life-long endeavour. Increasingly, 

educational providers are 

recognising that students want a 

variety of options and the ability 

to personalise the path of formal 

and informal education over the 

course of their lives and 

throughout their careers. While 

the linear progression from 

school to tertiary study and into 

the workforce remains a popular 

choice for some, this straightforward pathway may take a 

number of twists and turns over the course of the journey. 

Students are becoming ever-more sophisticated in their 

expectations of the post-school educational experience and are 

understandably demanding choices that will achieve a tailored 

outcome. The need to gain post-school qualifications is 

imperative in a rapidly evolving and globalised world. The ability 

to diversify and build on an initial qualification is becoming 

increasingly important to future success in the workforce. 

At Box Hill Institute, we pride ourselves on providing a variety 

of opportunities for students to excel academically and to 

gain valuable personal skills and professional experiences in 

their chosen field of study and beyond. Going from TAFE into 

university is now an established pathway for many. This option 

allows students to build on the ‘hands-on’ experience of a 

TAFE education with the academic knowledge gained through a 

university education. Both of these skills – the practical and the 

theoretical – are highly valued by employers of all sectors and 

equip graduates to be adaptable, dynamic professionals and 

critical and engaged thinkers. 

Box Hill Institute has shared a close relationship with Deakin 

University for many years. This partnership is well established 

and diverse in its reach. Among a number of significant 

and ongoing collaborative projects that the two institutions 

have developed over the years, strong and practical pathway 

opportunities for students have been central. As a result, a 

number of clear and guaranteed pathways from our diploma 

and advanced diploma qualifications into a wide range of 

bachelor degrees at Deakin have been developed. We look 

forward to continuing to support students to progress along 

these pathways into Deakin University as many have done 

successfully before them.

Deakin University has a long-standing relationship 

with Victorian Technical and Further Education 

(TAFE) institutes and other VET providers. 

This provides special pathway programs and credit 

arrangements to enable you to transfer from TAFE 

to Deakin. In fact about 40 percent of Deakin’s 

commencing undergraduate students come 

from backgrounds other than secondary school, 

including TAFE and the workforce. 

We have a special, formal relationship with 

Box Hill Institute. This relationship has existed 

for many years and has enabled many students to 

follow a pathway that enables them to successfully 

complete TAFE and University qualifications. I 

encourage you to explore these pathways. 

Students tell us that Deakin’s supportive staff and 

friendly environment make it a great place to meet

atmosphere also ensures that we continue to 

treat our students as individuals with freedom of

Multiple course entry and exit points, deferment, 

and full-time and part-time study all allow you 

the flexibility to structure your study to suit

commitments. We also use innovative technology 

to deliver our courses including online resources 

like podcasts and MP3s.

A one-year full-time study load for a Deakin undergraduate 

course is usually eight credit points (4 points per semester). 

A standard three year degree is usually 24 credit points in 

total.

Chris’ journey 

Chris wanted to become a better writer and the practical approach offered in the 

Professional Writing and Editing course at Box Hill Institute seemed 

like the best way of developing his skills and furthering 

his employment options. 

Highlights during Chris’ time at the Institute 

included writing a feature length screenplay 

and working on the Avant anthology 

in editing and design. 

Chris was originally offered a place in the Bachelor 

of Arts (Professional and Creative Writing) at Deakin 

University but deferred and instead enrolled in the 

Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing because 

he was drawn to the idea of developing his 

skills through practical learning first, rather 

than undertaking theoretical exams and 

study at university. 

The pathway from Box Hill Institute to 

Deakin University then offered Chris 

the opportunity to complete the 

bachelor degree in just two years, 

meaning he will have attained 

two separate qualifications 

in four years. 

When Chris graduates from the 

Bachelor of Arts (Professional and 

Creative Writing) he would like to get 

into film-making. He really enjoyed 

screenwriting at Box Hill Institute 

and Deakin conveniently offer a film 

sub-major in the degree, of which 

he is taking full advantage.
