F1061 – Aspects of French Linguistics: One Language, Several Usages
The French language is composed of variations in its different usages, in France as
well as in Francophone countries. These variations can be seen in pronunciation
(phonetic variation), in grammar (morphological and syntactical variations), in the
vocabulary (lexical variation), and they depend on the geographical origin of the
speaker, her/his social status, and the context of communication. It is thus useful to
speak about French in terms of unity and variety, and to observe the existence of
several norms. This course will incorporate the study of analogous documents to
illustrate these different situations.
