A couple of notes about our worship in
September. The 10 th anniversary of
September 11, 2001, will be on a Sunday.
My sermon, “Ten Years After,” will
reflect on that tragic day and
the consequences. In our worship
on September 11, I would
like to recognize those who
have served in the wars of
Afghanistan and Iraq.
Those families have been
touched in important ways
and sacrificed much in the
service of our country. I hope
our veterans and their families
can be present as we express
our appreciation. I hope all of
us as God’s people can re-
day.
The church retreat will be taking place
September 23-25 at Mo-Ranch, led by Dr.
David Evans. This will be the
first of the nine church retreats
that I will be home for.
I will be preaching at
home on the 25 th . We will have
only one worship service that
day at 11:00 a.m. I hope my
8:30 friends will join us at
11:00 for the worship of God
and fellowship with one another!
Looking forward to a
good month with you!
Among Our People
Boldface indicates a member of First Presbyterian Church.
(The following paragraphs
were inadvertently left
out of Pastor Mike’s
column in the
August First Word.)
This week I looked over
my list of the weddings
that I have officiated at.
There are so many memories,
locations, fun
stories, family celebrations.
There was laughter,
lots of tears. These
were great days, memorable
days, joyful days....
Our joy is also full.
Our oldest child Jonathan
married Paige
Sartin on July 10. They
met last year when they
were both teaching at the
same school. They chose
to have a small wedding
with family and close
friends here in the Sanctuary.
Cindy enjoyed
being the mother of the
groom, Timothy and
Elizabeth were both in
the wedding party, and I
officiated. Family flew in
for the occasion. After
the wedding, we had a
wonderful reception at a
local bed and breakfast.
We had a great week of
festivities.
We welcome Paige
into our family. We also
welcome her two children,
two adorable boys,
Turner, 6, and Parker,
5. So Jonathan becomes a
step-Dad! This is a joyful
time for all of us.
Our family is blessed.
Sabbatical approved
for Dr. Roberts in 2012
The Session has approved seven weeks of
sabbatical leave for our pastor, Dr. Michael
Roberts, in 2012. Combined with his
accrued vacation and study leave, he will
be away from April 16-July 31. Mike’s last
long sabbatical was in 2002, 10 years ago.
He has been our pastor for 23 years this
month.
The church’s sabbatical leave policy
was established in 2000 and states: “The
sabbatical leave for the pastor will be
offered for the purpose of complete relaxation,
renewal or study. The pastor will
accrue one week of paid sabbatical leave
each year.”
The Session has also approved Dr.
David Evans as the church’s Acting Pastor/Head
of Staff while Mike is away.
David will be our speaker at the All-
Church Retreat this month and is currently
Interim Pastor at Marble Falls.

“Standards for ordained service reflect the church’s desire to submit joyfully
to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life.”
Constitutional
change for
ordination
The constitution of the
Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) has changed
in regard to standards
for ordination.
The section removed
stated: “Those who are
called to office in the
church are to lead a life
in obedience to Scripture
and in conformity
to the historic confessional
standards of the
church. Among these
standards is the requirement
to live either
in fidelity within the
covenant of marriage
between a man and a
woman, or chastity in
singleness. Persons
refusing to repent of
any self-acknowledged
practice which the
confessions call sin
shall not be ordained
and/or installed as
deacons, elders, or
ministers of the Word
and Sacrament.”
(continued in right-hand
column next page)
Dear Congregation:
The First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown
has always taken seriously the selection
of ordained leaders in our church. We
have always carefully considered a person’s
experiences, gifts, beliefs, and ethics
in his or her selection, understanding that
we all are dependent upon God’s grace for
salvation and service. We have always provided
thoughtful training of officer candidates
focused upon the vows of ordination.
Our Session makes the commitment to continue
these practices coupled with a more
thorough examination process by the Session
before ordination and installation of
new leaders.
On July 10, 2011, an amendment to the
constitution of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) to change the ordination standards
language from “fidelity and chastity” to
submitting “joyfully to the Lordship of
Jesus Christ in all aspects of life” was approved.
(See sidebar.)
This change came about when the
majority of the church’s 173 presbyteries
approved it. The commissioners to Presbytery
and General Assembly are one-half
elders and one-half pastors. Our congregation
is represented at Presbytery by our
pastor and the election of four ruling elders.
