Advent season
Today we begin the celebration of the Advent season. As we do so, our
thoughts turn to the claims of Christmas. Have you ever paused to consider
just exactly what it is that Christmas claims? Christmas makes claims such
as that God intervened in human history; that what ancient writers said can
be applied to Jesus, born long after their time; that God became flesh, and
that Jesus was born of a virgin. These claims are no small matter. For
some, they are very difficult to believe. No wonder Christmas has become
a battleground for some! And yet it is those very claims that we intend to
examine in our current sermon series, “Theology in a Manger: The Outrageous
Claims of Christmas.”
Along those lines, consider what Henri Nouwen says: “Songs, good feelings,
beautiful liturgies, nice presents, big dinners, and sweet words do not
make Christmas. Christmas is saying yes to something beyond all emotions
and feelings. Christmas is saying yes to a hope based on God’s initiative,
which has nothing to do with what I think or feel. Christmas is believing that
the salvation of the world is God’s work and not mine.”
Christmas says that salvation “is God’s work and not mine.” Maybe that’s
why Dietrich Bonhoeffer, imprisoned by Hitler during World War II, wrote to
his fiancé about one lesson he had learned from his life in prison. “A prison
cell, in which one waits, hopes, does various unessential things, and is
completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened
from the outside is not a bad picture of Advent.” How true!

23. She is survived by her
sons Kenneth and Jim, and daughter

John Emery Jones died on November
23. He is survived by his
wife Rosie, sons Vern and Gary,
and daughters Caren and Angela.
Services are pending.
Bonnie Rae Hadley died on November
24. She is survived by her
children Jeralyn and Bob Stindt,
Candy and Dean Hadley, Donna
and Roger Hadley, Merrilee and Ken
Scofield, nine grandchildren, two
great grandchildren, her sister Jan
Fisher, and brother Duane Barnes. A
memorial service will be held at 4:00
p.m. on December 22 in the Barnes
Amphitheater (A-Level) of the Medical
Center. In lieu of flowers, the family

Joe Webb died on November 26.
He is survived by his wife Merrilyn, son
