North to AlaskaWant to have a good time? Want tosee some top-notch Tang Soo Do?Want to meet some really interestingindividuals? If this sounds like fun,I strongly suggest a trip to Region 19, located inAlaska (America’s last frontier). When I got an invitation from Master Uttechto attend a weekend of events hosted by MasterWick, including a Black Belt test (Friday, 04/03), atournament (Saturday, 04/04), and a clinic (Sunday,04/05), I jumped at the chance to attend. I havebeen hinting to Master Wick and Master Uttech forsome time that I would love to visit their patch. Iguess they finally got tired of me pestering them.As a kid, I used to dream about making it to theYukon area. I read all I could find about the GoldRush from authors such as Jack London and RobertService about how challenging it was to survive insuch a fierce environment.I was not disappointed.I arrived there inthe late afternoon onThursday, April 2nd. I waswelcomed at the airportin Fairbanks by MasterWick. It was a short driveto my hotel, where I gota chance to freshen upbefore dinner. At dinner, after catching up on eachother’s time since the Master’s Clinic, Master Wickwent over the schedule of events. The region’s BlackBelt test was to begin at the Fairbanks studio at 2:00p.m. the next day. When we arrived at the Dojang, the candidatesand their families were waiting for us. I could feel theexcitement in the air. After the opening ceremoniesand introductions, the test began. The candidateswere put through a rigorous two-hour workout. Iwas very impressed by the 100% effort the testinggroup put out. It was one of the best performancesI had ever seen.Shortly after the test, there was a banquetscheduled. I would estimate about 200 practitionersattended. It was a formal affair, with everyonelooking their best, and the meal was great. Afterthe dinner, it was back to the hotel to get readyfor the next day’s Championship, at the FairbanksWoodriver Elementary School. On Saturday the 4th, the tournament started withthe Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons. Of course, theystole the show. Next were adult Gup competitors(hyungs and sparring), then weapons for Brown Beltto Cho Dan Bo (children and adults), followed byyouth Black Belt weapons and hyungs, adult BlackBelt weapons and hyungs, youth Black Belt sparring, and finally adult Black Belt sparring. The tournament of about 240 competitors wentoff without a hitch. It was a well-coordinated eventthat finished in record time. Immediately after theChampionship, we all went to Master Wick’s Dojangfor an Alaskan BBQ (the temperature was a balmy7 degrees). The place was packed, and I luckily gotmy burger down before it froze. On Sunday, April 5th, the Regional Clinic gotunder way at 9:00 a.m.I had the pleasure ofteaching three groups, ranging from Orange beltall the way thru to ChoDan Bo and Black Belt. The last evening I spentwith Master Wick seeingthe sights of Fairbanks, like Santa’s North Pole ToyShop (where all the lettersfrom all over the UnitedStates addressed to Santa wind up) and a trip to seethe Northern Lights (sadly, not out that night). Thenext day, early in the morning, it was goodbye to myfriends in Alaska and off on my journey back hometo Philadelphia.During the time I spent in the air on my wayhome I had an opportunity to reflect on the pastweekend—meeting some of the WTSDA’s best, sharing techniques, feeling the martial spirit, andgetting a taste of good old Alaskan hospitality. What an experience!I guess this is one of the reasons I love Tang SooDo—meeting and making new friends who belongto our great warrior society.Submitted by,Master Chuck Vaughn4 WTSDA News October 2009

It’s About Life ChangeRegion 7 gathered for Black BeltCamp June 12-14th at scenic FurmanUniversity. Over 100 black belts andCho Dan Bo’s were present. This wasRegion 7’s largest camp thus far and in addition tofive Regional Masters, Master Efrain and MasterRachel Valentin from Region 9 attended. Thanks tothe hard work and dedication of Master Joe Scotaand Master Joel Gilreath, Region 7 black belts hadtheir 10th annual camp experience and came awaywith a deeper, integrated love and understanding ofTang Soo Do as a way of life!Friday night and starting at sunup on Saturdaymorning, students participated in various workshops. The workshops were phenomenal and students wereexposed to new techniques, skills and approachesthat enhanced