There will be a fifteen-minute intermission between acts.
The English poet
and playwright
T.S. Eliot (1888-
1965) originally
wrote the poems
that you hear in
CATS as light
verse for his godchildren
during
the 1930s. These
poems were collected
and published
in 1939 as
“Old Possum’s
Book of Practical
Cats” (‘Old Possum’
was a nick-
name for Eliot given to him by Ezra Pound).
By this time Eliot had already established
himself as one of the most important poets
of the 20th Century, with works such as “The
Waste-Land,” “The Hollow Men” and “The
Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.”
Although the whimsy of “Practical Cats” was
something of a departure for Eliot, the collection
proved popular and was reprinted
as early as 1940.
Several of the poems were set to music by
two different English composers in the
1950s: Alan Rawsthorne and Humphrey
Searle. Also in the 1950s, a young boy by
the name of Andrew Lloyd Webber found
himself enchanted by Eilot’s verse.
Lloyd Webber set all of the poems in the
collection to music. Recalling his earlier musical
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNI-
COLOR DREAM-
COAT, Lloyd
Webber used a
variety of musical
styles, including
pop, rock, classical,
music hall
and opera, to
help illustrate the
cats’ differing
personalities.
The 1982 reprinting
featured all-new
illustrations by
Edward Gorey.

The lyrics to the best-known song from
CATS, “Memory,” were actually written by
Trevor Nunn, but were inspired by an earlier
Eliot poem, “Rhapsody on a Winter
Night.” Additionally, the Act Two opener
“Moments of Happiness” is from “Four Quartets,”
written by Eliot at the outset or World
War II.
CATS the musical opened in London in 1981,
followed by Broadway in 1982. It was an
immediate
smash, and ran
in New York for
18 years, becoming
About CATS
CATS still holds the title of longest continual
tour.
CATS has also become an international phenomenon,
playing in over 250 cities in
twenty countries. It has been translated into
ten languages, including Japanese, Dutch
and Norwegian. Interestingly, the title itself
was never translated for foreign productions.
The Mexico production did a focus
group to see if audiences would respond to
GATOS, but it was a near-unanimous decision
to keep the English name.

MUSICAL THEATRE WEST LEGACY SOCIETY
If Musical Theatre West has been an important part of your life, you can help create this same experience for future
generations by including us in your estate plans. Leaving a bequest will ensure that musical theater remains a vital part
of the Southern California arts community.
The Musical Theatre West Legacy Society honors individuals who, by including MTW in their long-range financial and
estate plans, choose to create a personal legacy and help to ensure MTWÊs financial strength for future generations. Gifts
include bequests via a will or living trust, life insurance and retirement plan assets. Future plans can include gift annuities
and charitable trusts as well. These gifts may entitle you to an estate tax deduction equal to the amount of the gift,
thus reducing your taxable estate. In most instances federal estate tax regulations place no limit on the amount of your
estate tax deduction for qualifying gifts, thus encouraging bequests made to a charitable cause such as MTW.
Whatever the size of your estate, a bequest allows you to determine how your assets will be disbursed after your lifetime.
A charitable gift to Musical Theatre West through a bequest may also reduce probate costs and increase the assets you
leave to your loved ones. If you have remembered Musical Theatre West in your estate plans and wish to be honored as
a member of the Legacy Society, please contact Paul Garman at (562) 856-1999 x227 so your name can be added to the
growing list of patrons who are joining the Legacy Society.
CATS, Yes! As we all know, there are as many
different kinds of cats, as there are cat lovers.
