As my first communication to the
members of the Roswell Chamber
of Commerce, I extend my thanks
and appreciation to Jim Matteucci
for leading the Chamber this past
year. Under Jim’s leadership the
Chamber is in great financial shape
and was able to serve the members
through increased activity in Santa
Fe during the legislative session,
provide opportunities to network
through Business After Hours and
Rise with Roswell events, as well
as being directly involved with the
Chamber’s sponsorship of Hike
It and Spike It. I also extend my
thanks to the Board members who
served the business community
this past year and look forward
to working with our new and
continuing board members this
year.
Formed in 1918 the Roswell
Chamber of Commerce continues
to play a vital leadership role in
local and state issues involving the
business community. Our 89 year
history has seen lean times and
times of economic prosperity. As
a young lawyer, I was told by Mr.
Clarence Hinkle how the Chamber
was instumental in taking the lead
in encouraging retirees to consider
moving to Roswell following the
closing of Walker Air Force
Base to fill the vacant
homes and to provide some

economic activity. The efforts
that started in this regard continue
to this day. Retirement packages
are frequently sent to interested
retirees who what to relocate in a
friendly, warm weather city that
is affordable and yet offers social
and cultural opportunities. Retirees
continue to have a significant
economic impact in our community
and we will continue our efforts to
attract retirees.
We have seen tremendous growth
in our medical community and
facilities the past few years. A
new hospital opened, new doctors
have located in Roswell, and new
technology has been purchased
to allow Roswell to become a
regional medical center for all
of Southeastern New Mexico.
The dairy industry continues to
provde tremendous employment
and economic activity to Chaves
County. Agriculture has always
been the backbone of our economy.
Dairies, cattle growers, sheep
growers, and farmers continue
to produce the food and fiber
which we depend and Chaves
County continues to be a leader
in agriculture exports. We have
seen a resurgence in oil and gas
activity the past two years. Retail
sales continue to rise and many
new retail outlets are moving to
Roswell. The Chaves County
Development Foundation continues
to attract new business to Chaves
County. It is my hope that the
Chamber will continue to attract
these businesses as new members
to join with us to make our voice
larger and more effective.
We need all members to take an
active part in Chamber events.
Participation in Business After
Hours, Rise with Roswell, Business
Showcase, and Roswell Legislative
Day are your programs and
only succeed if you participate.
Bermarr Treat, our Executive
Director, and the staff are doing an
outstanding job. The Red Coats
continue to be the official greeting
organization and do an outstanding
job representing our community
and our Chamber. With your help
and participation, the Chamber’s
mission will have been met: The
Mission of the Roswell Chamber
of Commerce is to promote
business prosperity by assisting
business development and fostering
community pride and spirit. I look
forward to serving you as President
this year.
