Against all Odds

owadays it doesn’t take more than a stop at a local gas
station to remind ourselves that we are in period of
economic challenge. Prices for just about everything
keep going up, while the stock market continues a
roller coaster ride that we all hope will soon level off favorably. We
hear all too often of bank failures, mortgage foreclosures and one
economic difficulty after another. And again and again I am asked
the question, “How is the Torch Fund doing in all of this?”
It is my great pleasure to be able to report that, against all odds,
the Torch Fund has just finished another record-breaking year.
Although our goal for the year was $1.00 more than last year, we
actually ended Torch 2008 more than $50,000 ahead of last year,
with a grand total of over $2.6 million. Not only is it the highest
that Torch has ever reached, but it also had the largest number
of donors ever, a total of almost 6,100. So we are once again
truly indebted to the members of the Chaminade Family whose
generosity has made this success possible.
At the same time that the Torch Fund was in process, we
continued to promote our capital campaign for the elimination of
the debt on our new Activity-Athletic Center. As of this writing,
we have received pledges and gifts totaling $16.5 million toward
out goal of $20 million. If you have not as yet participated in this
campaign we encourage you to give it careful consideration.
The July issue of the Chaminade News also reported on our
efforts to investigate various methods of gift planning that can be
of benefit to our donors as well as to Chaminade. In this regard we
have recently launched a new and expanded segment of our web site

giving that they provide. Our Development staff would be happy
to assist you in setting up a program that could be of great mutual
benefit both to you and to Chaminade.
As always, there are many people whose work and efforts
during the past year have combined to make Torch 2008 such a
blessing for Chaminade High School, and I would like to take this
occasion to formally thank them. First are the members of our staff
in the office of alumni and development, particularly our Torch
Fund director, Dr. James Sheehan. Then there are the members of
the Torch Committee under the chairmanship of Lawrence Mahon
’78. They were determined to do all that they could to insure that
we would be proud of Torch 2008 and their efforts were not in
vain. (For the coming two years Larry Mahon will be succeeded
by Alumni Association past Vice-president Ed Smith ’89.) The
third group is the Golf & Tennis Open Committee, directed by
Bill Basel ’58, Jack Lenz ’43, Kevin Parente ’82 and chaired by
Chris McKenna ’82 and Tom Healy ’91; once again they created
an event that was the envy of many a college. Finally, the Alumni
Board under President John Westerman ’75 offered a great variety
of activities that brought increasing numbers of alumni back to the
school.
To them and to all those who so generously contributed to
Chaminade during the past year we say most sincerely, thank you