One thing I’m sure we can all agree upon, Andrew
Lloyd Webber’s CATS, the musical, is one
of the most memorable musicals of all time. The
show opened in London in 1981, and the following
year on Broadway. CATS won the prestigious
Tony Award for Best Musical in 1983, and went
on to run for 18 years. CATS, has been one of
the top requested shows on our audience surveys
for several years. At last, Musical Theatre West
you about the MTW Guild, a group of dedicated
volunteers, I am very proud to represent, who
give generously of their time and talent to help
Musical Theatre West Footlighters
Welcome to CATS, a musical composed by Lord
Andrew Lloyd Webber based on T. S. Eliot’s “Old
Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” The production has
won many awards including the Tony Award for Best
Musical. It has set records on Broadway and in London,
and is now being brought to you by our own
Musical Theatre West. Get set for a performance of
singing, dancing and acrobatics! The Jellicle cats were
originally depicted by Eliot as common black and
white cats whose daytime nature is peaceful, pleasant
and restful, but who possess an active love of nightlife.
They like to gather at the “Jellicle Ball” and will
be singing Jellicle songs for Jellicle cats, because
“Jellicles are and Jellicles do” The name Jellicle cats is
a corruption of dear little cats and comes from a
poem by Eliot entitled “Pollicle Dogs (poor little dogs)
and Jellicle Cats.”
Footlighters supports Musical Theatre West by raising
money to support the Education and Outreach Programs.
Introducing the youth of our community to
Musical Theater is an important addition to the well-
rounded education of students and provides an opportunity
not available otherwise. Additionally Footlighters
offers scholarships each year to high school
students who wish to pursue a career in the theater.
Our Scholarship Committee has contacted local high
schools to encourage students to apply, and the committee
members have been attending many high
school productions to gain knowledge about the contenders.
Auditions will take place in early April, with
the winners announced at Music in the Morning on
June 18 th where they will perform before a live audience
and receive their award.
Footlighters membership is open to all, in support of
Musical Theatre West. Additional information is available
in the lobby or by calling the MTW office. We
are a friendly group, with four luncheon meetings a
year called Music in the Morning, where excerpts of
each upcoming show are presented. We’d love to
Musical Theatre West • 2011-2012 Season
Carpenter Performing Arts Center, Long Beach
Oct. 28-Nov. 13, 2011
Welcome to the ‘60s and the world of
big dreams, big girls and big hair!
This high-energy and uplifting show
based on the John Waters camp
classic film won the 2003 Tony Award
for Best Musical. Typical teenager
Tracy Turnblad wants nothing more
than to appear on Corny Collins’
dance show. When she gets her wish,
she changes the face of 1960s
Baltimore forever!
February 10-26, 2012
One of the all-time great musicals,
featuring “The Impossible Dream," one
of the all-time great standards. At the
height of the Spanish Inquisition, author
Miguel de Cervantes is imprisoned
and uses the story of knight-errant
Don Quixote to defend himself. Full
of indelible characters and a
beautiful Latin-tinged score, Man
of La Mancha ran for six years on
Broadway and won the Tony for
Best Musical.
June 29-July 15, 2012
Killer rabbits, shrubbery-obsessed
knights, angry Frenchmen throwing cows -
It’s everything you could want in a musical!
You don’t have to be a Python fan to
love Spamalot -you just have to love
musicals. “Lovingly ripped off” from their
classic film “Monty Python and the Holy
Grail,” this riotous send-up of
the Arthurian legend won the
Tony for Best Musical and
has had millions laughing
across the globe.
December 9-18, 2011
Missy, Suzy, Betty Jean and Cindy Lou
help you ring in the holidays!
The follow-up to the smash hit
The Marvelous Wonderettes
finds the girls at Harper’s
Hardware for the 1968
holiday party! Of course, the
Wonderettes bring their
signature four-part harmony
to songs from “O Tannenbaum”
to “Mele Kalikimaka.”
Loads of fun for the
whole family!
April 13-29, 2012
The surprise hit of our 2008-
2009 Season returns in an all-
new edition! Back by
popular demand, new
shows, new songs and
things musical theater.
You’ll re-discover why
Forbidden Broadway ran
for 26 years in New York!
“One of the finest regional
theatres in the country.”
-Bill Handel, KFI Radio
There’s nothing like the magic
and excitement of live theater,
and you have the best theater in
town right in your backyard!