training and teaching ability. Duringbreaks and after the workouts we had a chance tosocialize and swap TSD “tall tales.” New black beltsand recent transfers shared their experiences andMaster Mitchell Dunn instructed students aboutTSD history. The Masters Valentin spent time sharing theirexperience and philosophies about the martial artsand TSD. Master Rachel Valentin, Sah Dan, hasstudied the martial arts for 28 years. Early on shetrained 3 hours a day, 6 days a week and was oneof only three females in her school. Her romancewith Master Valentin was kindled at her E Dantest after he “came to her rescue” when she broke aboard with an already injured ankle. Master RachelValentin demonstrates true perseverance and hasan incredible teaching ability with her attention todetail and her creative approach to the art.Master Efrain Valentin, Yuk Dan, has practicedthe martial arts since he was seven years old. Heowned his first school at the age of 19. His firstinvitation to Masters Camp came at age 21. Theday he was scheduled to leave his wife went intolabor. She graciously agreed for him to head on tocamp after the birth of their first child, and he madeit to camp with 3 minutes to spare. She states, “OurGrandmaster challenges us and this is one of thehardest organizations to achieve Master.”The Valentin family is a TSD family. Siblings, spouses, cousins and children all participate. MasterValentin says that even if his kids don’t ever becomeMasters, “they will be good people” as a result oftheir training and TSD way of life. Both of these Masters clearly love the WTSDAand relish the life change that evolves when studentstrain and commit to a TSD way of life. They focuson teaching not only physical technique, but alsolife skills, such as self-respect, courtesy, service,self-control and good decision making. They lovethe stories their students tell about how TSD haschanged their lives and enjoy sharing the hope thatcomes through perseverance and brotherhood. They derive energy and excitement from watchingtheir students grow and flourish in the school and intheir personal lives. The Valentins venerate a spiritof family and cooperation and are willing to sharetheir experience with every student and instructor. The Masters Valentin’s confidence, optimism, humility, generosity, humor, and expertise areobvious reflections of their commitment and passionfor the martial arts. Master Valentin summed it upnicely when he said “We are changing lives” and “Thejourney is never over.” The black belts of Region 7departed Sunday morning with opportunities forchange, new skills, excitement, and a deeper passionand love for Tang Soo Do.Submitted by,Kathy Scully, E DanScota Karate Academy6 WTSDA News October 2009

12th Annual Ki GOng ClinicThe 12th Ki Gong Clinic, sponsored bythe World Ki Gong Club (WKGC), washeld again this year at the beautiful andpicturesque Asilomar Conference Center,January 16-18, 2009. This was my third yearattending, and altogether there were thirty-eightparticipants, many coming very long distances:Alaska, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Florida, NorthCarolina, Arizona and further afield, Great Britainand the Netherlands. Most were returnees, but therewere a few newbies, and seeing new faces means thatword is spreading about the mental, physical andspiritual benefits of Ki Gong! The weekend weather was absolutely amazing, lending itself well to the contemplative earlymorning walks on the beach, and enhancing morethan one evening meditation that caught the beautyof the sun’s setting rays. The combination of springlikeweather in the mid 80’s and the intense focus onpositive meditative practices made these three daysmagical. The clinic begins on Friday afternoon withcheck in and introductions and goes through theevening until approximately 10:30 PM. Then, it’s upbefore the sun the next morning at 6:00 for a warmup of Hyang Gong followed by an hour of silentmeditative walking on the beach.Day Two also goes late into the evening, eventually ending with a long meditation from 9:30to 10:30 PM.Day Three begins like Day Two, with coffee, tea, a snack and a warm up at 6:00 AM before themeditative walk on the beach. Sunday ends for thepractitioners with a lunch, and the celebration ofthose who are graduating from one level to another. This also marks the end of the clinic. The agenda varies with each day, and sometimesthe group is