Our church government is Presbyterian,
literally a government by elders, both
ruling and teaching elders. Congregations
and presbyteries elect representatives to
“seek together to find and represent the
will of Christ.”
It is important to emphasize that the
ministries, missions, and staff of Presbytery
and General Assembly are not responsible
for this change. This comes as a result
of the nation’s elders and pastors voting
in the governing bodies of the church. To
further clarify, the changes discussed here
are specific to the selection and examination
of potential candidates for service as
elected officers in the local church and
should not be confused as requirements
for general membership.
This change has caused significant
controversy in our Presbytery, in our denomination,
and to some degree in our
congregation. This is not a new discussion.
Our denomination, like several
other denominations, has debated who
acceptable candidates for ordination are
for over 30 years. In 1997, our denomination
approved the “requirement to live
either in fidelity within the covenant of
marriage between a man and a woman,
or chastity in singleness.” Since that time,
there have been four different attempts
to change or delete this language.
Many in the denomination believe
that this year’s amendment now allows
the ordination of sexually active gays
and lesbians. We do not think that is necessarily
the case. A congregation may
continue to consider sexual activity outside
marriage between a man and a
woman as impermissible for its officers.
This change in the constitution does not
mandate or require the ordination of
practicing gay and lesbian deacons, elders,
and ministers. There will now be
no stated sexual behavior standard in the
constitution for persons in church leadership;
this was the situation in our
church before 1997. The ethical emphasis
now is broader than before. There is
a renewed emphasis on “living responsibly
in the personal, family, vocational.
. .and social relationships of life”
(G.1.0304).
Those of us who hold a traditional
perspective on these matters believe we
can continue to hold to our beliefs, that
we are not required to compromise our
convictions, and we can still be guided
by our interpretation of the Scriptures
and the confessions in our selection and
examination of ordained leaders.
The authority for ordaining elders and
deacons remains fully vested in the local
congregation. The new language calls the
ordaining body to be guided by Scripture
and the confessions in applying ordination
standards to individual candidates.
The congregation retains the authority to
determine who will serve as officers. A
congregation cannot be forced to ordain
or receive pastors or elders or deacons of
whom they do not approve. And no congregation
or presbytery is required to elect
a person to serve as deacon, ruling elder,
or teaching elder simply because that person
has been so ordained at another time
or by another session or presbytery.
The Session, as always, has the responsibility
of examining potential officers.
The change mandates that the session or
presbytery examination shall include, at
a minimum, a determination that the candidate
is both able and committed to fulfill
all the requirements expressed in the
ordination questions every church officer
must answer prior to ordination or installation.
The session or presbytery has a
positive obligation under the terms of this
paragraph to assess a candidate’s commitment
to these standards, including whether
a candidate’s beliefs and/or manner
of life are sufficiently in accord with these
standards as to make it reasonably likely
that he or she will be able to meet them.
Although we yearn for the peace and
unity of Christ’s church, there is a possibility
of division within our church’s
denomination. Our Session has great concern
for our congregation, our Presbytery
and our denomination, the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.). We must not fall victim
to the strife that this continued debate will
engender. The ebb and flow of this debate—which
produced the 1997 position
of “fidelity or chastity” and now its elimination—stirs
heated controversy that only
serves to further erode the foundation of
the church. The new language simply
takes the spotlight off of one aspect of life
and points it to “all aspects of life.” Our
form of government is “majority rule” and
this passage allows us to continue our
same process for nomination of officers.
Taking sides is not the answer. Staying the
course in a denomination that is reformed
and is committed to “reforming according
to the Word of God and the call of the
Spirit” will always allow for this type of
dialogue. We can be assured it will continue.
Presbyterians have dealt with many
matters of controversy through the centuries.
We are grateful for our tradition
which allows us to work together toward
the “peace, unity, and purity” of the
church. Being Presbyterian means that we
allow each other to hold different viewpoints
and that it is our privilege to enjoy
unity without total agreement. “God
alone is Lord of the conscience.” Being
Presbyterian means that although we have
committed to unity, we have a right to respectfully
state differing opinions from
the majority. Being Presbyterian means
that when we agree to disagree, we have
an orderly way of doing so even though
the process at times can seem slow or difficult.
Being Presbyterian means that we
are called to God’s mission. We aim to
proclaim the gospel, worship the living
God, grow in the faith, and serve one another
and the world. Let us be about doing
our work.
