greetings 

As we complete the first year of the new and improved Continuing and 

Professional Studies of The City College of New York, we embark upon 

the new year with anticipation and excitement. Vital and valuable 

feedback from our students, faculty, staff, and community, help us 

continue to tweak and refine our course offerings. 

We continue to partner with CCNY departments, The Greater Harlem Chamber of 

Commerce, public schools and corporations to create the best training programs for 

you! We have short-term job training programs such as Certified Nursing Assistant, 

Security Guard, Pharmacy Technician and Health Care Interpreter. As a new course 

offering - we will prepare you to take the NYS Notary Public examination and many other 

examinations. AARP remains a viable onsite partner utilizing our lab to help with your job 

search. Financial expert Ryan Mack is on board to help you “Manage Your Money.” You 

can even learn “How to Develop Your Business in 60 Days.” Upcoming semesters feature 

Dr. Jeff Gardere, “America’s Psychologist”; the talented and gifted screenwriter, producer 

and actress Lonette McKee; and, public speaker and Audelco Award winner Florene 

“Flo” Wiley, to name a few. 

We remain committed to health and wellness as we offer Healthy, Tasty Menus, Zumba® 

and our first Healthy Living Expo, scheduled for April 28, 2012. You will be able to sample 

new wellness programs and learn how to sustain good health for you and your family.

DISCOUNTS 

Senior citizens receive a discount of $25 off the price 

of any course $99 or more (except computer courses). 

CCNY faculty, staff, and students receive a 10% discount 

on courses (exclusions may apply). Discounts cannot be 

combined with other offers. 

REFUND POLICY 

Refund requests must be submitted in writing (via fax, email, 

or in person) 10 business days prior to the first day of 

class. If CPS cancels a course a 100% refund, including the 

registration fee, will be given. If the student withdraws at 

least 10 business days prior to the first day of class a 100% 

refund will be given (less the $25 registration fee). No 

refund will be given after the first class session. There are no 

refunds on one- or two-day workshops. Credit card refunds 

are credited to the card used to register. Money order and 

business check payments are refunded via a check mailed 

four weeks after a course withdrawal or cancellation.

I.T.G’s are accepted as payment for approved

Our Certificate Programs can be taken for personal enrichment or as part of a Certificate Program requirement. In order to 

receive a certificate, students must meet the following basic requirements: (a) at least 80% attendance (b) proof of having 

attained minimum competency in each course (c) completion of all required courses in the certificate program. 

Students will be given letters of attendance if they attend at least 80% of a course that is 10 hours or longer. Successful

BOOKKEEPING AND ACCOUNTING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 

Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED; basic computer skills 

This certificate program offers all the bookkeeping and accounting training you need to analyze and prepare 

crucial financial records for large and small businesses. Whether you want to start your own business, improve your 

administrative skills, or prepare yourself for a new career in bookkeeping and accounting, this fast-paced certificate 

program will teach you all you need to know to become a professional bookkeeper and accountant. The program can 

be completed in one or two semesters.

CASAC CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 

Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor 

Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED 

This certificate program provides the 350 hours of instruction required by New York State and is designed to be 

completed in 3 semesters. The program has been approved by OASAS (the Office of Alcohol and Substance 

Abuse Services). Our CASAC certificate program is for people who want to become alcohol and drug prevention 

specialists or substance abuse counselors in schools, treatment facilities, or social service agencies. Classes are divided into 

four sections: 

1. 85 hours related to learning about alcoholism and 

substance abuse 

2.150 hours related to alcoholism/substance 

abuse counseling 

3. 70 hours related to assessment, clinical evaluations, 

treatment planning, case management, educating the 

client’s family about alcoholism and/or substance 

abuse and community education/awareness 

4. 45 hours related to the professional and ethical 

responsibilities of a counselor 

Upon completion of the program students will have met the NYS 

requirements to take the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance 

Abuse Counselor examination. 

Counseling the Chemically 

Dependent, Part II (Group) 

Group counseling is thought by many to be the most 

effective and efficient mode of counseling. It is also 

the most difficult form of counseling for the facilitator. 

This course will review the necessary components 

of all therapeutic groups with emphasis on group 

cohesion, “here and now” orientation, and process 

illumination. The role and mindset of the facilitator will 

be discussed.

Part III (Family) 

Many therapy professionals consider addiction to 

be a “family disease” because of the impact and 

transformative power of addiction on the entire 

family. The course will focus on the theories of the 

three pioneers in the field of family counseling for the 

chemically dependent: Satir, Bowens, and Minuchin. 

The goal of the course is to develop a unified approach to 

family counseling.

Relapse Prevention & Special Client 

Populations 

The course will begin with a discussion of the nature of 

addiction and will then review both internal and external 

factors that may cause a relapse. Four models of relapse 

prevention in a treatment setting will be examined: 

1) 12 Step Programs; 2) Rational-Emotive therapy; 

3) Cognitive Behavioral therapy; and 4) Cenaps (T. Gorski) 

This theoretical foundation will then be put into practice 

through role-playing in the classroom.

