South Africa Needs Our Support Again
I
recently had the opportunity to visit South
Africa and work with students from Pretoria
Tang Soo Do and South African Tang Soo Do.
I was pretty surprised to find the Ross family,
students training there who were originally from
Master Godwin’s Korean Martial Arts Institute out
of my home Region (8). The parents are both Cho
Dans, their oldest son an E Dan, and their youngest
son a 2nd Gup. It is indeed a small world! Advanced
students from both schools met at the home of the
Ross’s. We had a good training session and students
stayed for a South African Brai (Bar-b-que).
As usual, the technical level of the students
was very high. This was true for the young white
belts I had the opportunity to observe as well as the
advanced students I worked with.
Roberto Bovo, Chief Instructor of Pretoria Tang
Soo Do has been conducting classes at a private
school for black youngsters. He offers the classes
for free and incurs the travel expenses on his own.
He now needs funding for Gup testing, WTSDA
Registration and uniforms. Anyone wishing to
make a donation can send it to WTSDA with the
instructions it is to be used by Pretoria Tang Soo Do
for this purpose only.
I am hoping to return to South Africa in March
and I am truly looking forward to seeing these
students in uniforms; sporting some colors in their
belts.
2009 Clínica Latinoamericana de Maestros
2009 Latin american Masters Clinic
Durante los días 9 al 11 de diciembre se
celebró la 6ta clínica Latinoamericana
de Maestros y campamento de liderazgo
de la Región 12. Este año se celebró en
la Villa Marista, Mar Del
Plata, Argentina.
El lugar donde se
llevó a cabo la clínica
de Maestros es un lugar
hermoso y que ayuda
a tener una experiencia
de paz espiritual, un
verdadero retiro de
nuestras vidas cotidianas.
Durante esta clínica
participaron maestros
de diferentes partes de
Argentina, Chile, Estados
Unidos y Puerto Rico.
Argentina, Chile, Costa
Rica, México, Sur y
Centro América que
aprovechen esta clínica
para fortalecer nuestros
vínculos como latinos a
participar en la clínica
Latinoamericana de
Maestros 2010 que va a
ser más excitante y no
tengo duda que va a ser
todo un éxito como lo fue
esta clínica.
The 6th Annual Latin American Masters
Clinic and Region 12 leadership camp was
held from December 9-11, 2009. This
year the event was held in Villa Marista,
Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
The location of the Masters clinic was at a
beautiful place, which helped to provide an experience
of spiritual peace, a true retreat from our everyday
lives. The clinic involved Masters and candidates
from different parts of Argentina, Chile, United
States, Aruba and Puerto Rico. From the moment we
arrived at the training camp Master Walter Serapio,
his family and students made us feel as if we were
part of their family. They handled every detail of the
camp, from the accommodations to activities, food
and transportation. Thus making this experience
an extremely pleasant and unforgettable one. This
camp and clinic was a success thanks to his effort
and all those who collaborated with it.
We enjoyed many great experiences during this
camp. From learning and refining our techniques
directly from Grandmaster Shin, to yoga (from
Master Salazar) and personal defense (from Master
Jara). Additionally, we enjoyed the talent show put
on by the candidates. They showed us a range of
talents, which included opera-style singers, displays
of cooking from future chefs, the dancing Masters
and the Region 18 rappers.
This Masters clinic was not only a time of
learning and refinement of our techniques but it was
an opportunity to share with foreign Masters. It also
allowed us to strengthen the ties of friendships and
served as a vehicle for a total retreat of our everyday
lives. We were able to forget that we are instructors
and reminded us that we are always students and we
must constantly be learning. This experience served
as an opportunity to take a moment in our lives to
look towards our future of our organization. We
were able to consolidate our knowledge, unite and
strengthen our organization in our region and our
country.
I urge all our Latin American Masters and
brothers/sisters of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica,
Mexico, South and Central America to use this
clinic to strengthen our bonds by participating in the
Latin American Masters Clinic in 2010. It is sure to
be just as, if not more, exciting and successful than
last years!
