Sightseeing
Regensburg is almost 2,000 years old. Today,
you can still see the ruins of the original Roman
fortress walls. The Old Town, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, has kept its medieval character.

Shopping
Regensburg has the largest variety of stores
in all of Eastern Bavaria. The town offers two
large American-like indoor shopping centers.
A special shopping experience can be had by
visiting the large variety of small stores in the
Old Town. A unique opportunity to combine a
shopping trip with a walk through history.
Sports
Regensburg is the home of Germany’s best
baseball team and plays in a stadium that the
New York Times calls “one of hidden gems of
Europe”. Of course, Regensburg has a professional
soccer club that plays in one of the top
leagues in the country.

Stores in Germany are not open as long as
stores in the U.S.
From Monday through Saturday, stores
open between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. in the
morning and close at 8:00 p.m. at night.
Smaller stores often close at 6:00 or 7:00
p.m. during the week and early afternoon
on Saturdays. Stores are generally closed on
Sundays.

the largest city in
Eastern Bavaria has
much to offer to its
visitors. First of all it
has its long and interesting history, which
begins in the year 175 A.D. with the establishment
of a military camp. In order to
secure the northern border of the Roman
Empire along the Danube, Emperor Marcus
Aurelius called for the building of a military
settlement for 6,000 soldiers: Castra Regina
- the fortress on the river Regen (Regensburg).
The name comes from the northern
most river, the Regen river, which flows
into the Danube here.

of history. Most of the buildings date back
to the Middle Ages. Many of them are over
700 years old. There are even ruins from the

Walking north from the cathedral, you
reach the banks of the Danube. Here is
where the giant Stone Bridge, built between
1135 and 1146, arches across the river.
For hundreds of years the bridge was the
only bridge between Ulm and Vienna that

With the bridge at your back, you continue
up the narrow Brueckstraße directly
up to the Goliathhaus. On the façade of
the building you find a giant mural representing
the story of David and Goliath.
Turning right on the Goliathstraße, you
cross a small open square, the Kohlenmarkt
(Charcoal market) and reach the
Old Town Hall. This building was, at one
time, not only the residence of the city
government but also housed the Perpetual
Imperial Assembly from 1663 to 1806,
where rulers and ambassadors from all
over Europe met to discuss matters.
Today the Old Town Hall is home to a museum,
the Reichstagsmuseum, including
the eerie, yet fascinating, ancient torture
chamber in the cellar of the town hall.

and specialty retails stores just
like those found at home.
The Old Town, however, offers a very

you will find many small, lovingly run
shops. Each one set like a little jewel in the
historical ambience of the Old Town. Most

cards even if this is not announced with
a sticker on the door, the exception often

The Donau Einkaufszentrum in the north
of Regensburg was one of the first American
style malls in Germany. Today, Regensburg’s
biggest mall offers a variety
of 140 shops, specialty stores and cafés.
From fashion to entertainment electronics,
toys and books, from flower and garden
supplies to cosmetics, here you can
find everything you need. Restaurants,
cafés and specialty food shops make
certain that you don’t go hungry while
shopping. With 3,000 free

pedestrian bridge connects the Arcaden
to Regensburg’s main train station. The

Historical Wurstkuchl
The historical “Wurstkuchl” located right
next to the Stone Bridge is one of Regensburg’s
most unique little restaurants. For
over 500 years, this traditional little tavern

in the Oberpfalz and ranks
with the Regional Medical Center in
Landstuhl near Kaiserlautern, the largest
hospital outside of the U.S., according
to Dr. Ludwig Hecht, a doctor with
a certification from the Pentagon. For
over 21 years, Dr. Hecht has been treating
U.S. Army personnel in the Oberpfalz
and is well acquainted with their

distance in the relationship between
doctor and patient in the USA”.

The best baseball team in Germany plays
in the Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg.
The Buchbinder Legionnaires have won
the German championship in four of
the last five years. Their stadium on the
Donaustaufer Straße is biggest stadium in
Germany and has regularly played host to
international baseball tournaments. The
baseball season runs from spring to early