broken up into levels for receivinginstruction and/or to practice one of the Ki Gongforms. For the second year in a row Mrs. Becky Ruppmade the Ion Cleanse foot baths available forparticipants. First-time users were free, but thereturnees’ fee of $25 for each half hour went to theWorld Ki Gong Club. While the wonderful weather was admittedlya bonus, the content of our twenty-two hours offocused work was further enhanced by the presenceof Mrs. Shin, Grandmaster J.C. Shin’s wife andpartner in the practice of the healing art of Ki Gong. The few times I’ve had the privilege of observingMrs. Shin with a group of people, either Ki Gong orat a Tang Soo Do event, it is amazing to watch herhealing touch at work. The knot in my left shouldercan attest to the power of that healing touch. It wasgone in just a matter of minutes, and all she didwas locate it and apply a bit of pressure! But, whilethere is no arguing with her healer’s hands, it is thepleasure of her presence and her lovely personalitythat truly heals. The agenda for each dayis usually packed withsomething differentvirtually on the hour. This year’s agenda also included guest speakerMaster John Miyata, whose expertise is Ki Gong, and has a practice in the Lake Tahoe area. MasterMiyata was the guest of Master Tim Schroeder, theChief Administrative Officer of the WKGC. Thegroup was able to observe Master Miyata workon Polly Parker, which was quite fascinating. Healso led us through a meditation that he called the“Sitting Buddha” meditation. The descriptions foreach of the positions were so perfect that it was easyto remember this particular meditation once I gothome. The agenda for each day is usually packed withsomething different virtually on the hour. Beginningeach day with a Hyang Gong meditation and warmup; a beach walk and silent meditation (don’t forgetto walk heel to toe, NO DUCK FEET, and walkbackward for 100 steps at least!) while you arecontemplating the nature of the universe; reviewingand practicing the higher forms of Ki Gong such asKi Cho Ki Gong (led by our East Coast Director,8 WTSDA News October 2009

Sandy Lipstein on the beach at sunset); Tae KeukKi Gong (also outdoors on the beach at sunset)and Yong Moon Gong (learning and review forlevels 1-3 with Grandmaster Shin); GrandmasterShin reviewed the significance of Five Elements (OhHang Gong) Meditation and theory; and, let’s notforget the much anticipated SO JOO CHUN (ifyou’ve never done this meditation, you should try it.You will never forget the experience!).This year Mrs. Mary Hall-Mars walked usthrough a really beautiful meditation called“Healing Sounds.” Each healing sound correlatedwith a specific movement and area of the body thatyou should focus on during the meditation. Whileit was hard to write down what I was doing while Iwas doing it, the experience was so memorable thatthe next time I have the opportunity to participatein Healing Sounds Ki Gong, I think some of it willcome back! One of my personal favorites, Kinesio taping, was also one of the presentations on this year’sagenda. Master Michael Inoshita demonstratedsome taping techniques that he commonly uses inhis practice as a physical therapist. We had the opportunity to work a bit with TaiChi as presented by Mr. John Robertson. Themotion he taught us was quite hypnotic, soothing, and fun in its complexity. I brought it home andused it with my students as a whole body warm upfor PE. Thank you, John.Pendulums were in motion for a portion ofthe second evening as participants worked with avariety of tools in their binders, using pendulumsmade of semi-precious stone or metal. Radiesthesyis the sending or perceiving of energy, and the useof the pendulum is one way of demonstrating thistechnique.Grandmaster Shin introduced us to a new KiGong form, Spring Forest Ki Gong. A DVD wasused to help us see the moves and forms in action, and we followed along.Following final discussions and closing, theparticipants packed up and checked out, but itwasn’t yet time to say goodbye! Each clinic endswith a luncheon held in a private dining room, followed by a graduation or promotion for thosewho have completed the necessary clock hours ofKi Gong participation and readings, and who havedemonstrated competence in the required Ki Gongforms for their level. The motion he taughtus was quite hypnotic, soothing, and fun inits complexity.WKGC C.A.O. Master Tim Schroeder andWest Coast