Region 22 Takes Wing
Regionals on the reef
On January 1st, 2010 WTSDA welcomed
its newest Region. Comprised of studios
from parts of Region 8 & Region 5 -
Region 22 contains studios from the
western half of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Our first
official function was a combined Instructor and
Leadership class held on January 16th at River
Valley Tang Soo Do Academy in Ambridge, PA.
While the members of the Region 22 Leadership
Class participated in a vigorous training session
led by Master Jared Arteca, the studio heads met
in a separate room to begin organizing the events
that would fill the year. In addition to scheduling
events such as the Dan Test, Dan Camp, Regional
Championship and Instructor/Leadership classes,
they discussed the policies and procedures that are
necessary for the smooth operation of the Region.
Each event was assigned a coordinator and when
necessary a team to assist them. This meeting was
an excellent opportunity for the members of the
new Region to start working together. I personally
wish to thank each and every one of them for their
contributions during the meeting and the good
work I know they will be doing on behalf of our
new region.
After 3 hours everyone had a firm understanding
of the goals and tasks for Region 22 in 2010. Our
meeting was adjourned and the Leadership Class
completed their training. We took the opportunity
to note this important event with a group photo and
then enjoyed a pizza lunch before heading back to
our respective studios.
We have a lot of work to do and are excited
about the prospects for growth and development
that Region 22 has going forward. On behalf of
all the members of Region 22 I would like to thank
Grandmaster Shin and the Masters for their support
and a special recognition to the members of Region
5 & 8 who have offered their support for this new
adventure.
sense of brotherhood, love and support for all
Interview with Master Brian (Fishman) Fisher
Master Gordon opened the Region 8 Championship
with comments on being a true Champion, and what it
takes to be one. As I contemplated his words, I decided to do
an interview with the best Champion I know, Master Brian
Fisher. Following is a few of his reflections on tournaments
past, and how they compare with those of today.
C.V. How old were you when you started Tang Soo Do?
B.F. I started at the age of 12.
C.V. How many years have you been teaching as a chief
instructor?
B.F. I guess it’s about ten years I have been instructing. I
put in five years with Main Line TSD, five years with Oxford
TSD, and I had experience teaching at Shin Karate before
that.
C.V. What has your years as Sah Bum Nim taught you?
B.F. Those years of teaching have made me into a better
person, and it has been a great study of human nature. I
believe to be a good teacher; you must be a good student.
I believe it takes work; you cannot make a Black Belt
overnight.
C.V. How do you compare our tournaments now as to
when you began competing?
B.F. For one thing, parents are more supportive now; also
back when I was first competing at Black Belt level, the
The World Tang Soo Do web site is undergoing some
exciting changes. The web committee has been
working on upgrading the site and you will soon see a
completely updated site with a new look and feel. Several
new features are in the planning, including a pass word
protected “Instructor’s Only” area where instructors and
studio owners can get the latest information from World
Headquarters.
We are also in the process of upgrading all World Tang
Soo Do’s forms and documents and creating electronic
versions which will be readily available on the new site.
This means that all the forms and applications the studio
owners need to efficiently run their Do Jang can quickly
and easily be downloaded and printed from the web site.
A new “Students” area is planned in addition to areas of
general information for the public interested in learning
more about World Tang Soo Do.
Electronic commerce is also coming to the WTSDA
web page. The first incarnation of the web store was set
up for online purchase and payments through PayPal
for the 2010 WTSDA World Championship. Students
could register online and pay their registration fee as well
as purchase T- shirts, spectator Wrist Bands and Picnic
trophies were pretty much won by the same competitors
again and again. At the present, we are producing new
champions every year.
C.V. Interesting, to what do you give credit for this
change?
B.F. The new contact rules (meaning no contact) has made
it more attractive to parents, and competitors that were
tentative to compete before. It provides a safer venue. Also
the judging is much better, more fair and consistent.
C.V. You have achieved what most students’ only dream
about, winning the Regional’s three times in a row and holding
the title of World Champion for four years. How would you
advise a student with dreams of being a Champion?
B.F. Well, I would begin serious training at least three months
before a major competition. I would put in two to three
hour workouts every day. It takes dedication to obtain your
goal.
C.V. Do you have any words of wisdom for the average
competitor?
