Sightseeing
Regensburg is almost 2,000 years old. Today,
you can still see the ruins of the original Roman
fortress walls. The Old Town, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, has kept its medieval character.
Here you will find a short tour of the city and
important information about guided tours in
English.
My Tip
for Regensburg!
Throughout “Discover Regensburg”
you will find
many tips by Nickayla Myers-
Garner, a dedicated fan of
the city.
Nickayla, a native of North
Carolina, is a Hohenfels community
member who cur-
Nickayla Myers-Garner
rently lives in the Old Town
of Regensburg. She moved to Regensburg from
Parsberg 2.5 years ago and “has not regretted
one moment of it”, as she herself says. She was
able to find everything she needed to be happy
while living there: access to great shops, fun leisure
activities, interesting international friends,
English speakers and exciting places to explore.
Regensburg makes it easy for American visitors,
says Nickayla.
„When traveling here don’t let the language barrier
intimidate you, many Regensburgers speak
English and are eager to assist visitors to the city.
As soon as you arrive in Regensburg for the first
time go to the Regensburg Tourist Information
Office which is located in the town hall (Altes
Rathaus) where the friendly staff will help you
find activities to suit most of your needs.”
Translation help in the Internet
Not all Internet sites about Regensburg offer information in English. Google’s
translation service site: http://translate.google.com can help you out in a pinch.
The translations are not perfect but often good enough to help you understand
the content of the German Internet site.
Shopping
Regensburg has the largest variety of stores
in all of Eastern Bavaria. The town offers two
large American-like indoor shopping centers.
A special shopping experience can be had by
visiting the large variety of small stores in the
Old Town. A unique opportunity to combine a
shopping trip with a walk through history.
Sports
Regensburg is the home of Germany’s best
baseball team and plays in a stadium that the
New York Times calls “one of hidden gems of
Europe”. Of course, Regensburg has a professional
soccer club that plays in one of the top
leagues in the country.
6 Foreword
Discover Regensburg!
Dear American Neighbors in
Bavaria,
As mayor of the City
of Regensburg, I would
like to extend a cordial
invitation to you to
visit us. Regensburg,
the largest city in
Eastern Bavaria has
much to offer to its
visitors. First of all it
has its long and interesting history, which
begins in the year 175 A.D. with the establishment
of a military camp. In order to
secure the northern border of the Roman
Empire along the Danube, Emperor Marcus
Aurelius called for the building of a military
settlement for 6,000 soldiers: Castra Regina
- the fortress on the river Regen (Regensburg).
The name comes from the northern
most river, the Regen river, which flows
into the Danube here.
up much of the old part of the city today.
For that reason, Regensburg has been entered
onto the list of UNESCO World Heritage
Sites.
We, however, do not only focus on the past.
Regensburg is a city with three universities
and serves as headquarters to many important
companies. Regensburg is one of the
major driving forces in the German economy
today.
When you come visit us, you will find a
thousand possibilities to shop, to go out,
to go sightseeing, or take in cultural and
sporting events. Did you know that Regensburg
is the home of the reigning German
baseball champions - the Buchbinder Legionaires?
With this brochure “Discover Regensburg!”,
we would like to whet your appetite to
come discover Regensburg for yourself.
You won’t be disappointed!
Regensburg became rich and famous in the
Middle Ages. Wealthy merchant families
traded with the luxury goods of that time
across all of Europe. The architecture of the
Middle Ages has been preserved and makes
Yours Sincerely,
Hans Schaidinger
Mayor of the City of Regensburg

the story of David and Goliath.
Turning right on the Goliathstraße, you
Old Town Hall. This building was, at one
Shopping in Regensburg:
No wish left unfulfilled
© Tino Lex
A shopping tour in Regensburg
leaves no wish unfulfilled. The
city offers large shopping malls
and specialty retails stores just
like those found at home.
The Old Town, however, offers a very
special shopping experience. Here
you will find many small, lovingly run
shops. Each one set like a little jewel in the
historical ambience of the Old Town. Most
of the stores in Germany accept credit
cards even if this is not announced with
a sticker on the door, the exception often
being very small shops. If you are unsure
about this, don’t hesitate to ask the shopkeeper!
Exceptional and Unique
The Old Town of Regensburg combines, in
a unique way, the ambience of historical
„Come and experience this
history. Right behind his McDonalds
Frank Mosher
from the original wall of the Roman fortress
Clinics with the Highest
Level of Health Care
Regensburg medical clinics have an excellent reputation worldwide
R
egensburg is an important medical
treatment location for U.S. citizens
in the Oberpfalz and ranks
with the Regional Medical Center in
Landstuhl near Kaiserlautern, the largest
hospital outside of the U.S., according
to Dr. Ludwig Hecht, a doctor with
a certification from the Pentagon. For
over 21 years, Dr. Hecht has been treating
U.S. Army personnel in the Oberpfalz
and is well acquainted with their
situation. U.S. Army personnel and their
families receive top treatment throughout
the world, however, “there is more
distance in the relationship between
doctor and patient in the USA”.
Is personal attention a criterion for
choosing medical treatment? “I think it
does indeed play a role when everything
else is functioning equally well” believes
Dr. Hecht. That is certainly the case in
Regensburg: The clinics are able to cover
almost the entire spectrum of the medical
care portfolio and their influence
extends far beyond the region of Eastern
Bavaria. The doctors and researchers at
the university hospital and the six other
big hospitals have an excellent reputation
throughout the world. The quality
of the medical treatment has always
been the most important aspect. This
can be attributed to the way the clinics
work together and the networking between
doctors and medical care facilities
in the city.
A medical cluster has developed here
and has made Regensburg into a quality
medical treatment center, where all
illnesses can be carefully diagnosed and
treated.

Nickayla
Myers-Garner
Regensburg always has
entertaining festivals
and cultural events
happening. There is always
something to do
in the city. My biggest
problem on the weekend
is trying to narrow down and
decide which activities to attend as
there are many events happening in
the city each weekend.
