12Project modelearnerIn 2011, <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> launched an integratedstrategy to improve outcomes for learners bydelivering innovation to <strong>the</strong> Vocational Educationand Training (VET) sector.Focusing on <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Unique to <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, <strong>the</strong> AppliedVocational Study Skills (AVSS) programseeks to increase learner retention, in linewith government policy, through a series<strong>of</strong> interventions for all <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>students.How does it work?Prior to commencing training, all <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong><strong>Institute</strong> students are assessed using <strong>the</strong>Australian Council for Educational Research(ACER) diagnostic tool, called <strong>the</strong> vocationalindicator.This assessment aims to obtain informationon student basic skills in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong>literacy, numeracy and reasoning.Based on <strong>the</strong> information and overallresults <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ACER testing, AVSS teachersare allocated and timetabled to vocationalclasses. AVSS teachers use <strong>the</strong> informationfrom <strong>the</strong> ACER basic skills assessment toplan and deliver a program that provideslearners with support to complete <strong>the</strong>irvocational course.Most importantly, with <strong>the</strong> embeddedintegrated Literacy, Learning and Numeracy(LL&N) program, students work withteachers during class time and have <strong>the</strong>opportunity to meet with <strong>the</strong> LL&N teachersat o<strong>the</strong>r times if <strong>the</strong>y require fur<strong>the</strong>rassistance.What benefits does <strong>the</strong> program <strong>of</strong>fer?The AVSS program improves <strong>the</strong> overallstudent experience. With improved and/orenhanced LL&N skills, students are betterplaced to meet <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irenrolled vocational course.By enhancing learner capacity to applybasic skills to industry tasks, thisprogram increases <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> learnerunderstanding <strong>of</strong> important concepts andideas in many aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir industrycompetencies. GLOBAL FOCUS17<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> continues to build its internationalreputation by launching a number <strong>of</strong> key initiatives.Focusingon international needsVocational Graduate Certificate in Working GloballyIn partnership with Australian <strong>Institute</strong>s (Challenger<strong>Institute</strong>, WA; South West <strong>TAFE</strong>, VIC) and o<strong>the</strong>r Europeancolleges (Adam Smith College, Scotland; Alfa College,The Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands; Silkeborg Technical School, Denmark),<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> has developed <strong>the</strong> Vocational GraduateCertificate <strong>of</strong> Working Globally.Part <strong>of</strong> an Education Cooperation Project jointlyfounded by <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education, Employmentand Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and <strong>the</strong> EuropeanCommission. Learners complete two units <strong>of</strong> study at <strong>Box</strong><strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> and ano<strong>the</strong>r two units at partner institutes ino<strong>the</strong>r countries in order to gain a global perspective.The qualification is set to reinforce <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’sglobal education position as learners undertake projectsin areas <strong>of</strong> global concern such as management <strong>of</strong>people for innovation, environmental sustainability andcommunication.<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Singapore (BHIS)<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> was also <strong>the</strong> first <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> appointedby <strong>the</strong> Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA)as a Continuing Education Training Provider (CET) inSingapore delivering training to local workers in <strong>the</strong>Community and Social Services (CSS) sector.As WDA’s flagship CET provider in <strong>the</strong> CSS sector, <strong>Box</strong><strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Singapore (BHIS) has dedicated its efforts toinspiring learners and providing leadership and specialisteducation and training in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong>:• CSS• Developing and up-skilling workers• Raising industry standards• Creating a talented pool <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to support<strong>the</strong> needs and growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industry• Advancing <strong>the</strong> industry with innovative programsand outstanding graduates.In 2011, BHIS successfully registered with <strong>the</strong> Council forPrivate Education (CPE) as a Private Education Institution(PEI) to continue its operations in Singapore and was alsore-appointed by WDA as its proud CET program partner.for ano<strong>the</strong>r two years.Australian-Pacific Technical College (APTC)Following on from <strong>the</strong> APTC’s success during Stage I,<strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, as part <strong>of</strong> a consortium, was <strong>the</strong> successfulbidder for Stage II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contract. Paul tried his hand as a cheesemaker and even as a fire fighter beforevisiting <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s Open Day. Thisvisit lead Paul to learn more about designstudy options which would satisfy his hungerto learn more about technical design <strong>the</strong>ory.“If you work out what your goals are andyou are passionate and committed, youcan succeed” said Paul. In 2011, Paul wascommissioned to produce two large muralsfor <strong>the</strong> Healesville Music Festival and alsoheld his first solo exhibition at <strong>the</strong> Gilded Lilyin Healesville.He also found time to run a series <strong>of</strong>art workshops in Central Australia forindigenous youth with Traditional HealthCare,a not for pr<strong>of</strong>it organisation.“<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> provided a great start tomy career. The course gave me <strong>the</strong> relevanttechnical skills and knowledge required toget into <strong>the</strong> industry at a leading advertisingagency,” Paul said.Benefiting from <strong>the</strong> various work placementshe did during <strong>the</strong> course, Paul said, “Theteachers encouraged us to get out inindustry, to get some ‘real’ experience.