We call upon the congregation we
serve to participate in God’s mission, pray
for guidance and to “lead a life worthy of
the calling to which you have been called, with
all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another in love, making every
effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit
in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1-3).
We are on a campaign this fall with our
education ministries. In grateful response
to all that we have been given, we say:
“Jesus, use me, please!” Through worship
and classes, and being in community, we
learn the stories of those whom God called
to service, we learn what gifts we have to
be used and where they are needed in the
world; we learn what it means to be a disciple
of Jesus Christ and why we are grateful.
Come learn with us.
Your high school Sunday School teachers
(returning for their third year of team
teaching in a row!) are Fred Hilgeman,
Courtney Root and Lael Winkstern. We
consider it a privilege to journey with our
youth through these important years of
their lives and enjoy connecting with the
students as much as we do teaching them
and learning from them. So, what will we
be learning?
We will begin the year with a fourweek
study of the Bible, considering questions
like Where did the Bible come from? and
Do we take the Bible literally? A provoking
six-week series on forgiveness will follow.
This series beginning with God’s love for
us takes us on a journey of our own mistakes,
where we need forgiveness and just
how tough it sometimes is to forgive others
even though that is what we are called
to do. The curriculum for both of these
studies comes from Faith Questions, lessons
published especially for youth in the
PC(USA).
Teachers for 2011-12: We have a great
team but are still a little short. We still need
three teachers. Call Joy at 863-3381 if you
think God would like to use you to teach.
Please keep these teachers and the students
they will teach in your prayers:
ADULT ELECTIVE
“Re-reading I and II Samuel,” taught
by Dr. David Jensen, Sanctuary
The books, I and II Samuel, contain
some of the most unforgettable stories in
the Old Testament, from David and Goliath
to David’s loss of the throne to his
rebellious son Absalom. This series invites
participants to re-read these familiar
stories and explore their implications for
understanding God’s activity in the world,
human behavior and political affairs.
SURVEYORS
“I Samuel,” taught by Mike FitzGerald,
Room 207
Come join us in a brief historical explanation
of the peoples and nations surrounding
the Israelites during this epoch
and our study of the first of the Books of
Samuel. I Samuel records the transition
history of the Israelites in the land of
Canaan as they move from the rule of
judges to being a unified nation under
kings. Samuel emerges as the last judge,
and he anoints the first two kings, Saul
and David. The book starts with the miraculous
birth of Samuel in answer to his
mother’s earnest prayer, and ends with the
tragic story of Saul, who did not put God
first. Here was a man who had it all—
honor, authority, riches, good looks and
more. Yet he died in despair, terrified of
his enemies and knowing he had failed
his nation, his family and his God.
CORNERSTONE
“Racing with Jeremiah,” taught by
Sam Matthews, Room 107
Jeremiah is the Hebrew prophet about
whom many of us don’t know much, but
he is one of God’s most outstanding servants.
He overcomes his shyness to say
what God tells him to say—a message no
one wants to hear— and act as God tells
him to—actions that only produce enemies—for
more than 40 years. In Jeremiah’s
world everything that can go
wrong does go wrong, yet he remains firm
and stands alone for his God. Sam first
presented this course last spring to the
Jubilation Ringers
Adult Elective Class. The Cornerstone
class invited Sam to do a repeat performance
so they could hear the story of
Jeremiah. If you missed it last spring, you
can come be with the Cornerstone class
and learn how God used Jeremiah.
HOMEBUILDERS
“The Christian Story” (by Martin Marty),
taught by Karen McClure, Room 112
This six-week series “takes an overview
of church history and uses it to probe
the spiritual pilgrimage of the various eras
of the church and their relationship to our
individual and corporate life today.”
Barbara Brown Taylor’s An Altar in the
Logos has Welcome Back Backwards Night
for Children
in Kindergarten
through 6 th Grade
Noah’s Ark
Noah’s Ark is off to a
great start! The crew is
ready to get sailing for a
year full of learning and
growing. Please keep us
in your prayers as we
embark on our journey.
We are thankful for each
and every child God has
entrusted to us.
I hope you have all decided to JUMP into
FPC and Logos this year! The Logos team
JUMP’d into our annual “Jumpstart” August
31 and what a great semester we have
planned! Our first official Logos begins
September 7 with the theme “thgin
sdrawkcab kcaB emocleW,” that is, “Welcome
Back backwards night”! Everyone
is encouraged to dress backwards and
walk backwards, and it’s rumored that
dinner will be served backwards!
