Welcome to Multimodal 2013 

On behalf of the Multimodal team, it gives 

me great pleasure to welcome you to 

Multimodal 2013. 

Atrium on the 24th April). All exhibitors and 

visitors are invited and all can expect a warm 

welcome. 

Despite tough trading conditions in our market, 

Multimodal has grown by 15% in its sixth year 

and offers a greatly enhanced visitor experience. 

Multimodal is the only UK and Irish event for 

the freight and transport sector that embraces 

all modes of the supply chain; rail, sea/water, 

road and air as well as warehousing and IT. It’s 

here that you’ll be offered the opportunity to 

compare suppliers, modes and routes to help 

you decrease your costs, increase efficiencies 

and find greener supply chains, as well as being 

able to keep up to date with current trends and 

developments in the free-to-attend seminars, 

briefings and master-classes. 

The Multimodal Seminars will cover all modes 

of the supply chain – and also feature sessions 

on multichannel, compliance benchmarking, 

supply chain finance, portcentric, container 

weighing, freight derivatives, modal shift and 

CO2 reduction amongst others. The seminar

Welcome to Multimodal 2013 

Now in its sixth year, Multimodal has 

become one of the most popular and 

successful exhibitions in the logistics and 

supply chain sector’s calendar. 

And, as chief executive officer of the United Kingdom 

Warehousing Association (UKWA) – the 

UK’s leading trade association representing the 

third party logistics (3PL) industry – I am particularly 

pleased to see that so many 3PL specialists 

are once again using the show to promote

Indeed, one of the key attractions at this year’s 

Multimodal will be the UKWA Pavilion which

London Gateway Say Fastest Way to Unload a 

Container Ship Is ʻStigʼ At It! 

Some say he sleeps in the highest, darkest point of the gigantic London Gateway quay cranes, and some say reality 

exists simply because HE lets it..... All we know is; heʼs called The Original Stig! 

DP World London Gateway, the UKʼs new deep-sea port and Europeʼs largest logistics park, is delighted to announce 

The hottest event at Multimodal 2013. They will be bringing The Original Stig to Birmingham for the biggest challenge 

Multimodal has ever seen. 

Using an exclusively designed quay crane simulator, visitors to London Gatewayʼs stand (640) will, for the first time 

ever, be able to exclusively challenge The Original Stig to a quay crane race! 

Following training from the Original Stigʼs crane driver cousin, attendees will have the chance to go head-to-head in a 

challenge to see if they can beat The Original Stig at offloading containers from a container ship in a set time. Those 

who are victorious get an exclusive prize. Losers will get nothing but their name on the leader board! 

When questioned about the challenge, The Original Stig said “..............” and when asked if he thought he would actually 

be beaten, he said: “...........”. Undaunted by his menacing silence we asked if he felt London Gateway was going to 

be The place for the World to do trade with the UK, he nodded. Some might say that was an acknowledgement; others 

guessed he had an out of body race while we were talking to him! 

The Original Stig will also be the guest of honour at the Multimodal VIP dinner sponsored by DP World London 

Gateway on the evening of 23rd as will Perry McCarthy. Perry will give the after dinner speech where he will confirm he 

is The Original Stig as well as sharing fascinating stories of his time as a Formula 1 racing driver. Dirt may well be 

dished!

Flexi Narrow Aisle 

at Multimodal 

Visitors to the Flexi Narrow Aisle stand at this year’s Multimodal exhibition will 

be able to learn more about the company’s recently launched Warehouse 

Systems Division. 

Introduced to offer a comprehensive range of warehouse planning and design 

consultancy services to the logistics industry, Flexi Warehouse Systems will 

offer impartial advice on a broad spectrum of intra-logistics solutions. 

“Flexi Warehouse Systems’ aim will be to offer the most space efficient and 

cost effective system for each application,” explains John Maguire, Flexi Narrow 

Aisle’s sales and marketing director. 

In addition, Flexi Narrow Aisle personnel will be on hand to discuss Flexi’s top 

selling articulated forklift and VNA truck systems. 

With their ability to operate in aisleways as narrow as 1.6 metres – articulated 

to 220 degrees - and lift pallet loads to heights of over 12 metres, Flexis can 

save warehouse operators at least 30 per cent of their storage costs. Furthermore, 

the ability to unload pallets from road vehicles or goods in marshaling 

areas and deliver loads directly to the storage racks can reduce existing handling 

costs by a further 50 per cent.

reinforcements 

Skills for Logistics is funding nearly 1000 work 

placement places at logistics firms for ex-armed 

forces personnel 

Skills for Logistics (SfL) have formally 

launched the Military Work Placement 

Scheme. The scheme aims to offer 

1000 people leaving the military two-week 

work placements with logistics organisations 

and SfL is seeking logistics employers in all 

areas across the UK to host the work experience 

placements. 

The Programme is an important part of 

SfL’s aim to help UK Logistics companies 

address their current and future skills 

requirements and remain competitive. As 

well as providing service personnel with 

sector specific information, advice and 

guidance, helping them to identify how 

their skills match roles in the logistics 

sector, SfL will facilitate opportunities 

for service personnel and logistics sector 

employees to come together 

through the structured two-week work 

experience scheme. All participating 

service personnel benefit from a guaranteed 

job interview and feedback at the end 

of the two weeks. Employers gain support to 

plan and deliver structured work experiences 

that enable service personnel to find 

out about work in the sector and provide 

ample opportunities for them to demonstrate 

their worth. 

SfL’s Mick Jackson says: “We are seeing 

fantastic enthusiasm for the Military Work 

Placement Scheme following its formal 

launch last month. Employers clearly want 

to get involved in the scheme and have 

access to the excellent resource offered by 

men and women leaving the armed forces. 

There is demand for work placement 

opportunities across the whole spectrum of 

logistics roles, from warehousing to driving, 

traffic office to import/export. 

“Alongside the large companies wishing 

to get involved in the scheme, we are also 

building on work that we have carried out 

in local areas with local hauliers and logistics 

operations. The logistics sector as a 

whole has a requirement for skilled labour, 

particularly to fill acute driver shortages. 

Skilled labour exists within the Armed 

Forces but does not or cannot transfer 

effectively into civilian job roles. It is this 

market failure the scheme seeks to address. 

This programme is well on the way to transforming 

our sector by providing a bridge 

between employers and skilled ex-service 

personnel.” 

Jackson adds: “We can give service 

leavers the chance to translate their military 

experience into civilian language 

and to provide the bridge to civilian 

employment. For personnel on a 

placement, every bit of experience will 

be logged and tracked on their personal 

locker, which will help towards the development 

of their skills as they move into logistics 

roles.” 

Around 18,000 personnel leave the 

armed services each year. On top of this, 

reforms to the British army announced last 

July will see it lose 17 units that will reduce 

its overall strength by 20,000. This will 

result in two more tranches of redundancies 

over the next three years. All of this means 

that there is a huge pool of motivated, 

capable and disciplined talent open to the 

logistics sector.
