Graduation – a Family Affair!
hen Bob O’Brien attended his Chaminade graduation back in
W
1979, he listened attentively as valedictorian Jim Mercadante
and salutatorian Tom McDonagh spoke of the four years of
high school that had just passed and the many years that lay
ahead.
Twenty-seven years later, Bob listened even more closely as the graduation
speakers addressed their classmates, and for good reason. His son Luke,
an Amherst-bound straight-A student known for his blistering play on the
lacrosse field and his blistering wit in his Tarmac articles, had been chosen as
class salutatorian.
True to form, Luke
entertained his classmates with a
humorous retrospective of their
four years at Chaminade, which
he likened to “a roller-coater ride:
fast-paced, full of ups and
downs, twists and turns, and
ultimately finishing off right
where it started.” Among the
highlights, according to Luke,
was the annual freshman dance.
“Surrounded by rumors of a six-
to-one girl-to-guy ratio . . . [it]
is, to this date, the only school
event that has seen onehundred-percent
attendance
from our class.” Luke also
recalled “the addition of art into
our schedule,” which “taught us
three things: who had artistic
talent; who had siblings,
parents, or a girlfriend who had
artistic talent; and who had
neither.”
Family connections at the
June 4 th Graduation Exercises did not end with Bob O’Brien and his son
Luke, however. Chris Sheeron ’03 was in the audience to hear the announcement
that his younger brother Corey had been selected as the
Chaminade Man of the Year for the Class of 2006. Yearbook editor,
member of the Speech and Debate Team, Parish Religious Education
teacher, generous volunteer at innumerable school and community functions,
and an outstanding student as well, Corey heads off to the United
States Naval Academy at Annapolis this summer.
Rapid progress has continued on the construction of Chaminade’s new Activity-
Athletic Center. During June and early July, concrete floors were poured on the
upper mezzanine level, the wrestling room, the gymnasium, and the basement. At
left above, masons work on the east wall of the wrestling room. The center photo
above is looking across the new gym, while the photo at right above was taken in
the future lobby. The Chaminade Family eagerly looks forward to the completion
of construction in a little over a year.
At right, CHS president
Fr. James Williams ’87
presents the Chaminade
Man of the Year Award
to Corey Sheeron ’06 to
the applause of his classmates.
The photos at
left are salutatorian Luke
O’Brien ’06 (upper
photo) and valedictorian
Michael Milone ’06.
The list of family ties went even further. Jeff Martin ’71 was present to
see his son Kevin win the Joseph F. Thomas Student –Athlete Award. Brian
Allen, the recipient of the Bro. Joseph C. Fox Service Award, is the nephew
of Robert Allen ’57 and the cousin of Chris Allen ’90 and Jon Allen ’92.
And in perhaps the most poignant moment of the day, Robert James Frawley
III, grandson of Robert Sr. ’39, received the Fr. Philip Eichner, S.M. Award,
given to the second most outstanding senior in the graduating class. Robert
Sr. passed away that day and must have been smiling down from heaven as
his grandson received his award from CHS principal Bro. Joseph Bellizzi ’78.
In all, twenty members of the Class of 2006 have fathers who graduated
from Chaminade, and several others are grandsons of CHS alumni (see page
6). But whether they were following in the footsteps of grandfathers,
fathers, and older brothers or blazing a trail of their own, every one of the
390 graduates of the Class of 2006 had much to be proud of. All were
accepted into college, and 259 of them received one or more scholarships or
merit-based grants. The total number of scholarships won by this class was
754.
As valedictorian Michael Milone reminded his fellow graduates,
however, “Success is not so much what we have as it is who we are. To be
successful, we must hold on to our values. We must not fall victim to the
temptation of selfishness and greed. We must continue to live as Christians,
regardless of where our careers may take us.”
For instilling those values, Michael thanked not only Chaminade, but
all the families of the graduates as well. “Moms, dads, grandmas, and
grandpas – thank you so much. We could not be up here if it weren’t for all
of you. And not only have you gotten us here, but you are also our role
models for the future. . . . Because of you, we know that we too can make the
right choices. We know that we too can choose to put others first in our
lives.”
Yes, for everyone involved, Graduation Day 2006 was truly a family
affair. ❑
A group of 85 students and seven faculty
members journeyed to Italy during the Easter
recess, from April 11 - 22, 2006. Their trip
included visits to Vatican City and Rome
(with a stop at the Marianist General
Administration, hosted by Bro. Michael
Junior and Senior
Celebrations
Last November, the various media
were very timely, efficient, and largely
supportive in their publicizing of
Chaminade’s decision to cancel the Junior
and Senior Proms. When the alternative
events were announced and then actually
occurred, none of them followed up on
the story. So the Chaminade News gets
the exclusive!