Many of you know that Logos is our
mid-week ministry for children in kindergarten
thru 6 th grade. It bridges the gap
from Sunday to Sunday and serves to
build relationships among children,
adults and God. We meet weekly on
Wednesday from 4:45 - 7:15 p.m. to be in
community together.
Each week we have a theme and everyone
is encouraged, but not required,
to come dressed for the theme. All of the
children participate in a worship skills
class where they learn how to participate
in worship as well as how to make a “joyful
noise.” Our Logos Choir will be leading
in worship on Sunday, October 2, at
the 11 a.m. service.
Our dinner time is 5:30, when we all
come together to enjoy a family-style dinner
and game. Our wonderful dinners are
prepared by our amazing cook teams. We
have four cook teams that prepare our
meals once a month. These cook teams are
made up of wonderful volunteers, most
of whom do not have children in our program,
and one made up entirely of men!
After dinner, we break up into groups
by grade level for our Bible study class.
We have several amazing volunteers who
lead these classes. Here again, most do not
have children in the program.
We also have two nights a semester
called “Fifth Wednesday Fun,” and these
nights are all about building and strengthening
relationships! These nights are
theme-oriented and have ranged from
“Mad Science Night,” where the children
got to participate in hands-on experiments,
to “Wild Winter Olympics,” when
we held the Winter Olympics Logos-style.
As I have often said, “Logos is the most
fun you can have on a Wednesday Night,”
so if you are looking to JUMP into FPC
ministry this year, I encourage you to consider
Logos. We have a number of volunteer
opportunities that range from a
weekly commitment to a monthly commitment,
or even just special events. Contact
me at kathleen.wenzel@fpcgeorge
town.org or 658-2719 if you would like additional
information. Or stop by on a
Wednesday evening and join us for dinner
(reservations needed).
Big Hearts Bunch launches in September
Logos—as well as the Mission Committee—has
been working to get children involved
in mission. I think we would all
agree that developing a caring attitude
starts early in life, and caring for
others is something that Jesus
and the church want us to do. I
believe our children have big
hearts and would love an opportunity
to serve their community.
The difficulty lies in how to
get the kids physically involved
rather than just bringing money. However,
at the APCE conference in New Mexico, I
was given a great idea and now I would
like to start the First Presbyterian Big
Hearts Bunch! It’s a kid’s club that will
meet quarterly to have fun together and
help others.
Big Hearts Bunch is for children in 3 rd
- 6 th grades who will participate in a
“hands-on” mission activity quarterly.
Our first event will be Sunday, September
18, from 12 noon - 3 p.m. to
share lunch, learn about our
local firemen, bake cookies and
create thank-you cards to deliver
to a few local firehouses.
Parents are welcome to attend.
We will need a little help,
so we will invite two to four
parents to assist at each event.
I hope you will be willing to take a turn.
Our next event—in the planning
stage—will be December 11. Feel free to
contact me with questions or concerns at
kathleen.wenzel@fpcgeorgetown.org or
658-2719. Thanks for your support!
Church humor
One Sunday after
church, a mom asked her
very young daughter
what the Sunday School
lesson was about. Her
daughter answered,
“Don’t be scared, you’ll
get your quilts.”
Needless to say, the
mom was perplexed.
Later in the week she
saw the Sunday School
teacher and asked her
what the Sunday lesson
was about.
The teacher said, “Be
not afraid, thy comforter
is coming.”
Change is in the air! This time of year always
brings about new opportunities as
our students are starting back to school.
With our Wednesday night Bible studies
under way, we’re off to a good start for a
full semester.
Our Sunday evening activities are getting
a make-over, as our normal SNL is
no longer the norm. We will be mixing up
our activities: from lunch after church to
game nights in the youth room to special
events off-site to experiential worship
with a prayer labyrinth.
The fall semester is always an exciting
time in our youth ministry, and we
look forward to all the ways God will reveal
Himself to us and draw us closer to
Him through His Word, by serving others,
and with a little bit of fun!
God bless. —David Lee & Sarah Hulsey
CROP Hunger Walk 2011: Coming October 23
• By providing funds for self-help
projects, people are trained and assisted
to help themselves.
• It supports the work of Church World
Services (a cooperative ministry of 36
Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations)
in meeting human needs
and nurturing self-reliance in more than
80 countries.