Physical Aspects of Substance Abuse 

& Alcoholism 

This course examines the physical effects of alcohol and 

drugs on the human body. Students will learn how the 

human body processes drugs and alcohol beginning with 

the administration of the drug and ingestion of alcohol to 

their elimination. 


Assessing & Treating the Dually 

Diagnosed Chemical Abuse Client 

This class is essential for understanding and treating 

people who suffer from both mental illness and alcoholism. 

The importance of concurrent rather than sequential 

treatment of these disorders cannot be overemphasized. 

Professional counselors must be prepared to recognize 

and respond to the unique spectrum of needs of this

Already an LPN, CNA, or other patient care professional? This course can add to your skill set, teaching you the basic 

procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries. For those already employed as phlebotomists, this course

This course will introduce students to the techniques 

necessary to perform a 12–lead resting electrocardiogram

Certification Training 

This test preparation course, created by the National 

Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, prepares 

you to take the ServSafe ® Food Protection Manager 

Certification Examination (FPMC) and the NYC Department 

of Health’s Food Handler’s Test. Once you complete the 

course and pass the exam you will be referred to the NYC 

Health Academy for a 3-hour NYC Health Code Regulations

The Food Service Management Program will focus on enhancing career paths in restaurant and hospitality management 

operations. This Leadership Development program is designed for entry level and mid-level restaurant managers, cooks, chefs, 

and hospitality and hotel managers by providing them with advanced restaurant management training that will propel their 

careers to the next level.

HEALTH CARE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 

CUNY Health Care Interpreter certificate Program (English/Spanish) 

PrerequisiteS for the Certificate: Students must pass an entrance test for bilingual fluency (English and Spanish); 

High School diploma or GED; Basic computer skills and access to the Internet. 

This certificate program prepares you to work as a health care interpreter on a full-time, part-time or freelance basis in 

a variety of medical facilities. This course incorporates materials used by Culture Smart, an organization specializing in 

medical interpreter training, and prepares you for the Language Line Interpreter Skills Test. 

Career Opportunities 

Recent NYC legislation requires Health Care Interpreters to have 45 hours of formal training. As more people earn 

these credentials, the competition will soon make it necessary for Health Care Interpreters to have college degrees, as 

well as training, to successfully compete for jobs. Currently there is work available for Health Care Interpreters on a 

full-time, part-time, or freelance basis, in a hospital setting, a physician’s office, a health care facility, or related medical 

organization. Salaries range from $33,000 to $40,000 a year.

English Health Care Interpreting 

This course provides a basic understanding of the role of 

the interpreter in health care settings. Students learn skills 

and techniques used in consecutive interpreting, such as 

managing the flow of communication; recognizing and 

dealing with ethical issues and conflicts; active listening; 

memory-building and recall; and checking for accuracy. 

Topics covered include the culture of American health 

care; roles and expectations of clinicians; and health 

beliefs and practices in the Spanish-speaking community. 

Role-playing and other exercises will be used to build your 

interpreting skills, your medical vocabulary, and your 

personal bilingual glossary of words and terms frequently 

encountered in health care interpreting.

Medical Terminology, 6th Edition, by Peggy Leonard. This

Lonette McKee’s Actor’s Workshop 

This ten-week course will cover character exploration and development, in-depth scene 

study and development, backstage and onstage etiquette, the differences between 

acting techniques for film, television and stage and the do’s and don’ts of the 

industry, and how to break into the fiercely competitive professional entertainment 

industry. Students will also get the basics of mounting a production as they 

prepare an “Evening of Scenes” which will be showcased in a small professional 

performance with an invited audience at the end of the course. 

This course will be taught by producer, director, screenwriter, composer, actress, and singer, 

Lonette McKee. Some of Ms. McKee’s film credits include; Learning Uncle Vincent, Honey and Honey 2; The Cotton Club 

and Gardens of Stone; Lift, for which she earned a Black Reel nomination. Other films include Men of Honor, Round Midnight, 

Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, He Got Game and She Hate Me. Television mini-series and films include Having Our Say, Queen 

and Women of Brewster Place, for which she received an NAACP nomination. Lonette also received a NAACP nomination 

for her appearances on the long-running CBS soap opera As the World Turns. McKee had a recurring role on the NBC drama 

Third Watch. She is producing her first feature film Dream Street, which she wrote and will direct.

Uniquely positioned as the only public school of architecture in New York City, the SSA 

Architecture Career Lab exposes those considering a career in design to the theory and practice 

of architecture through lectures, workshops, office tours, and design studios taught by our awardwinning 

and internationally recognized faculty. Through an emphasis on hand craft and digital 

fabrication, interdisciplinary research, and ecologically and culturally sustainable practices, the Architecture Summer 

Career Lab encourages a responsible engagement with the practice of architecture, while cultivating rigorous exploration 

of new theories, materials, and technologies. The five-week, SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab provides students with 

the practical experience required to make an informed and meaningful career choice.
