JULY 2007WTSDA Foundation NEWSVaughn’s Dojang Takes its Responsibilityto the Community SeriouslyCaringforHumanityEach year, members of Vaughn’s Dojang take on variouscommunity and charitable projects. Participation inevents such as self-defense seminars, blood drives,clothing drives, and fund raisers are an important partof being a student at Vaughn’s.The most recent fund raiser Vaughn’s sponsored was a kick-athonto benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Nearly 30 studentskicked 14,588 times on May 5, 2007, raising over $4,000 for thehospital. The event lastedabout two hours, withstudents and instructors onhand to help count kicks.Sah Bum Nim donated abike to the student whoraised the most money.Ms. Hannah White, [6thgup] and member ofVaughn’s Special Dragonsclass raised $380 and tookhome the bike. With thesuccess of the drive,Vaughn’s will be makingthe kick-a-thon an annualevent!Another importantcommunity support eventVaughn’s hosts is a drive tosupport the BethesdaProject. For the last 6years, Vaughn’s hasorganized a collectionevery winter.The Bethesda Projectprovides shelter, food and support services tothe homeless of Philadelphia. The dojangcollects t-shirts, gloves, soap, razors, shavingcream, and other necessities. Students from allclasses generously donate such items eachholiday season so that others can have some ofthe basic necessities.Vaughn’s has also worked with the AmericanRed Cross since 2002, sponsoring 2 blooddrives each year. The most recent, held onSunday, March 4, 2007, was a great success.With over 50 donors presenting, and 44collected units, Vaughn’s exceeded its goal of 40units. We believe that a blood drive is anexcellent way to help others. So many patients need blood eachyear that the American Red Cross is always in need of donors.Sponsoring a drive is easy; the Red Cross provides all the materialsand does all the set-up, all that is required is for donors to bewilling to donate. Each drive, many Vaughn’s students take timeout of their Sunday giving blood or spend time at the dojang incase the Red Cross needs anything. 2007 WTSDA Scholarship Award RecipientsREGION 7BRENT LACYBrent Lacy, E Dan, of Twin Dragons Martial Arts was awarded $1000 in May 2007. He attends the College of Charlestonwhere is in studying Neuropsychology. Brent is currently considering post-graduate work after completing hisundergraduate studies at the College of Charleston. There are several advanced fields of psychology that he is currentlyinterested in studying.Brent started his training in 1997 under the direction and leadership of chief instructor Mr. Wilson Smith in Aiken, SouthCarolina. During the past 10 years, Brent has grown to be a contributing member to both his studio and Region 7. In additionto learning and growing at the regional level, Brent has also attended two WTSDA Championship events with plans ofcontinued participation at that level in the future.