Director, Mrs. Becky Rupp each saida few words about the participants, the clinic itself, the WKGC, and then they turned the floor over tothe members of the group, who had a chance toshare their impressions of what they learned, theirexperiences, and what they will take away from theclinic to share with others back at their Dojangs.Lastly, we heard from the person who is thereason that each of us is present in the room at thattime: Grandmaster J. C. Shin. It is really an honorto be present when Grandmaster Shin has a momentto share his own special brand of wisdom with thosewho love and admire this great man for the manycontributions that he has made for the bettermentof the world. Each clinic is memorable not onlyfor the wealth of information that he brings for ourlearning but also for the nuggets of wisdom, humorand truth that he drops along the way…and if you’renot paying attention you might miss one!The 2010 WKGC West Coast Clinic will be heldonce again at the Asilomar Conference Center, onJanuary 15, 16 and 17. The clinic is slated to movefrom Central California to Northern Californiarightin the middle of the redwoods!Benbow Inn in Garberville is the potential newsite for the WKGC West Coast Clinic for 2011.Watch for more information in future WTSDANewsletters.Submitted by,Meredyth Phillips, Dragon Heart TSD,Garberville, CAOctober 2009visit www.wtsda.com for world and regional information WTSDA News 9

he beginning is the end, which is really a new“Tbeginning.” I often heard myself say thisto my students, but rediscovered this concept on awhole new level! Tang Soo Do practitioners oftenfind themselves being revisited by things they havesaid and done. What is important, however, is thatthese “cycles” are recognized and valued.Upon receiving my Master’s belt at the RegionEight tournament, I immediately went to the backof the event floor to a privatecorner where Master ScottHomschek greeted me. Aswe spoke of the belt, hereferred to tying the belt as to display the red stripethroughout the knot. I practiced tying the belt ashe repeated the process for me. It didn’t hit meuntil days later that the first thing I had done as a“Master” was the first thing I did as a white belt, learn to tie the belt! The first class at my dojang after receiving mynew belt should have been like any other day. Iwalked in and changed into my dobahk. When Icame out to the floor I saw a familiar face sittingthere. It was a former student, but not just anystudent. Pat Williams was my first student that Ihad when I started teaching in New York State. Hewas in the military and separated from me since theRegion 9’s Spring Dan test was held at ValentinKarate’s Meriden School on February 7, 2009.In attendance was Janet Meegan, Karin Roumanis, and Jael Valentin testing for Sam Dan. MaribelRivera, Melissa Rodriguez, Jairo Velasquez, RobertBeres, Krisl Beres, Landon Bassett, and ThomasEsty tested for E Dan and Adam Sokolowski, AbeNeudorf, Selman Kolenovic, Philippe Recalt, AaronBarkasy, Steven Blasi, Tyler Sheldon, Stephen Lang,Ryiah Kahn, John Guzauckas II, Emily Rafala,Harrison Dent, Julia Vanasse, Nicholas Lawrence,Ryan Perrott, Angelique Lopez, Angelo Calandra,Robert Clarke, Alec Foxx, Harshul Khanna, TomRossi, Mike Rossi, Joemart Contreras, and MorganDent tested for Cho Dan.CYCLESYou may find, as I did, that the end ofone cycle is the beginning of another!Region 9 Dan Testfirst Gulf War in Iraq. I had not seen him in almost17 years. It did not take me long to discover thatthis was not only my first student as Cho Dan, butwas also my first new student (again) as Master.Shortly after these events I was reminiscing withsome old pictures of different Tang Soo moments.Among them was a picture of me and MasterBrian Fisher waiting in line to be promoted to ChoDan. Soon after this I made the monthly trip tothe Region Eight Instructor’sClub in Lancaster, PA. Welined up, and for the firsttime in almost 20 years Ifound myself standing in line next to Master Fisheragain. The “cycles” that I experienced were small innature, but huge in significance. Just as the presentmet the past with these events, so should the lessonsof today meet the lessons of the past. Completionsof cycles are a great time to examine things you havesaid and done in the past with today’s understanding.Even better, it is also a great time to say “where do Igo from here?” You may find, as I did, that the endof