B.F. Yes, do your best, try to improve inwardly, and you will
gain confidence with each competition.
moving in stances. The students recognize the value
of the content of the seminar and the potential to
complement our Tang Soo Do techniques.
Ms. Ellen Paine comments, “I appreciate how
the content of the seminar flows directly from our
Tang Soo Do techniques and forms. This provides
an excellent basis for the material and encourages
practical creativity. You really do discover that the
attacks and counters are the ones firmly rooted in our
traditional Tang Soo Do and as Master Molinaro
says ‘where do you find that in the form?’”
Mr. Matt Jacobi, a first year participant,
comments, “The Guard provided a new and amazing
insight into the pyung ahn and naihanchi hyungs
that I never would have imagined and gave unarmed
self-defense a whole new dimension. I am looking
forward to next year.”
Mr. John Curtin stated, “Throughout the
association, one will hear the often repeated theme:
that a true appreciation of the martial arts requires
the investment of one’s body, mind and heart. My
experience at the Guard was an embodiment of all
three. Being involved in an experience such as this
has the effect of reinforcing one’s own passion as
well.”
Another first year student, Mr. John De Stefano
commented, “The most valuable thing I got from
the Guard was inspiration, literally a breath of fresh
air for my spirit. I realized after returning home, I
had allowed my training to become stale. After the
hard-hitting weekend with Master Molinaro, I have
Annual GUARD SEMINAR
been finding all sorts of ways to take myself and
others to the next level. I can’t wait to return next
year.”
Mr. Cesar Fernandez, a Guard veteran,
comments, “It is nice to work with the assortment
of the attendees. It seems everyone picks up on
different aspects of the training. Master Molinaro
is a great teacher and he keeps the passion going
from year to year.”
“The most valuable thing I
got from the Guard was
inspiration, literally a breath
of fresh air for my spirit.”
Mr. Roy Donaldson, a repeat veteran of the
seminar states, “I think for me, this was the best
clinic so far. The level of information presented over
the weekend was amazing. The best part was that the
instruction has evolved with the clinic to bring out
the best in all levels of participants from the beginner
to the people that have attended for the four years it
has been running. The Guard emphasizes the things
we hold closest in Tang Soo Do: Traditionalism,
Professionalism and Brotherhood. Master Molinaro
embodies what we should all be striving for in our
everyday training: pushing the limits of our training
to constantly improve our skills.”
Much appreciation goes to Kwan Chang Nim and
the World Tang Soo Do Association for the ongoing
support and sanction of the Guard seminars. The
seminar raised $1,000 which was donated to the
building fund for the 4th straight year.
Senior Black Belt students interested in attending
Region 8 Year-end Leadership Class and Dinner
Where Can Leadership Lead You?
Every month, elite instructors of many
dojangs throughout Region 8 meet for
either an afternoon or an evening of
exceptional training, led by a Master
instructor within the region. The Sam Dan, Sah
Dan Instructor and Sah Dan Master members
enjoy the sweat and Qi embodied by the group. The
culmination of this training is the year-end class
and dinner with Grandmaster Shin. He joins us, to
give of his time, explaining further his philosophies
and techniques; we are thankful and grateful for
that opportunity. On November 21, 2009, members
of the Region 8 leadership classes converged on the
Mimidis Karate dojang in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
to celebrate another year of camaraderie and
training together.
We opened our
session with stretching,
followed by meditation.
Grandmaster Shin
emphasized that
we expand our
meditative state
beyond preparation
for training to include
healing those areas of
our body that needed
revitalization.
Our training for the day was not for advanced
techniques. It was for the enhancement and
refinement of basic techniques. We drilled with only
single techniques; Kwan Chang Nim corrected our
errors as he observed the group. The attainment of
improvement is our goal as higher leveled black belts;
there is to be continued striving for this improvement.
He emphasized that at the end of a drill, returning
to “Baro” should not be a time of lassitude, but a
time of readiness, for the next exercise; there is to
be no break in the rhythm between exercises/drills.
When “Shio” is commanded, then one may relax
and prepare for further training.
We moved on to the empty hand hyung, one by
one, under the observation of Grandmaster Shin.