The CROP Hunger Walk is coming again
to First Presbyterian Church on Sunday,
October 23. This makes the 21 st consecutive
year that our church has supported
the walk. Last year we had 88 walkers who
raised $12,468, placing us first in Texas
and 15 th in the nation for all the churches
that participate in the 1,600+ community
walks across America. Congratulations to
everyone (walkers, sponsors and supporters)
for your accomplishments.
This year, our goal is for 100 FPC walkers
to be on one or more of the three San
Gabriel Park trails in Georgetown that
Sunday afternoon—making a difference
towards alleviating hunger locally and
around the world, helping fund disaster
relief programs and providing for selfhelp
projects and refugee resettlement
programs nationally and internationally.
Walk recruitment begins September 4
after each Sunday service and continues
each Sunday thereafter until the day of
the walk. You will also be able to obtain
CROP Walker envelopes from the church
office during the week, or by contacting
What’s special about CROP Walk?
• More than 1,600 communities have
them in the U.S. throughout the year.
• They provide the opportunity for each
of us to respond to Christ’s message to
feed His sheep and help the least of His
children in the world.
• 25% of the funds raised will remain in
Georgetown and go to The Caring Place
and Meals on Wheels.
Is there a need?
• More than 800 million people—one of
every six people in the world—are undernourished
worldwide. That’s about equal
to the population of the western hemisphere.
• 1.1 billion people—one in every six
people in the world—are forced to survive
on less than a dollar a day.
• Almost 50% (2.8 billion) live on less
than $2 a day.
• Every day, almost 16,000 children—one
child every five seconds—die from hunger-related
causes
• One in five children in the U.S. is born
into poverty. One in seven has no health
insurance.
Who me?
In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus tells us that we
are to help the least in His creation. The
CROP Hunger Walk is a significant way
for each of us to respond to His words.
Church Banner
This church banner,
made by Nadine Tanner,
hangs in the Fellowship
Hall-Worship Center
during Pentecost. The
liturgical color for Pentecost
is red, a symbol of
blood and fire. White,
gold, orange and rust
colored images and the
words “Come Holy
Spirit” appear on the
banner’s red background.
The Easter season transitions
into Pentecost, the
day we celebrate the gift
of the Holy Spirit and the
birth of the church.

You can be like the “Cereal Angel”
These days it seems that every time we
turn around we are being asked for money
or goods. Well, today is no exception. You
may remember a few months
ago I brought to your attention
the fact that someone brought
four boxes of cereal every week
and put them in The Caring
Place container by the church
office. Well, this week I found
out quite by accident who was doing that.
I will never tell who is responsible, but
what an excellent idea this is. It is good
for several reasons:
• If you do it every week it becomes a
habit and you don’t forget.
• You can choose something that is always
needed.
• You can budget for it and donate before
the money is all used up.
Think about it. I plan on following the
example of our “Cereal Angel.” You can
choose any one of the items listed and
The Caring Place is looking for volunteers
for the following positions:
• Switchboard Operator – Shifts are available
Monday thru Friday. Shifts are from
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 12:30 to 4
p.m. Ability to handle four incoming
phone lines. Responsible for answering
and transferring calls to correct person.
Excellent customer service skills needed.
make that your “thing”: cereal, tomato
products, toothpaste and tooth brushes,
canned vegetables other than green beans,
boxed dinners, spaghetti
sauce, macaroni, sugar, flour,
cake mixes or anything else
you might use yourself at
home.
The new building is moving
on quite nicely and will be
able to serve the huge numbers of people
who are coming in to The Caring Place
for help. During the month of July this
year there were 47 more families served
than in July 2010.
Lastly, because of the increased number
of families to be served, there is an
even greater need for more volunteers.
Give Rita Turner a call at 512-869-4735. To
find out what volunteer opportunities are
available, see below or check the bulletin
board outside the office. There is something
for everyone. —Jenny Carswell
Mission InSight distributes
donated prescription glasses
Imagine yourself living in an underdeveloped
country with poor eyesight and no
hope for improvement!
For more than 10 years, vision has been
improved for many people through donations
of used prescription glasses. Your
donations may be put in the “Mission
InSight” box outside the church office.
After being cleaned, these glasses are
distributed by professionals on medical
mission trips sponsored by MEDICO.
Breakfast raises funds
for Meals on Wheels
Thank you, thank you!
First Presbyterian is truly a caring
church!
The 11 churches that provide volunteers
to deliver Meals on Wheels contributed
almost $2,000 through the recent
Pancake Breakfast benefit. Of that
amount, our church gave $567. Wow!