one cycle is the beginning of another!Submitted by,Master Michael A. Region 8 Western Zone championshipOn the morning of February 28, 2009,World Tang Soo Do practitioners fromthe Western Zone of Region 8 and somevisiting schools from Region 5 convergedinto Hopewell Memorial Junior High School tocompete in the annual Regional Championship. Weall traveled from near and far to this communitynorth of Pittsburgh, PA which was both comfortableand welcoming.Although the weather outside was unseasonablymild, the competition was predictably intense.Starting off and setting a pace that would continuethroughout the competition were the Black Belts. The junior divisions all the way through to thesenior divisions gave a showing of championshipstyle and technique that displayed commitment anddiscipline to Tang Soo Do that were apparent notonly in their “game faces” during competition, butin the smiles and shows of affection when the fiercecompetition ended.Following the Black Belt divisions, the OpeningCeremonies brought us together for introductions, presentations, and always inspiring words from ourGrandmaster Jae C. Improving Our Teaching: Learning StylesAs noted in Traditional Tang Soo DoVolume V, “the technical skills which youhave achieved are quite different from theskills needed to stand in front of a class asa teacher of our Art.” The more we understand thedifferences among learners, the better we can adjustour teaching to include these differences. LearningStyles Theory groups learners into three categories:Auditory, Kinesthetic/Tactile, and Visual. Auditorylearners are more attuned to sounds and preferhearing new information. Kinesthetic learners aremore physical and prefer using their bodies andsense of touch. Visual learners remember best whatthey see, including reading and images. There is nobest way to learn, and each person has an individualblend of these styles.Auditory Learners: Unlike other learning styles, they actually enjoy good lectures. They learn wellfrom “books on tape/CD.” They will learn theKorean language much better by hearing it thanby studying our manual. Musicians who “play byear” are usually auditory learners. If they are anextroverted auditory learner, they will learn best bytalking, especially repeating what you have said orLearning Styles Theorygroups learners intothree categories:Auditory, Kinesthetic/Tactile, and Visual.saying the steps of a given technique out loud as theyperform them with a partner. Extroverted auditorylearners are usually the students who ask the mostquestions, sometimes even answering the question asthey ask it. This may seem to be an interruption anddistraction, but it helps the auditory learner processthe information. Other learners will ask you to “dothe steps again” or to show you again, but auditorylearners will ask you to “say that again” or “explainthat again.” They tend to have less vivid dreams, perhaps only dreaming in black in white. Memoriesare also less clear, and they may play more likesoundtracks than pictures or video. These learnerscan be highly sensitive to noise and may need tostudy or write in complete silence or perhaps withambient music to block out auditory distractions. They also will greatly appreciate your playing musicduring the appropriate workout periods of yourclass. These are the learners that will benefit mostby putting Korean terms to music, rap, rhythm, orrhyme. As with some of the other styles, auditorylearners will learn best if they can gather around youwhile you demonstrate and explain a new technique.Remaining in our ranked opening/closing lines willmean that some auditory learners can’t hear youas well. It will also dissuade them from asking thequestion that is on the tip of their tongue. Allowthem to gather around you so that they can see yourlips moving in order to better understand what youare saying. It also is not enough to use statementslike “grab them here” or “do it like this.” Rememberthat they are not watching you as closely as theyare listening. Instead say “strike the inside of theirforearm with the lower half of your left knife hand”or “turn your punch over just before contact, strikingwith the first two large knuckles.” Do your bestto allow questions during the demonstration. It’susually easier for a teacher not to be interrupted andtake the questions at the end, but the informationwill be better processed if students are encouragedto ask