He stopped us throughout the session, to correct us,
to add historical and technical information to our
accumulated knowledge regarding the association’s
hyung. He emphasized that the power of our art
comes from contraction and extension to the body
to produce a powerful force for striking.
For advanced training, Grandmaster Shin
invited us to understand the history of weapon
use as it pertained to the sword. He presented a
representation of the Korean sword use and the
traditions behind the basic use of the sword. He
has become aware of our casual concern for
weapons and encouraged us to remain vigil about
the lethality of those weapons that we carry and to
pursue the attitude of the warrior; to respect what
those weapons represent to human life.
We ended our session in meditative repose to
quiet our spirits and end the training. Hungry as we
were, we moved our celebration to a local Chinese
restaurant to enjoy
family style dining
and a recap of
the year’s events
and look forward
to 2010 with the
World Tang Soo
Do Association.
Grandmaster Shin
was presented
with a gift of a
quilt, handmade
by Ms Arielle
Sekula, emblazoned with the logo designs of many
dojangs throughout the region. He was moved
by the presentation and the loyalty shown by his
instructors. The day was capped by his presentation
of events forthcoming, to include moving the World
Championship site to Greensboro, North Carolina
this coming summer.
We all said our farewells for the holidays, smiles
on our faces, and with determination to return
anew in January to continue our training schedule
together as brothers in professional martial arts.
Region 8 Championship 2009
Building Enthusiasm When It’s Just Not There
October 22, 2009, it was back to the
Pocono Mountains again for our 23rd
Region 8 Championship. The weather
was another wet, rainy couple of days,
where it rained so hard the toads were in danger of
being drowned, but the weather could not dampen
the spirits of the participants. A little fewer than
700 competitors were vying for medals and the
Championship Cups. Though the competition was
fierce, the rings were conducted in a professional
manner, and the competitors behaved as expected
of WTSDA students.
The Championship got started at around 6:00
p.m., with the creativity competition. Nine teams
showed their stuff. It is always fun to see the different
themes the schools come up with and to watch the
young athletes demonstrate the high degree of
technical ability that must be there in order to place
in the top standings.
Immediately following the creativity competition,
the adult Black Belts were on stage. It was an honor
and a privilege to be a judge in a ring for this group.
It always gives me a thrill to see TSD techniques
performed by the Black Belts. The weapons, hyungs,
and free sparring revealed these folks at the top of
their game.
We wound up the activities for the night and
went back to our rooms to rest up for the next day’s
events.
9:00 a.m., October 23rd, Master of Ceremonies,
Master Nate Gordon, began the day with some
words of wisdom to the competition congregation.
He pointed out that the purpose of the competition
was “Not to win, but to strive to become a
Champion.” He went on to explain the definition
of a True Champion was not always the one who
wins the prize. The making of a True Champion
was more about how you play the game and what
one takes from the experience.
A lot of excitement was in the air, with high
expectations of achievement, as the youth group got
under way. The head table and the judges did such a
great job that we were ahead of schedule before the
Opening Ceremonies. Opening Ceremonies began
on time with an invocation by The Rev. Master
Richards. The winner of the creativity competition
(KMAI) then performed their award winning show.
The next thing up was the promotions of degrees
in Black Belt. After performing a choreographed
sequence run by Master Fisher, the newly promoted
Black Belts (1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree) came forward
to receive their new rank, a very moving spectacle.
Also receiving higher rank were Black Belts being
promoted to Sah Dan (4th stripe) and three
individuals were promoted to Master (red stripe).
What a joyful time for these Black Belts and their
families, a reward for years of dedication, hard
work, and sacrifice.
At the ending of ceremonies, the rest of the
competition got under way.
All competition was finished at 3:00 p.m., a
record time. As the tournament was breaking up,
one could observe many smiling faces.
Imagine the scene: 7 o’clock on a Saturday
morning; a 13-year old and 11-year old
wanting desperately to sleep in after a long
week of school, basketball, play practice and
karate; dad is out of town visiting his parents; mom
is responsible for waking the kids to get them ready
for a karate tournament. Sounds like a joyous
Saturday morning, right?
