form of tax relief no longer exists among the
member states of the EU. Visitors from countries that are
not members of the European Union must have special forms
for purchased goods filled in by sellers. The form must be
stamped by the customs office at the border crossing upon
leaving a member country of the EU. The tax will be returned
by the institutions listed on the form for tax-free purchases.
0
Health Care for Foreign Visitors
Health centres are open from 7.00 to 19.00 during the week in
every larger town in Slovenia.
http://www.zzzs.si/zzzs/internet/zzzseng.nsf
Animals
To cross a border between member countries of the EU (i.e.
for the non-commercial movement of domestic pets, where
the animals return to their home country together with their
owners), the owners of dogs, cats and ferrets must carry
a European Union passport for domestic pets containing
confirmation of vaccination against rabies, and the animals
must be marked in the prescribed fashion. Special regulations
apply to some members of the EU (currently Great Britain,
the Republic of Ireland, and Sweden); details are available
from the Slovenian Veterinary Administration or from local
veterinary institutions. For other domestic pets (rodents,
reptiles, amphibians, aquarium fish, pet birds, etc.) the rules
differ from country to country, so owners should seek further
information in their own country or at: vurs@gov.si
http://www.vurs.gov.si
In line with Commission Decision 2004/203/ES, for the noncommercial
import of animals from third countries (nonmembers
of the EU), dogs, cats and ferrets can travel with
veterinary certificates; the same regulations apply to other
animals as for the non-commercial movement of animals
between member countries.
Because the regulations are linked to individual countries, the
best way to find applicable information is on the internet at:
http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/list_
SLOVENIAN embassies and
consulates abroad
Slovenia has embassies and consulates in many
countries around the world from which you can obtain
general information about Slovenia. Citizens of some
countries need visas for Slovenia, and these can be
obtained at all Slovenian embassies and consulates
abroad. Numerous countries have embassies and
Postojna Cave is the largest karst cave in Slovenia and the most visited show cave in Europe. The cave is open all year round. A visit
to the cave lasts an hour and a half.
Just 9 kilometres from Postojna
Cave stands mighty Predjama
Castle, in the dramatic setting
of a 123-metre cliff.
It is famous above all for the
medieval legend of the robber baron
Erazem. Guides are provided for
pre-booked groups.
Standing directly opposite the cave
entrance, the Jamski Dvorec mansion
is an events venue and gastronomy
centre. Incentive events organised by
agreement!
