Dr. Wadie Fahim Mankarious (LTTA, Senior Organization/Institutional Development Specialist) is
the coordinator for this Task. STTA is provided by Dr. Mark Svendsen, an expatriate. Activities
carried out during the report period include:
• Drs.Svendsen and Wadie and Andrew Tczap met twice with the USAID COTR and Ms.
Amani Selim, USAID Senior M&E Specialist, to discuss the PMP indicators based on the
comments of the mid- term evaluation team.
• Dr. Abd El Motaleb, MWRI Coordinator, attended a debriefing by Dr. Svendsen. He
supported the M&E activities, and requested that IWRM II draft a letter to be addressed to
all IWMDs asking for support in obtaining requested data. Dr. Motaleb encouraged the
project to continue introducing the concept of managing water resources based on volume
instead of water level.
• The M&E team discussed possible collaboration between IWRM II and CDIAS on M&E
activities related to BCWUAs with Eng. Nagwa El Khashab, Chairperson of CDIAS.
• IWRM II started to collect information on crop area, productivity and farm gate prices in
each district from the MALR Information Center for the summer 2009 and winter
2009/2010 seasons.Work on utilization of the checklist for evaluating IWMD performance
continued.
• An addendum to the project PMP setting out a set of indicators to measure the growing
capacity and performance of BCWUAs and IWMDs was prepared by Dr. Svendsen and
submitted to USAID. These two new indicators are discussed under Tasks 1.1 and 2.2 above.
• A purchase order with EL Zanaty Associates was signed for conducting a field survey of
farmers and for focus group meetings with BCWUA boards. These will cover the IWRM II
area and the two IWRM I-supported directorates in Lower Egypt.
EDUCATION, COMMUNICATIONS, PUBLIC AWARENESS AND
PARTICIPATION
Cheryl Groff, Senior Communication Specialist, was coordinator for this task and was
demobilized on 30 June 2011. The project works in collaboration with the Water
Communication Unit (WCU) of the MWRI, local STTA consultants and private vendors. Mr.
Abdel Bary Bakr, local Senior Communications Consultant, is providing support on a time basis
since the demands are reducing as the project winds down. Activities carried out during the
report period include:
• “Alternative Crops an Alternative Solution,” a 14 minute video highlighting farmers’ success
in cultivating high value, low water consuming crops is being screened during Task 1.3
workshops. Duplication and distribution of the video will take place in October.