Well...not exactly, not in the Mudd household or
at least not initially. Here’s how things unfolded …
The Region 8 Eastern Zone Spring Championship
tournament was finally upon us and I was up early
to prepare. I was looking forward to it because I was
going to have my first opportunity to participate as
a timekeeper. The tournament was
also taking place at the Phoenixville
YMCA, where my son Jordan and
I are assistant instructors under Dr.
David Painter. So, a good number
of our students were competing
and I was looking forward both to
watching and supporting them.
However, at that hour of
the morning, Jordan and my
daughter Savannah were not quite
as enthusiastic as I was. In fact, there was quite a
bit of grumbling as they slowly moved from their
beds down to breakfast. And, yes, there were those
inevitable comments and questions: “I’m so tired.”
“Do we have to go?” “Can’t we just stay home this
time?” “We never get to sleep in on the weekend.”
Fortunately, I had an immediate reply, gleaned
from our former instructor, Mr. Ray Salas. At a
recent gup graduation, he had explained the most
important time to go to karate was on the very
occasions when one did not want to go. I reminded
the kids we had a great opportunity to put his advice
to the test and so, yes, of course, we were going!
Next I went downstairs to iron our do bohks
and, some minutes later, realized that Mr. Frank
Altiere’s influence was also having an impact on our
family. Suddenly, through the floor boards, came
blasting the theme song from ‘Rocky,’ a song which
a good many of us at Vaughn’s Dojang associate
with Mr. Altiere who uses it quite often to motivate
the Cho Dan Bo and Black Belt Saturday morning
classes. Savannah had decided to put it on and was
now using it as a way to build her and her brother’s
enthusiasm for the tournament.
By the time we got settled in at the YMCA, I
could tell the kids’ mindset had already changed as
they practiced their forms, mingled with the other
Vaughn’s students and received encouragement from
the many Vaughn’s instructors also in attendance. In
the end, they both had a great time and even came
home with some trophies.
Believe it or not, they openly acknowledged
that those sometimes pesky adults were right…it is
good to push yourself, especially during those times
when you just don’t feel like it. Perhaps the biggest
reward for doing so is proving to yourself that
summoning up the Tang Soo Do
spirit (especially when you would
rather do absolutely nothing) can
positively impact not only your
mood, but also help you reach many
of life’s goals both large and small.
As for me, the tournament
gave me a chance to see once again,
from a mother’s perspective, what
a positive influence Tang Soo Do
has been on Savannah and Jordan.
While their father (also a student at Vaughn’s) and
I endeavor to provide the proper foundation and
boundaries which will allow our children to grow
into respectful, resourceful and responsible adults,
there is nothing like having other outside influences
to back up our efforts. Vaughn’s Dojang provides
exactly this type of support in an environment that
has allowed our entire family to grow closer.
Participating in this journey with our children has
been remarkably rewarding in numerous ways, only
one of which is encapsulated in our experience at the
Region 8 Spring Championship. Looking forward,
I know Tang Soo Do will continue to provide many
opportunities and examples off of which I can draw,
as a mother, to encourage Savannah and Jordan
throughout their teenage years and beyond. Now,
that’s something to cheer about, even at 7:00 on a
Saturday morning!
Community Service is a “Grand Tradition”
Grand Tradition
Martial Arts
( G T M A ) -
Livonia, Michigan
celebrated the conclusion of
an active year of training and
community service with
a year-end Christmas
party in December 2009.
Students played games,
enjoyed delicious food and
socialized with friends and
family. In addition, many
members also provided a
new toy to donate to the
U.S. Marine Corps “Toys
for Tots” program. “Toys
for Tots” collects and distributes
new toys as Christmas gifts to
needy children in the community.
“It was a good opportunity to
enjoy friendship, fellowship, and
time together and to be able to
share the Christmas spirit with
the community through gifts
to ‘Toys for Tots,’” commented
Master Instructor, Al Brace.
GTMA-Livonia students
reflected on participation in
2009 events like the Region
5 Championship, in which,
the school Creativity Team
performed “Mission Impossible”
and the Master’s Extravaganza
rendition of “Grease.” GTMA-
Livonia paired with GTMA-
Plymouth to host the Master’s
Extravaganza, which provided a
new opportunity for the schools
to pool their abilities and give
an appreciation for the “behind
the scenes” efforts required to
promote such events.
