greetings<br />

As we complete the first year <strong>of</strong> the new and improved Continuing and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong>, we embark upon<br />

the new year with anticipation and excitement. Vital and valuable<br />

feedback from our students, faculty, staff, and community, help us<br />

continue to tweak and refine our course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

We continue to partner with CCNY departments, <strong>The</strong> Greater Harlem Chamber <strong>of</strong><br />

Commerce, public schools and corporations to create the best training programs for<br />

you! We have short-term job training programs such as Certified Nursing Assistant,<br />

Security Guard, Pharmacy Technician and Health Care Interpreter. As a new course<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering - we will prepare you to take the NYS Notary Public examination and many other<br />

examinations. AARP remains a viable onsite partner utilizing our lab to help with your job<br />

search. Financial expert Ryan Mack is on board to help you “Manage Your Money.” You<br />

can even learn “How to Develop Your Business in 60 Days.” Upcoming semesters feature<br />

Dr. Jeff Gardere, “America’s Psychologist”; the talented and gifted screenwriter, producer<br />

and actress Lonette McKee; and, public speaker and Audelco Award winner Florene<br />

“Flo” Wiley, to name a few.<br />

We remain committed to health and wellness as we <strong>of</strong>fer Healthy, Tasty Menus, Zumba®<br />

and our first Healthy Living Expo, scheduled for April 28, 2012. You will be able to sample<br />

new wellness programs and learn how to sustain good health for you and your family.<br />

DISCOUNTS<br />

Senior citizens receive a discount <strong>of</strong> $25 <strong>of</strong>f the price<br />

<strong>of</strong> any course $99 or more (except computer courses).<br />

CCNY faculty, staff, and students receive a 10% discount<br />

on courses (exclusions may apply). Discounts cannot be<br />

combined with other <strong>of</strong>fers.<br />

REFUND POLICY<br />

Refund requests must be submitted in writing (via fax, email,<br />

or in person) 10 business days prior to the first day <strong>of</strong><br />

class. If CPS cancels a course a 100% refund, including the<br />

registration fee, will be given. If the student withdraws at<br />

least 10 business days prior to the first day <strong>of</strong> class a 100%<br />

refund will be given (less the $25 registration fee). No<br />

refund will be given after the first class session. <strong>The</strong>re are no<br />

refunds on one- or two-day workshops. Credit card refunds<br />

are credited to the card used to register. Money order and<br />

business check payments are refunded via a check mailed<br />

four weeks after a course withdrawal or cancellation.<br />

Our Certificate Programs can be taken for personal enrichment or as part <strong>of</strong> a Certificate Program requirement. In order to<br />

receive a certificate, students must meet the following basic requirements: (a) at least 80% attendance (b) pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> having<br />

attained minimum competency in each course (c) completion <strong>of</strong> all required courses in the certificate program.<br />

Students will be given letters <strong>of</strong> attendance if they attend at least 80% <strong>of</strong> a course that is 10 hours or longer. Successful<br />

Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor<br />

Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED<br />

This certificate program provides the 350 hours <strong>of</strong> instruction required by <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State and is designed to be<br />

completed in 3 semesters. <strong>The</strong> program has been approved by OASAS (the Office <strong>of</strong> Alcohol and Substance<br />

Abuse Services). Our CASAC certificate program is for people who want to become alcohol and drug prevention<br />

specialists or substance abuse counselors in schools, treatment facilities, or social service agencies. Classes are divided into<br />

four sections:<br />

1. 85 hours related to learning about alcoholism and<br />

substance abuse<br />

2.150 hours related to alcoholism/substance<br />

abuse counseling<br />

3. 70 hours related to assessment, clinical evaluations,<br />

treatment planning, case management, educating the<br />

client’s family about alcoholism and/or substance<br />

abuse and community education/awareness<br />

4. 45 hours related to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional and ethical<br />

responsibilities <strong>of</strong> a counselor<br />

Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the program students will have met the NYS<br />

