Summer Innovations and
Renovations
A
s usual, this summer
provided numerous
occasions to renovate
Chaminade’s physical
plant. One of the strengths of
the school is its ability to stay
young, despite being in existence
for more than 78 years. The only
way that can happen, of course, is
by paying attention to those parts
of the school that need some care.
The summer is a perfect time
for such work. Thus, at the end
of June until the end of August,
numerous Brothers and students
worked together on the following
projects:
Painting: under the
leadership of Bro. Stephen
Balletta ’74, Bro. Lawrence
Syriac and Fr. Ernest Lorfanfant
’55, 12 students scraped and
painted school staircases, outdoor
banisters, sections of the driveway
fence, several classrooms, and the
Brothers’ House lounge.
Carpets: Bro. Joseph Bellizzi ’78 directed his crew of graduates and
students as they laid more than 12,600 square feet of new carpet. The
Mineola Mayor Jack Martins
’85, addressed the Freshman
Social Studies Club in a
packed Hearst Auditorium on
September 25, 2008. A former
member of the club himself,
Jack is shown at right with
Bro. Lawrence Syriac, CHS
Social Studies Department
chairman. He talked about
his time at Chaminade, his
career, and particularly of the
responsibilities and challenges
of serving as the executive
of a village like Mineola.
Afterwards he entertained
questions posed by the
students.
Meribah during the summer and blessed
the passion of Jesus for generations of
Chaminade students.
On Tuesday, August 5, 2008, the Alumni
Association’s Washington/Baltimore
Chapter sponsored a wreath-laying
ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery
in honor of the three CHS alumni who
lost their lives in Iraq: Ron Winchester
’97, Mike LiCalzi ’00, and Jim Regan
Carpentry: Fr. Garrett Long ’62,
together with Bro. Karl Hornberger
’77, Bro. Robert Lahey ’65, and
Bro. George Zehnle worked with 10
student carpenters to resurface nearly
40 original classroom doors on the
bottom floor. The work included
taking the door knobs and locks off
the doors, planing and sanding them,
gluing an oak veneer on the “new”
doors, routing, sanding, staining, and
rehanging them—an arduous process.
In addition, the carpenters renovated
a number of offices, manufacturing
numerous pieces of furniture in the
process.
Air-conditioning: heating and
air-conditioning units were installed
in the library and Band room—a
Meribah Retreat House: A crew led by Bro. Benjamin Knapp ’93,
Bro. Patrick Sarsfield ’86, and Bro. Peter Heiskell ’86 added an outdoor
Stations of the Cross from the Blessed Mother statue, to the Cross, and
toward the St. Benedict statue. Running nearly 400 feet, the pebble
path is marked by rocks, the weight of which was more than 30 tons! In
addition, the paneling in the recreation area downstairs, was removed and
replaced, giving the area a much-needed, new look.
Cleaning: finally, the cleaning crew under Mr. Jose Villota thoroughly
took care of the facilities, cleaning all the chairs and tables in the cafeteria,
shampooing all classroom carpets, and waxing the laboratory floors.
By the time the students arrived for their orientation, the physical
plant was once again ready for classes. (See other photos on page 2.)
On Saturday, September 6th, the Marianists
of the Province of Meribah celebrated the
anniversary of profession of two of its members:
Bro. Lawrence Syriac and Bro. Thomas Cleary
’81. Beginning with Mass at Chaminade
High School and continuing with a meal at
Kellenberg Memorial High School, the province
rejoiced at the witness that the two jubilarians
gave over the past years.
Bro. Lawrence Syriac celebrated the
Golden Anniversary of his First Profession of
vows. On September 8, 1958, Bro. Lawrence
made his first profession at the Marianist
Novitiate at Marcy, NY. After studying at the
University of Dayton, Bro. Lawrence has taught
at several Marianist schools for the past 37 years.
Beginning at St. James High School in Chester,
PA, Brother traveled to Chaminade, Mineola
for a two-year stint. He then taught at Colegio
San Jose in San Juan, Puerto Rico before
returning to Chaminade in 1968. He has
taught at Chaminade ever since, primarily as a
social studies teacher, chairing the Social Studies
Department. Bro. Lawrence has kept busy after
school, running the Hiking Club, the Social
Studies Club, the Catholic League and Sodality,
in addition to numerous other activities. A
popular teacher who loves his students, Bro.
Lawrence remarked that his anniversary is a
celebration of “a blessed, fantastic 50 years, filled
with wonderful and supportive people.”