On the evening of Friday, May 5, 2006,
members of the Senior Class took part in a Senior
Celebration Cruise, a four-hour dinner- cruise
around lower Manhattan. After being dropped
off at Chaminade by their parents, seniors, their
dates, and faculty members traveled by coach
buses to the pier at East 23rd St., where they
boarded the Cloud Nine IV. On board, they
enjoyed refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, a
delicious buffet dinner, and dancing, all with the
beautiful view of lower Manhattan as their
backdrop. Afterwards, they returned to
Chaminade, where they were again met by their
parents. To add an aspect of community giving
to this event, each senior brought an item
appropriate for donation to the Sisters of Life
House for Unwed Mothers. (The photos on the
left half of this display highlight that event.)
Members of the Junior Class chose a very
different event for their alternative, namely a class
trip to Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park on
Wednesday, May 24, 2006. With 345 juniors
taking part, it included the majority of the class.
After homeroom that morning, students and
faculty moderators boarded coach buses for the
trip to New Jersey. After spending the day
enjoying one thrill ride after another, they came
together for a class dinner in the park, and then
returned to Chaminade, where they celebrated
the Mass of the Ascension at 11:00 p.m. (The
following day was Ascension Thursday.) The trip
was the beginning of a six-day weekend for the
juniors, since the following Monday was Memorial
Day. (The trip is highlighted in the photos
on the right side of this display.)
McAward ’76), Florence, Assisi, San
Giovanni Rotundo, Monte Cassino,
Naples, and the Isle of Capri. On Holy
Thursday, they had the privilege of
attending the Chrism Mass, celebrated by
his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. The
photo at left above was taken during that
Mass. In the evening on Good Friday,
the group participated in the candlelight
service of Stations of the Cross at the
Colosseum (see photo at left.)
Pictured from l.-r. at the top with two newfound
friends are Rob Stanton, Lorenzo Posadas, Tom
Wilhelm, Brian Pfail, and Jim McDonald. Marty
Meehan (l.) and Doug Witzenbocker are at left
Mike Manasia, Tom Wilhelm, and Jim McDonald.
dinner. In the photo at the bottom are Steve
Principal’s Graduation Address
Graduates of the Class of 2006,
“What you are is God’s gift to you.
What you make of yourself is your gift
to God.”
That quote is on a plaque in my
room and serves as a constant reminder
for me. I offer you those words as the
basis of my reflections today.
St. Paul says, “We hold a treasure in
earthen vessels.” God has given each of
us gifts and talents – we call that grace.
For the past four years, you have been
discovering the treasure of God’s grace
Bro. Joseph Bellizzi, S.M. ’78
within you: your intellectual, physical,
athletic and spiritual gifts. And in so
many ways you have also shared these gifts for the welfare of others.
Whether in the classroom or on the field, in the newspaper or yearbook office
or on a visit to the elderly, in the chapel or on the court, in a C.C.D. class or a
prayer service, as a senior leader or as an Apostle, at an Emmaus project or at a
concert, you have shared these gifts and talents. All of these talents are God’s
gifts to us. What we make of them, how we use them — what we make of
ourselves — is our gift to God.
This world desperately needs the witness of your lives. This world
needs you to share your talents and gifts to transform this world into the
Kingdom of God. What are the treasures that you have to offer this world?
What are the talents and gifts that God has given you to use for the good of
this world? You have been given much, and now much is required of you.
Jesus says, “To whom more has been given, more will be required.” Your
class has an incredible gift of life, an incredible joie de vivre, an incredible
sense of love and affection. Never lose that gift, always give that gift.
St. Paul writes to the Corinthians, “God will always make you rich
enough to be generous at all times, so that many will thank God for your
gifts….For this service you perform not only meets the needs of God’s
people, but also produces an outpouring of gratitude to God. Let us thank
God for his priceless gift!” Be generous, for God has indeed given each of
you so much. When you share your gift, it is an expression of gratitude to
God and an expression of who you are – your gift to God.
And so, my dear young men, Chaminade men, my thoughts and
prayers for you are simple. What you are is God’s gift to you. What you
make of yourself is your gift to God. As sons of Mary, look to her for
example and for hope. She, who so graciously gave of Herself, who so
willingly surrendered Herself for the salvation of mankind, stands before you
today and always as the perfect gift to God. Through her intercession, “Let
us thank God for his priceless gift.”
Good luck and God bless.
A Southern Thank-you
In early April, Bro. Martin High
School in New Orleans sent a
delegation to say “thank-y’all” for
providing 650 backpacks and school
supplies in September, and new
cafeteria tables and chairs during the
winter. Principal Gene Tullier and
his wife Adrienne, along with four
students, expressed the gratitude of
their school community at a student
body assembly on April 5, 2006.