Counseling the Chemically<br />

Dependent, Part II (Group)<br />

Group counseling is thought by many to be the most<br />

effective and efficient mode <strong>of</strong> counseling. It is also<br />

the most difficult form <strong>of</strong> counseling for the facilitator.<br />

This course will review the necessary components<br />

<strong>of</strong> all therapeutic groups with emphasis on group<br />

cohesion, “here and now” orientation, and process<br />

Many therapy pr<strong>of</strong>essionals consider addiction to<br />

be a “family disease” because <strong>of</strong> the impact and<br />

transformative power <strong>of</strong> addiction on the entire<br />

family. <strong>The</strong> course will focus on the theories <strong>of</strong> the<br />

three pioneers in the field <strong>of</strong> family counseling for the<br />

chemically dependent: Satir, Bowens, and Minuchin.<br />

<strong>The</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> the course is to develop a unified approach to<br />

family counseling.<br />

addiction and will then review both internal and external<br />

factors that may cause a relapse. Four models <strong>of</strong> relapse<br />

prevention in a treatment setting will be examined:<br />

1) 12 Step Programs; 2) Rational-Emotive therapy;<br />

3) Cognitive Behavioral therapy; and 4) Cenaps (T. Gorski)<br />

This theoretical foundation will then be put into practice<br />

through role-playing in the classroom.<br />

This class is essential for understanding and treating<br />

people who suffer from both mental illness and alcoholism.<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> these disorders cannot be overemphasized.<br />

<strong>CUNY</strong> Health Care Interpreter certificate Program (English/Spanish)<br />

PrerequisiteS for the Certificate: Students must pass an entrance test for bilingual fluency (English and Spanish);<br />

High School diploma or GED; Basic computer skills and access to the Internet.<br />

This certificate program prepares you to work as a health care interpreter on a full-time, part-time or freelance basis in<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> medical facilities. This course incorporates materials used by Culture Smart, an organization specializing in<br />

medical interpreter training, and prepares you for the Language Line Interpreter Skills Test.<br />

Career Opportunities<br />

Recent NYC legislation requires Health Care Interpreters to have 45 hours <strong>of</strong> formal training. As more people earn<br />

these credentials, the competition will soon make it necessary for Health Care Interpreters to have college degrees, as<br />

well as training, to successfully compete for jobs. Currently there is work available for Health Care Interpreters on a<br />

full-time, part-time, or freelance basis, in a hospital setting, a physician’s <strong>of</strong>fice, a health care facility, or related medical<br />

organization. Salaries range from $33,000 to $40,000 a year.<br />

Lonette McKee’s Actor’s Workshop<br />

This ten-week course will cover character exploration and development, in-depth scene<br />

study and development, backstage and onstage etiquette, the differences between<br />

acting techniques for film, television and stage and the do’s and don’ts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

industry, and how to break into the fiercely competitive pr<strong>of</strong>essional entertainment<br />

industry. Students will also get the basics <strong>of</strong> mounting a production as they<br />

prepare an “Evening <strong>of</strong> Scenes” which will be showcased in a small pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

performance with an invited audience at the end <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

This course will be taught by producer, director, screenwriter, composer, actress, and singer,<br />

Lonette McKee. Some <strong>of</strong> Ms. McKee’s film credits include; Learning Uncle Vincent, Honey and Honey 2; <strong>The</strong> Cotton Club<br />

and Gardens <strong>of</strong> Stone; Lift, for which she earned a Black Reel nomination. Other films include Men <strong>of</strong> Honor, Round Midnight,<br />

Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, He Got Game and She Hate Me. Television mini-series and films include Having Our Say, Queen<br />

and Women <strong>of</strong> Brewster Place, for which she received an NAACP nomination. Lonette also received a NAACP nomination<br />

for her appearances on the long-running CBS soap opera As the World Turns. McKee had a recurring role on the NBC drama<br />

Third Watch. She is producing her first feature film Dream Street, which she wrote and will direct.<br />

Housed in a new state <strong>of</strong> the art facility, the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School <strong>of</strong><br />

Architecture is seeking applicants for its pre-college and college level Architecture Career Lab.<br />