questions throughout the lesson. Ask yourauditory learner to explain the technique back toyou as if they were the teacher.Kinesthetic Learners: Kinesthetic learners preferto get their bodies moving and involved and learnbest by doing the techniques. These are the studentsthat you will see moving their arms with you as youdemonstrate a self-defense technique. Sometimeskinesthetic learners have been mistaken as havinghyperactivity because they always seem to be moving(e.g. wiggling, bouncing their leg, dancing when inchoon bee ja seh, etc.) These learners think and learnbetter when playing with a stress ball, drumming, holding a bong, etc…They actually read better if12 WTSDA News October 2009

they can walk around with the book. Sometimeskinesthetic learners get into trouble for drawing ordoodling instead of taking notes, but this doodlingactually helps them to process information. Theseare the students that always volunteer to be yourdemonstration dummy. We must continue toexpand our knowledgeand strive to grow in ourskills as teachers; ourstudents are worth it.Remember that strong kinesthetic learners willget very little out of your words; they need to feelthe details of our techniques. If you talk to themfor more than a couple minutes, you are probablywasting your time. Say only what you need toand then get them moving. If you find yourselfrepeating the same correction to a student over andover, instead try physically making the correctionand then have the student repeat it. Physically twisthis shoulders or move his hand to where it needsto be, and then have him repeat it until he can feelthe proper position. Since kinesthetic learners maystruggle more with Korean language and history, have them study it while walking around the dojang.Encourage them to bring a pencil and take notes;even if they never read the notes, the writing of thewords will help them remember. Writing wordsin the air with a finger is also an effective learningtechnique.Visual Learners: These are the learners that ask:“could I see that again.” Their motto may be “showme, don’t tell me.” Visual learners will easily pick upon non-verbal cues (including a lack of confidencein their instructor). Obviously, visual learners learnwell from demonstrations and video. But they alsoare probably the best and fastest readers of the group.(Auditory learners will read much slower becausethey need to hear the words.) Visual learners willhave a much easier time learning the information forour written exam; if they study, they may have theability to close their eyes and picture a page from ourmanual, including how to spell Korean terms, dates, etc. Visual learners will have more vivid dreams, andtheir memories may play like a movie without thesoundtrack. They will benefit from being permittedto take notes, which allows them to see what you aresaying. When teaching visual learners it is critical thatyou show them everything clearly and accurately. Ifyou have a bad habit, (such as leaving your thumbsstick out) you may want to mention this before theystart copying you. With this group, it is “monkeysee, monkey do” so you better be careful with yourdemonstration. When you talk, try to relay mentalimages and pictures, visual metaphors that studentscan picture later. As with the auditory learners, itis best not to remain in our opening/closing linesfor demonstrations. Try to situate yourself towardthe middle of the room rather than in front of theclass. New teachers sometimes stay only in front ofthe class and may even move several feet away fromtheir students. This may be a defense mechanismthat helps with a teacher’s insecurities, but it is nothelpful for our students. In addition to being inthe middle of the group, allow and encourage yourstudents to move to find a position where they canclearly see you. After you demonstrate, turn andface the other direction and perform the techniqueagain making sure that everyone can see all thedetails. If we are to successfully reach all of ourstudents, we need to incorporate teaching methodsthat address a variety of learning styles, not just ourown style of learning. The art of teaching is notan easy art to master. We must continue to expandour knowledge and strive to grow in our skills asteachers; our students are worth it.Submitted by,Jason Fry, E DanPocono Tang Soo DoOctober 2009visit www.wtsda.com for world and regional information WTSDA News 13
