One of the best loved musicals, Little Orphan Annie didn’t start life by singing
about the sun coming up. In 1885 James Whitecomb Riley wrote a poem
originally about a character named Little Orphan Allie. The typesetter had
fumble fingers and voila, Annie was born. The Allie character was in fact
based on a real girl, orphaned and sent to basically become an unpaid
servant to a family of “do-gooders.” The first verse of the original poem
reads:
Little Orphan Annie's come to my house to stay.
To wash the cups and saucers up and brush the crumbs away.
To shoo the chickens from the porch and dust the hearth and sweep,
and make the fire and bake the bread to earn her board and keep.
While all us other children, when the supper things is done,
we sit around the kitchen fire and has the “moistest” fun,
a listening to the witch tales that Annie tells about
and the goblins will get ya if ya don't watch out!
Makes the tyrannical Miss Hannigan sound tame. Whitecomb Riley’s poem, of course, became a syndicated
comic strip, best remembered as having a girl with no eyes and a dog that ARF’ed as required. But, never
fear, MTW will put eyes into Annie and I’m sure Sandy will make the audiences oooo on cue. The new season
will open with good music, good fun and best of all a happy ending.
Preview vouchers will be distributed at the Membership Meeting. If you are unable to attend you can mail a
self-addressed stamped envelope as well as your check covering the $2.50 reservation hold to Barbara
Eannarino, 372 Carroll Park East, #206, Long Beach 90814. As always, no telephone orders, pick up or
deliveries.
