REGION 4
LATOYA DEESE
LaToya Deese, 1st gup, Karate Masters, was awarded $500.00 for the year 2005. She currently
attends Houston Baptist University with a concentration in Entrepreneurship.
LaToya was six when she began training at Milberger’s Tang Soo Do, September 1993. She
had problems with a bully at school that would constantly tease her. Some of the selfdefense
techniques she learned were particularly helpful. Mr. Milberger changed to Soo
Bahk Do under the Moo Duk Kwan Federation. She left MDK as a 1 st Gup due to a Dan testing
conflict. Her mother helped her join Karate Masters three months later. She retested
for 1 st Gup under the World Tang Soo Do Association with Master Sharpe as her instructor. She enjoys Karate
Masters a lot better because it’s mostly based on survival.
Quote from Scholarship Essay:
“Out of nowhere, a boy ran beside me and kept ramming himself into me. About halfway across the field, I collapsed
into the dry grass and lost one of my teeth… The same kid constantly bullied me, teased me and frequently
stole my lunch. “At that point, my mom decided to enroll me in karate. In September 1993, I began training at
Milberger’s Soo Bahk Do where I gained knowledge in self-defense… The next time I had a confrontation with
him, he tried to punch me, but I blocked it and caught him in an arm-lock. I enjoyed hearing him cry for his mother
while other kids witnessed the situation and applauded. I had no problems with him after that.”
REGION 20
MEGAN BORREE
Megan Borree, Allied Gardens Tang Soo Do Karate Academy, was awarded $1,000 for the
year 2005. She is currently attending Grossmont Community College (TAG Program) then
UCSD, majoring in Engineering
Megan started training at age 7. Attended 5 world championships. Attended and competed
in every regional tournament since joining TSD, Attends monthly black belt classes, special
clinics and CPR certification. Performed jobs of score keeper, time keeper and judge.
Performed duties of examiner at gup tests. Member of the Demo Team. Positive role model
to all students.
Quote from Scholarship Essay:
“I have a huge respect for all of the people who have the courage to stand in front of a panel of judges and do a
form with their whole spirit. I am always amazed and inspired by the dedication of some students, especially
those in the older divisions, who don’t let anything stop them; they just train because they love to train. This is
the incredible spirit of Tang Soo Do that has probably had the biggest affect on me and given me the most from
my training.”
Weekend
Coping with Violence and Terror
after Katrina
Self-defense classes help residents reclaim their community.
ow! What a weekend. During
W
the Region 8 Championship
on October 14-15, 2005 our
Regional Scholarship
Committee had a very busy weekend.
Those in attendance for one of our
biggest Regional tournaments on record
were able to see the fundraising efforts of
the committee and the presentation of
awards to two very dedicated students.
The fundraising effort started Friday
evening when the Scholarship table was
set up and we began selling the Master’s
Trading cards and our new sports bottles
with Association and Foundation logos.
The table was busy throughout the
evening and all day Saturday selling merchandise,
facilitating the trading of cards
between avid collectors and selling 50/50
tickets. Many to Ms. Linda Russo, Mr.
Benjamin Haas, Ms. Amy Ilko, and Ms.
Jenna Giraulo for their assistance at the
table during the weekend. While the
table was taking care of walk up business
Ms. Julia Harvey was making the rounds
through the stands selling 50/50 raffle
tickets and Ms. Vilma Reinard was selling
sports bottles throughout the crowded
room. Through the collective efforts
of all involved at the table and in the
crowd we were able to raise over $1800
for the Region 8 Scholarship Fund.
The highlight of the weekend happened
during the opening ceremonies
when Scott Jones of Northern Star
Karate and Angelica Evangelista of Pal
Che Tang Soo Do were presented with
our most recent Scholarship Awards.
Each received a certificate and a check
for $1,500 from Grandmaster Shin. Mr.
Jones and Ms. Evangelista are outstanding
examples of the ideals promoted by
the World Tang Soo Do Association and
World Tang Soo Do Foundation. We are
proud to be able to offer them this assistance
fter Hurricane Katrina, gangs
A
terrorized the weak, the young
and the old. As dehydration
became another horror to deal
with, starting with the elderly and then the
newborn, the AP news agency reported
that some survivors were determined to
defend their neighborhoods and their
lives. “We kind of together decided we
would defend what we have here and we
would stay up all night every night” said
army veteran Charlie Hackett.
It seems unreal but imagine for a
moment your town being flooded and told
to find a way to your local high school for
federal aid and that help is coming.
However, days later you realize the authorities
simply forgot about you, leaving you
without food, water, toilets, electricity or
protection from the thugs. Your local high
school would eventually turn into a violent,
lawless, third world jungle, where the weakest
and most defenseless would perish from
the heat, lack of food, water, intimidation,
violence and murder from these thugs.
“attacked” from all angles and in different
situations, you will feel more confident as
you leave class or work in the yard. You’ll
learn how to effectively strike, yell, kick
and avoid attackers. In today’s society it
takes more than just staying out of dark
alleys to avoid possible assailants. It takes
self-confidence.