Bro. Thomas Cleary celebrated his Silver
Jubilee, marking 25 years of devoted service as
a Marianist. After graduating from Chaminade
High School Bro. Thomas spent his year of
novitiate in the Marianist Community of
Chaminade, professing First Vows on August
15, 1983. He spent 23 years as a teacher of
English and religion at Chaminade and has
been Dean of Students for the past 18 years (the
longest tenure of any Dean). In 2002, Bro.
Thomas was named director of the Marianist
Community, and this summer he was named
Provincial of the Meribah Province. As he
celebrates his Silver Jubilee, Bro. Thomas
states, “I consider myself extremely blessed in
my vocation as a Marianist, to follow in the
footsteps of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade
in the Province of Meribah. My vocation has
truly been a blessing.”
The entire Province of Meribah and the
communities at Chaminade High School and
with our two Brothers and hope that their
commitment will bring other vocations to the
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Chaminade Family,
“Take Lord, receive, all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding, my
entire will, all that I have and possess.
You have given all to me, to you, Lord,
I return it” -- St. Ignatius of Loyola
The generosity of our student body
never ceases to make me pause and
offer a prayer of gratitude. From
large collections of canned food
for the needy to simply lending a
hand to a teacher carrying a box
to a classroom, they respond with
generosity and enthusiasm. Why is
F. James Williams, S.M. ’87
this so important? It is an indication
to me that they are living one of
the fundamental tenets of the Gospel, “to whom much is given, much
is expected” (Luke 12:48). Put more particularly, since our students are
talented, they need to realize that their gifts are meant to be used to serve
others. The words from St. Ignatius quoted above underline this point:
our talents are gifts from God intended by the giver to be utilized for
godly purposes.
And they are talented. They come from 168 towns or villages from
Manhattan to Montauk representing 147 parishes and 181 different
schools. The average SAT verbal 630 and math 650 place them well
above the national average. 100% of the Class of 2008 chose to continue
their education at various colleges, universities or service academies. In
athletic competition, Chaminade teams consistently face other opponents
in championship games. In non-athletic endeavors, the Flyers are equally
competitive in areas as diverse as Speech and Debate, Envirothon, Chess
Team, Mathletes and Science Olympiad.
One of the challenges that all of you assist with is insuring that each
young man who has the academic ability can afford to attend Chaminade.
Your contributions to the Torch fund reduce tuition and make attending
Chaminade a reality for many of these young men. Without your
support, many could not afford to be here. This is another gift bestowed
on the student body.
All these gifts are from God and are meant to be used to serve others
and not to self-serve. And serve they do. Let me share a few stories
conveyed to me by various moderators and students alike:
1) Math students helping math students – Last spring, a junior was
having a tough time in math. A fellow junior spent many hours tutoring
Sodality 2008
Opening Prayer Service
and Sophomore Induction
On September 22, the Sodality of
Our Lady of the Pillar had its opening
prayer service in Darby Auditorium.
Following the exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament, Sodalists processed, with
Fr. Garrett Long ’62 carrying the
monstrance along Jackson Avenue to
the Chapel for Eucharistic Adoration
(pictured above right and below).
Also, on September 29, new Sodality
members were inducted and received
their pins from Brother Peter Heiskell
’86, Director of Apostolic Activities,
after dinner and prayer (at right).
him in math as a part of the students-tutoring-students program. When
final averages were tallied, the junior had passed the course for the year
and attributed his success to the patience of his friend.
2) Hospital Volunteers – One senior volunteered over 50 hours at
Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids. In particular, he put much
enthusiasm into their annual Christmas party.
3) Senior Leaders – During 3C Week, in an attempt to show the
freshmen what will happen if you do not follow the dress code by tucking
in your shirt and looking well dressed, one Senior Leader gave a live
demonstration of being corrected. A teacher not privy to the ruse took
the bait and told the senior to pull his clothing together. The freshman
homeroom enjoyed both the performance as well as the sample of
discipline.
4) Emmaus – Part of serving others includes spending time meeting
the people they are helping. As Emmaus travels to nursing homes and
other locations, students often become friendly with one of the residents
as the location. When they return at a later date, they often seek out
their acquaintance from the previous trip. One instance involves Christa
House which serves the terminally ill poor. At one return visit, a junior
was upset to learn that his friend had passed away.
5) Athletics – After a hard fought game, the freshman team left the field
and headed to the locker room. They were greeted in the tunnel by their
varsity older brothers who cheered and congratulated them on a job well
done.
6) World Youth Day – While participating in World Youth Day in
Sydney, Australia, a group of students noticed a number of homeless. At
the conclusion of one event, there were large amounts of food being given
out for free. The students grabbed some of the bags of food and gave it to
the homeless they met on the way home. This was a wonderful testimony
to seeing a need and an opportunity to address the need.
