Hospice Austin, under
the direction of Rev.
David Zuniga, Outreach
Coordinator, will
conduct the Stephen
Ministry Continuing
Education for the fall
on these Mondays: October
3, November 7
and December 5.
Dr. Zuniga is a writer, award-winning
high school teacher and sought-after
expert on Latino health care needs and
end-of-life care.
Even as research shows people are living
longer with the introduction of new
medical treatments, cultural attitudes toward
illness and dying remain barriers
to decisions regarding end-of-life care
Points from Parish Nurse Penny
In some ways it is hard to believe it has
been 10 years since the terrorist attacks
on 9/11/01. As you, I am able to remember
exactly what I was doing when I
heard. I was just coming into a routine
day of work at First Presbyterian, and Joy
came out of her office with a look of concern
instead of her usual smile. That day
has affected every American in some way.
There was much prayer sent up, songs
composed, hugs given and e-mails written.
There will be a Prayer Gathering (not
a political gathering) on Sunday, September
11, at 3 p.m. on the lawn of the
Williamson County Courthouse. It is
sponsored by the Georgetown Prayer
Network, Aglow of Georgetown and
“Cry Out America.” It won’t last long but
will be well worth your time.
Y O U T H M I N I S T R Y
Speaking of prayer: Did you know that
all Georgetown churches and their pastors
are prayed for on a regular basis by
the ecumenical Georgetown Prayer Network?
Did you know that First Presbyterian’s
Prayer Chain is constantly at work
praying? The Prayer Chain doesn’t just
pray once. They continue to pray for your
concerns. So, if you’d like them to pray,
drop a card in the offering plate or call
the church office.
September is a time of new beginnings,
a new season, a new school year. Maybe
it is time to start walking! I had a wonderful
note from a member of the congregation
who said she had started walking and
is seeing progress and a difference in her
life already! Remember that only 30 minutes
a day—even in 10-minute increments—
can make a difference in how you
feel now and years down the road.
Hospice Austin’s Rev. David Zuniga
to conduct Stephen Ministry programs
that could profoundly impact patient
treatment and mental wellness.
Dr. Zuniga is making strides in
breaking down such barriers through an
educational program offered at Hospice
Austin called “On Our Own Terms: Open
Conversations about the End of Life.”
The program enables Central Texans
to understand and openly discuss their
health care options through a series of
free, culturally aware seminars grounded
in the latest medical and psychological
research.
The First Presbyterian Church programs
are open to all who are interested
in learning more about palliative care,
artificial life-sustaining treatment, and advanced
directives. Greater program detail
will appear in the October, November and
December newsletters.