On behalf of our church’s 35 volunteers
who regularly deliver meals, and
the 120 clients who receive a hot meal
each day, I again thank you.
Mission Sewing
welcomes guest
In August, we welcomed
special guest Edna
Malone to our meeting.
Her seamstress talents
were put to good use
when she helped sew
labels on afghans and
quilts.
A beautiful crocheted
blanket and colorful
quilts were displayed
and admired at the
meeting.
Our group will help
honor and support
the creative talents of
Dorothy Barrett during
the September Show ‘N
Share time.
Our next meeting will
be Friday, September 9,
at 10 a.m. in Room 111.
For several years, groups and individuals
in our church have been involved as
volunteers and supporters of the Williamson
County Children’s Advocacy
Center (WCCAC), a local mission
of FPC.
WCCAC is a non-profit organization
that provides help to
abused children, non-offending
family members, and professionals
dedicated to the intervention, investigation,
prosecution and treatment
options related to child abuse cases.
The center offers a child-friendly
atmosphere in which children and
teens can talk about alleged abuse
and/or neglect. Working closely with
law enforcement and Child Protective Services,
staff conduct forensic interviews
and medical exams, and do follow-up
counseling for victims of abuse—all free
of charge.
FPC people have volunteered, or are
currently volunteering, their time as frontoffice
receptionist. The Mission Sewing
group knits or crochets blankets and
afghans for stuffed animals and donates
them to the center’s young clients. Most
women’s circles have held meetings at
and toured the center. The center
serves more than 650 children or
teens per year. This may be just the
tip of the iceberg when it comes
to actual abuse victims.
For information on volunteer
opportunities at the center, give
me a call at (512) 635-1194. You
or your group can also arrange
for a tour of the facility (located at 1811
Southeast Inner Loop, Georgetown) by
calling me. Read more about WCCAC by
Church humor
The boy listened closely
as the pastor read the
Bible. “May I ask a
question?”’ the boy said.
“Sure. Go ahead. Ask
your question,” replied
the pastor.
“Well, the Bible says
that the children of Israel
crossed the Red Sea; the
children of Israel built
the temple; the children
of Israel did this; and the
children of Israel did
that. Didn’t the grownups
ever do anything?”

Points from Parish Nurse Penny
In some ways it is hard to believe it has
been 10 years since the terrorist attacks
on 9/11/01. As you, I am able to remember
exactly what I was doing when I
heard. I was just coming into a routine
day of work at First Presbyterian, and Joy
came out of her office with a look of concern
instead of her usual smile. That day
has affected every American in some way.
There was much prayer sent up, songs
composed, hugs given and e-mails written.
There will be a Prayer Gathering (not
a political gathering) on Sunday, September
11, at 3 p.m. on the lawn of the
Williamson County Courthouse. It is
sponsored by the Georgetown Prayer
Network, Aglow of Georgetown and
“Cry Out America.” It won’t last long but
will be well worth your time.
Y O U T H M I N I S T R Y
Speaking of prayer: Did you know that
all Georgetown churches and their pastors
are prayed for on a regular basis by
the ecumenical Georgetown Prayer Network?
Did you know that First Presbyterian’s
Prayer Chain is constantly at work
praying? The Prayer Chain doesn’t just
pray once. They continue to pray for your
concerns. So, if you’d like them to pray,
drop a card in the offering plate or call
the church office.
September is a time of new beginnings,
a new season, a new school year. Maybe
it is time to start walking! I had a wonderful
note from a member of the congregation
who said she had started walking and
is seeing progress and a difference in her
life already! Remember that only 30 minutes
a day—even in 10-minute increments—
can make a difference in how you
feel now and years down the road.
Hospice Austin’s Rev. David Zuniga
to conduct Stephen Ministry programs
that could profoundly impact patient
treatment and mental wellness.
Dr. Zuniga is making strides in
breaking down such barriers through an
educational program offered at Hospice
Austin called “On Our Own Terms: Open
Conversations about the End of Life.”
The program enables Central Texans
to understand and openly discuss their
health care options through a series of
free, culturally aware seminars grounded
in the latest medical and psychological
research.
The First Presbyterian Church programs
are open to all who are interested
in learning more about palliative care,
artificial life-sustaining treatment, and advanced
directives. Greater program detail
will appear in the October, November and
December newsletters.