This isn’t a confidence that says, “Go
ahead, and attack me. I can take you.” It’s
a confidence that comes from knowing
you have taken control of a possible situation
and that no matter what the outcome
of an attack, you have given yourself
all the tools possible to assist you in making
decisions about fleeing, negotiating or
fighting.
It allows you to feel more confident
when you’re outside, shopping or even
doing reports at work. It allows you to feel
in control at meetings, with co-workers
and with yourself.
An added bonus is that this new selfconfidence
encourages you to stick to that
diet or exercise program, ask for a promotion,
head that committee or do something
you have put off because you didn’t
feel you were ready.
Do something for yourself. Support
the relief efforts of hurricane Katrina and
bring a friend and attend our free selfdefense
class. After all, you’re worth it.”
came up with a great idea
recently which she shared with WTSDA
Headquarters when she visited there
recently.
She said that lots of kids want to donate
money to the building fund but don't have
the $40 necessary to buy a brick like the
adults do.
However, many of them do have pocket
money and many of them do love those
rubber wrist bracelets which are being sold
in different colors for many different charities.
Why didn't the WTSDA come up with
one so the kids could donate their money
and show their pride of helping with the
WTSDA Building Fund efforts by wearing
the bracelets? What a great idea!!
So, we know have a red rubberized
bracelet (see Safiya's right wrist in the
photo) that is being sold at all regional
events at the building fund tables or can
be purchased through your instructors.
at the Iowa Community Center in Villa
Head instructor Tony Perkins (Sam
Perkins (Cho Dan), challenged the students,
ages 4 & up, to solicit sponsors/
donations and kick their way to the club’s
$2000.00 pledge goal. It was an energetic
and fun filled event featuring music, giant
tote boards, cheering parents & grandparents,
and oh yes, lots of kicking.
By the end, the students even "kicked
out" the goal by raising over $4,600.00
for the American Red Cross Disaster
Mr. and Mrs. Perkins extended their
Breaking Boards to Beat Cancer
GTMA-Linden students raise over $800 during Relay for Life.
tudents and families of the
S
Grand Tradition Martial
Arts/Linden club of
Linden, Michigan participated
in the American Cancer
Society’s “Fenton – Relay for Life”
event at the Fenton High School on
June 25 and 26, 2005.
The 24 hour event ran from 2:00
PM on Friday through 2:00 PM on
Saturday. Community committee
planning for the event had begun at
least one year prior to these dates.
The Linden club began their efforts
approximately 2 months ago. The
club raised funds through a bottle
drive, as well as through on-line
requests, luminaria sales and regular
donation solicitations.
Instructor, 4th Dan Mr. Chris
Anderson and several students,
ranging in rank from 7th Gup to 6th
Gup and ranging in age from 9 to 11,
also contributed by breaking boards
for $5.00 each, to the wild amazement
of the crowds who gathered to
watch the demonstration! The total
amount raised by students of
GTMA-Linden was $863.00! Not
bad for a first year team. The entire
Relay group raised over $144,000 for
cancer research.
The experience was challenging,
fun, touching, thought provoking,
and rewarding. It provided an
opportunity for the club to do something
together, besides karate – to
promote community spirit.
Karate brought us together, and
together we contributed to a very
worthwhile community project. It
was exciting to be a part of the event,
and even more exciting, at the end of
24 very hot and humid hours, to hear
the conversation turn to talk of “how
we can do better next year”!
Breaking boards for $5
each, members of the
Grand Tradition Martial
Arts/Linden Club (Linden,
American Cancer Society.
there for almost seven years. When I
thought about my high school graduation
project, Tang Soo Do popped into
My mother and I came up with the
My mother and I
came up with the
idea of making a
Tang Soo Do
related quilt.
We put our
talents together
to make something
beautiful.
First, I had to go to my instructor and
tell him my plan of making a quilt and
using it to raise money for the Building
Fund. This was very important because a
student of Tang Soo Do should do nothing
without the permission of their
instructor.
I also needed permission from
Grandmaster Shin. Then, and only then,
I could proceed. I was able to get their
permission after showing them my
drawings of how it would look and I
began my project.
Making the quilt was a long and
organized process. I did one step at a
time and also took my time so that I did
not get frustrated. My mother and
instructors were a major help to me. I
How does a high school project become a work of art and a fund-raiser for the
Building Fund? Region 8 student, Genevieve McGuigan, along with the help of her
mother and instructors constructed a beautiful quilt that was used in a raffle to raise
$3,125 for the Building Fund.
could not have done it without them.
When the quilt was completed, I
could start raising money for the
Building Fund. My instructor, Mr.
Peterman, contacted Ms. Gonski and
Master Kaye, chairman of the Building
Fund Committee to help with the raffle
ticket setup.
Some of my classmates from
Brandywine Martial Arts helped to sell
tickets; we sold them at the Region 8
Black Belt test and at the Region 8
Championship. We raised $3125.00!
I had a lot of help with my graduation
project. This was a great honor and I got
a chance to meet a lot of key people in
our Association.
I hope that you decide to help raise
money for the Building Fund. My graduation
project was a major success. Now