New opportunities were also
found when GTMA-Livonia
provided instruction with basic
karate skills and the discipline
of martial arts to over
120 children attending
the YMCA Summer Day
Camp. GTMA-Livonia
preformed community
demonstrations in support
of the YMCA’s Kid’s Day
Program at a local mall and
also visited a retirement
facility to promote World
Tang Soo Do.
The Christmas festivities
capped a year of community
service, growth, and friendship
for GTMA-Livonia participants.
Brent Lacy, Sam Dan, of Twin Dragons/Commonwealth TSD, was awarded $1000 in Spring 2010.
He is attending the Virginia Commonwealth University as a Counselor Education major. He intends to seek a career
as a school counselor. Brent Lacy began his TSD career approximately 12 years ago in Aiken, SC under the tutelage
of Master Wilson Smith. In his essay, titled “How Tang Soo Do has made a difference in my life” Brent states: “Tang
Soo Do has helped me learn to macro-manage as well. In conducting classes and working out schedules and curriculums,
one has to be able to look down the line and see how things could potentially develop.”
Wilson Smith, Sam Dan, of Twin Dragons was awarded $1000 in Spring 2010.
He is attending Clemson University as an Economics major. His career goals are the continued pursuit of undergraduate
degrees in Economics and Engineering. In his essay, Wilson explains “I feel that Tang Soo Do has helped me to
develop and nurture a desire to help others…an attribute which will allow me to succeed as I head into my future,
while helping others to succeed with me.”
Elise Casello, Sam Dan, of Penn State Martial Arts Group was awarded $1500 in Fall 2009.
She started her training at River Valley Tang Soo Do Academy in 1995 and now attends the Penn State University
as a Psychology Major. Her goals are to be an elementary school teacher and a WTSDA studio owner. She states:
“He (my instructor) has told me in order to be a leader; you must have people that will follow. With those words, I
take what I learned from both my instructors and use that to set a good example as high rank at Penn State Martial
Arts Group and hopefully inspire those who are next in line to be who they are and lead with the same genuineness,
confidence, and organization that I am learning to bring out in myself.”
Vincent Ho, Cho Dan, of Northern Star Karate, was awarded $1000 in Fall 2009.
He is attending the Pennsylvania State University as a dual Biology/psychology major. He intends to pursue research that investigates the
beneficial effects of meditation. In his essay he states that “When I look back to my first steps in this glorious adventure, I see myself as
someone who was not ready to enter the world. Due to my experiences in Tang Soo Do, I matured at an accelerated rate. My training has
honed my mentality to new levels. My techniques have honed my body into a more efficient person. Finally, my teachings have ensured that I
will make the right decisions when I need to. All together, these factors have all been implemented in my life to elevate me from a mediocre
path to the Tang Soo Do lifestyle.”
Every year, Region 9
offers a scholarship
to students who are
current or prospective
students at a college or university.
Funds for the scholarship come
from tournament/clinic fees
and fund raising that totals to
anywhere from $1000-$1500.
The new chairman of
the scholarship fund, Mr.
Mike Porco Jr. (Sam Dan), is
determined to raise more money
to offer to scholarship winners.
Scholarships are given once a
year at the Region 9 Tournament
in the spring to two students.
Students must complete a series
of tasks and uphold a set of high
standards in order to even be
eligible to apply.
With an obsession for pain
and a creative, yet unique way of
thinking, Mr. Porco Jr. decided
the idea of himself running the
New York City Marathon was
the perfect choice in order to
accomplish his task.
The New York City
Marathon began in 1970 with
100,000 people who apply to run
the 26.2 mile marathon, starting
in Staten Island and ending in
Central Park, Manhattan! For
the 2009 NYC Marathon, over
110 countries were represented
with participants as young as 18
to as old as 88 years old. About
102,486 people applied to the
2009 Marathon, and only 43,741
were accepted. 43,475 people
actually finished the torturous
run, making 2009 the year with
the largest number of finishers
since 2007. Participants included
male and female open runners,
wheelchair, and hand cycle
racers.
