ADMISSIONS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, AAMU, <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong> ~ 12 ~<br />

The Office of Admissions accepts transfer credits for the <strong>University</strong> for purposes of student classification (i.e., freshman, sophomore,<br />

etc.). The deans of colleges or department chairpersons approve transfer credits for degree programs.<br />

No credits will be accepted for developmental (remedial) courses, orientation, or religion courses in a specific religion.<br />

Exploratory/overview/survey courses that discuss more than one religion are acceptable).<br />

Acceptance of Transfer Credit<br />

Students who transfer from another four-year institution or two year college must submit in advance for acceptance transcripts of all<br />

previous work done on the college level. Such transcripts must be sent directly from the institution at which the work was completed.<br />

Academic work completed at other schools not listed on the Admission Application will not be accepted for transfer purposes.<br />

Transfer credits are accepted conditionally until the student presenting them has demonstrated, through satisfactory academic<br />

achievement over a period of at least one semester, that he or she is able to pursue successfully the curriculum in which he or she is<br />

enrolled.<br />

Students transferring from colleges and universities must have maintained a “C” average and be in good standing with the institution<br />

from which they are transferring. Students on academic probation or suspension are not in good standing, and, therefore, will not be<br />

accepted by <strong>Alabama</strong> A&M <strong>University</strong>.<br />

A student who has been suspended from an institution because of poor academic performance is not eligible to enter <strong>Alabama</strong> A&M<br />

<strong>University</strong> immediately following academic suspension.<br />

Grades below “C” are not transferable. The only exception is as provided for in the AGSC/Stars guidelines for transfer credits for<br />

<strong>Alabama</strong> public two-year institutions.<br />

Statewide Transfer and Articulation Reporting System (STARS)<br />

The STARS Transfer Guide is to be honored for a period of four years from the date printed off the web site by all other public<br />

institutions of higher education within the state that offer programs in the specified discipline. Students should keep a copy of this<br />

guide for verification purposes. The STARS Transfer Guide remains valid and is guaranteed only if the student continues in the major<br />

specified on his/her transfer agreement. Changes made by accrediting and/or other regulatory agencies could result in specific<br />

requirements being added to the Transfer Agreement (i.e., No Child Left Behind Mandates). Any changes made by an institution in its<br />

degree programs will affect the transfer student in the same manner as the students native to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>Bulletin</strong> Year Issue - The students who use transfer guides will be graduated under the <strong>Bulletin</strong> in effect on date that the guide is<br />

printed unless they choose to go under the <strong>Bulletin</strong> in effect at time of transfer. This issue is covered in item #1 on the actual transfer<br />

agreement that prints out at the end of the transfer guide.<br />

The STARS program governs the transfer of credits from <strong>Alabama</strong> public two-year institutions to <strong>Alabama</strong> four-year institutions.<br />

Students at the public two-year institutions who have a STARS Guide, can transfer all courses listed on that Guide from public twoyear<br />

institution to any public four-year institution, including <strong>Alabama</strong> A&M <strong>University</strong>. There is a STARS Guide for every program<br />

offered at AAMU. Courses on the Guide will transfer and count toward half (50 percent) of the courses required for a specific degree<br />

program. The courses on the Guide are accepted under the same standards as courses taken at AAMU. If a “D” grade is acceptable for<br />

an AAMU course, then with the STARS Guide, the student can transfer the course from the public two-year institution with a “D.”<br />

Students intending to transfer to AAMU are encouraged to consult with their advisors and obtain a STARS guide from the<br />

AGSC/STARS Website, http://stars.troy.edu/stars/stars.htm<br />

International Institutions<br />

Post-secondary credits earned from international institutions, which are patterned after the British or other Non-American systems of<br />

grading, must be evaluated by the World Education Services, Inc. Applications for the evaluation may be secured from the Office of<br />

Admissions. Courses recommended by the World Education Services, Inc., will be accepted by <strong>Alabama</strong> A&M <strong>University</strong>. It is the<br />

responsibility of the student to execute, request, and pay the cost of such evaluations.<br />

Advanced Standing<br />

In order for transfer credits to be accepted for advanced standing, all prior college work must be declared on the official application<br />

and be supported by official transcripts. No credit for advanced standing will be accepted after the end of the first semester of the<br />

student’s enrollment. All grades must be “C” or above.
