About this Program Guide Series
As the Skokie Park District celebrates its 85th Anniversary in 2013, we are proud to roll
out the district’s first full-color seasonal program guides. This year’s guides will feature a
full-color retro look, celebrating the district’s rich history, largely from the 1940s to the
1970s, when color was taking off in the movies, in magazine advertising and on television.
Some of the images (black-and-white and color) contained in this year’s four guides have
been pulled from the district’s photo archives, thanks to the Skokie Heritage Museum and
the Skokie Historical Society.
About the Cover
This season’s cover features a modern day photo of the Emily Oaks Nature Center pond,
and a photo of a Niles Center (now Skokie) youth baseball team, taken around 1915.
These two photos likely have location in common, as organized Skokie baseball was
played 100 years ago where Oakton Park stands today. The adjacent Oakton and Emily
Parks were later the first park district acquisitions in 1929, along with land where Oakton
Community College stands today.
Renew your leisure life this spring!
Please join me on February 3 in wishing a “Happy 85th Birthday” to the Skokie Park District!
We celebrate the milestone in this year’s full-color program guides, a colorful look back at
recreation and leisure in Skokie over several generations.
The Skokie Park District offers thousands of programs and events annually, with spring program
registration kicking off on February 15. This season, featured major events include the Devonshire
Playhouse production of ‘The Women’ in February; Breakfast with the Bunny & EggStravaganza in
March; Earth Day, Skokie’s Spring Greening and two Devonshire Playhouse youth presentations in
April; and the Skokie Festival of Cultures in May. (See pages 30-35 for all special events.)
Incredibly, it’s also time to begin thinking about summer pool passes. Residents receive a discount
and a 5-visit Splash Pass if they purchase passes before April 30. (See back cover.)
So, whether you are planning your park district time indoors or outdoors, enjoy the warmer
weather that this season brings to Skokie.
Have a fantastic spring!
conditions and daily activities.
Aldo Leopold—A Standard of Change
Saturday, May 25 • 1-2 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. • Fee: $15
A one-man play written by and starring storyteller Jim Pfitzer,
Aldo Leopold – A Standard of Change takes place on one evening in and
around the famous Wisconsin shack that inspired much of Leopold’s
writing. Aldo Leopold was an educator, philosopher, forester, ecologist
and wilderness advocate, and the play explores the influences and
challenges that led him to pen his widely popular book,
A Sand County Almanac.
As the lights come up, Leopold walks up the path. It has been 64 years
since his death, and as many years since he has seen his now historic
Shack. Leopold invites his audience to join him as he reacquaints himself
with his beloved landscape, remembers influential friends and family,
quotes from some of his most important writings, and ponders his legacy.
Recommended for ages 12 and up. Contact Emily Oaks for ticket