Mr. Porco Jr. (Bib #62,664)
finished the 26.2 mile race at
place out of 43,475. Mr. Porco Jr.
explains that one’s personal limits
are truly tested, but that it was
also one of the most rewarding
experiences ever. ”You start at the
top of a bridge, and all you can
see is the open road and spurts of
people running. That was one of
the most incredible experiences
I’ve ever had with running. I also
had A LOT of time to think…so
I thought about everything.” Mr.
Porco Jr. was not alone in his
travels, for several Porco’s Karate
students/parents, TSD members,
friends and family all joined to
support and cheer on Mr. Porco
Jr. Donations and Pledges were
collected before, during, and
after the NYC Marathon totaling
around $2000. Region 9, Porco’s
Karate Academy, friends and
family would all like to thank
Mr. Porco Jr. for his dedication,
unselfishness, and continuation
of striving to better the lives of
others.
Fitness-A-Thon For The American Red Cross
One of our
r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s
as martial artists
is to provide for
the welfare of others and we
at Allied Gardens Karate
Academy take this duty very
seriously. On Saturday, April
10th, 2010 Allied Gardens Tang
Soo Do Karate Academy in San
Diego, California hosted the
first annual “Fitness-a-thon” to
raise money for Haiti and Chile
earthquake victims. Raised funds
also went towards “Share Our
Strength” which provides meals
for children in the USA who
don’t have enough to eat (like
the school lunch programs). It
was a great day for a great cause!
Participants collected donations
and burned up six hours with
different exercise routines; karate
aerobics, hand and kicking
techniques, target kickboxing,
cross training and yoga.
Our program began with Kyo
Sa Nim Laura Hoyt conducting
meditation and a yoga stretch
warm up. Master Kenneth
Purnell challenged everyone with
his expert knowledge and creative
workouts along with Master
Candidate Shane Nelson who
demonstrated fast and inspiring
hand technique combinations.
A professional yoga instructor,
Rebecca Tennant, also a former
WTSD practitioner, donated
earlier class earnings as well
as donated her time to end our
program.
These activities were trying
for many levels of athleticism.
Master Larry Dercole and Master
Candidate Mrs. Leslie Dercole,
Master Kelly Goodwin, Master
Marsch and Master Mrs. Marsch
were there feeling the martial art
spirit. Members throughout our
region contributed to the cause
as well as the fun. Most of us
completed the entire six hours of
fitness bliss with hard work and
high spirits. It was a lot of fun to
work out together and challenge
ourselves as individuals and as a
team.
Various local community
businesses donated food,
beverages, and the proceeds
from their fare. Allied Gardens
provided a delicious, healthy barbe-que
and we enjoyed spending
time with our Region 20 Tang
Soo Do community.
Although times are tough
we raised close to $2000. Many
thanks to our generous Region
20 brothers and sisters and our
local community businesses
who helped make the “Fitnessa-thon”
a success. Think about
doing a similar activity with your
region to help out those in need.
Imagine the impact we could
make for those in need if the
WTSDA had a charity activity
day!
Kick-A-Thon Benefiting Relay For Life
On Thursday, April 22nd, students from D.J. Studios Karate (of Philipsburg & Clearfield), participated in
a Kick-A-Thon to benefit the Relay For Life organization . Sixty students and instructors participated
in the event, performing 1,000 kicks in a personal-best time of 29-minutes. Each participant worked to
collect pledges and donations, along with the support of local businesses and corporate sponsorships.
Through everyone’s efforts, the
studio managed to raise a grand
total of $5,000.00, which was
presented to the American Cancer
Society/Philipsburg Relay For Life
on June 19th. The D.J. Studios
In January of 2005, the WTSDF
Construction Committee began selling
1000 pillars. So far we have 192 pillars
sold and 808 left to sell. Market trends
for purchasing and building new
properties has risen astronomically
over the past few years and our
original budget for construction,
which was set in 1993, does not match
the reality of actual costs in 2010. In
order to accelerate our fund raising,
we established the $1,000 Donors
Club. Anyone who wishes to join this
effort should contact Headquarters
or their local Building Fund Chair
who wish to purchase a pillar may
pay in installments. If anyone has