As I said at the outset, I am daily reminded to pray with gratitude
both for the gifts our men have been given and for the ways they use them
to serve others. In fact, I believe our experiences of prayer together at
school – at Masses, evenings of recollection, and retreats – re-enforce the
lessons of service we seek to instill each day. Our time of prayer reminds
us of the awesome love God has for each of us and the opportunity we
have to express love to God and others by the way we utilize our gifts.
After two years of thinking, discussing, deciding, and planning, Chaminade
institutedthe first annual Alumni Association fall combined reunions celebration
on Saturday, September 27, 2008. Thanks to the diligent efforts of committee
co-chairmen Larry Mahon ’78 (at right) and Craig Tigh ’72 (at left) the
challenging program for the day unfolded itself as though it had been done
for years. With a large tent to protect participants from the mildly inclement
weather, it began with a barbecue on Faerber Field that fed some 500 alumni,
their families, Pep Band members, alumni volunteer workers, and student
volunteer workers. After the barbecue the Flyers Varsity Football Team played
Stepinac High School on Ott Field, following a coin toss by the senior alumni
present from the Class of 1943. A Liturgy which welcomed any members of
the Chaminade Family was then celebrated in Darby Auditorium, after which
members of the National Honor Society offered tours of the school. The
tours ended at the new Activity-Athletic Center just in time for cocktails and
dinner. Some 500 members of the Classes of 1943, 1948, 1953, 1963, 1968,
1973, 1978, 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2003 took part. Special thanks are due to
members of the Chaminade Emmaus Volunteers, String Orchestra, Freshman
and JV Soccer Teams, Crew Team, and Volleyball Team. The many helping
hands that they generously provided quickly and easily completed a job that
would otherwise have been very difficult and burdensome.
At right, Soccer Team
members enjoy a well-earned
barbeque break. Both they
(after the barbeque) and the
other volunteering teams and
clubs (after dinner) enabled
committee members to
complete the clean-up process
for both meals in record
time. Directly to the right is
owadays it doesn’t take more than a stop at a local gas
station to remind ourselves that we are in period of
economic challenge. Prices for just about everything
keep going up, while the stock market continues a
roller coaster ride that we all hope will soon level off favorably. We
hear all too often of bank failures, mortgage foreclosures and one
economic difficulty after another. And again and again I am asked
the question, “How is the Torch Fund doing in all of this?”
It is my great pleasure to be able to report that, against all odds,
the Torch Fund has just finished another record-breaking year.
Although our goal for the year was $1.00 more than last year, we
actually ended Torch 2008 more than $50,000 ahead of last year,
with a grand total of over $2.6 million. Not only is it the highest
that Torch has ever reached, but it also had the largest number
of donors ever, a total of almost 6,100. So we are once again
truly indebted to the members of the Chaminade Family whose
generosity has made this success possible.
At the same time that the Torch Fund was in process, we
continued to promote our capital campaign for the elimination of
the debt on our new Activity-Athletic Center. As of this writing,
we have received pledges and gifts totaling $16.5 million toward
out goal of $20 million. If you have not as yet participated in this
campaign we encourage you to give it careful consideration.
The July issue of the Chaminade News also reported on our
efforts to investigate various methods of gift planning that can be
of benefit to our donors as well as to Chaminade. In this regard we
have recently launched a new and expanded segment of our web site
find it at www.chaminade-hs.plannedgifts.org. I invite you to visit
these pages and to familiarize yourself with the creative methods of
giving that they provide. Our Development staff would be happy
to assist you in setting up a program that could be of great mutual
benefit both to you and to Chaminade.
As always, there are many people whose work and efforts
during the past year have combined to make Torch 2008 such a
blessing for Chaminade High School, and I would like to take this
occasion to formally thank them. First are the members of our staff
in the office of alumni and development, particularly our Torch
Fund director, Dr. James Sheehan. Then there are the members of
the Torch Committee under the chairmanship of Lawrence Mahon
’78. They were determined to do all that they could to insure that
we would be proud of Torch 2008 and their efforts were not in
vain. (For the coming two years Larry Mahon will be succeeded
by Alumni Association past Vice-president Ed Smith ’89.) The
third group is the Golf & Tennis Open Committee, directed by
Bill Basel ’58, Jack Lenz ’43, Kevin Parente ’82 and chaired by
Chris McKenna ’82 and Tom Healy ’91; once again they created
an event that was the envy of many a college. Finally, the Alumni
Board under President John Westerman ’75 offered a great variety
of activities that brought increasing numbers of alumni back to the
school.
To them and to all those who so generously contributed to
Chaminade during the past year we say most sincerely, thank you
very much!
