6 F I R S T W O R D Joy Bedford, Education Director joy.bedford@yahoo.com Office Hours: Tuesday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. TRAINING (Cross Training) Sunday School Assembly Time Cross Training begins August 28 at 9:30 a.m. in FH. Children ages 4 years through 12 th grade meet together at 9:30 for singing, praying, praising and JUMPing. Our older students will then get the younger ones to their Sunday School classes by 9:50. 3 rd graders receive Bibles It is our tradition to present Bibles to our active 3 rd graders. This year we will present Bibles during the 11:00 worship service September 18. We need your help. If you have a 3 rd grader and he or she is not listed below, please call Joy Bedford at 863-3381 and let her know so we can have a Bible ready for your child. We are on a campaign this fall with our education ministries. In grateful response to all that we have been given, we say: “Jesus, use me, please!” Through worship and classes, and being in community, we learn the stories of those whom God called to service, we learn what gifts we have to be used and where they are needed in the world; we learn what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and why we are grateful. Come learn with us. Your high school Sunday School teachers (returning for their third year of team teaching in a row!) are Fred Hilgeman, Courtney Root and Lael Winkstern. We consider it a privilege to journey with our youth through these important years of their lives and enjoy connecting with the students as much as we do teaching them and learning from them. So, what will we be learning? We will begin the year with a fourweek study of the Bible, considering questions like Where did the Bible come from? and Do we take the Bible literally? A provoking six-week series on forgiveness will follow. This series beginning with God’s love for us takes us on a journey of our own mistakes, where we need forgiveness and just how tough it sometimes is to forgive others even though that is what we are called to do. The curriculum for both of these studies comes from Faith Questions, lessons published especially for youth in the PC(USA). Teachers for 2011-12: We have a great team but are still a little short. We still need three teachers. Call Joy at 863-3381 if you think God would like to use you to teach. We will expect miracles, give up on the perfect holiday, explore God’s scandalous love for us and check out what’s on Jesus’s wish list for us. Adult Sunday School: 9:40 a.m. each Sunday ADULT ELECTIVE “Re-reading I and II Samuel,” taught by Dr. David Jensen, Sanctuary The books, I and II Samuel, contain some of the most unforgettable stories in the Old Testament, from David and Goliath to David’s loss of the throne to his rebellious son Absalom. This series invites participants to re-read these familiar stories and explore their implications for understanding God’s activity in the world, human behavior and political affairs. SURVEYORS “I Samuel,” taught by Mike FitzGerald, Room 207 Come join us in a brief historical explanation of the peoples and nations surrounding the Israelites during this epoch and our study of the first of the Books of Samuel. I Samuel records the transition history of the Israelites in the land of Canaan as they move from the rule of judges to being a unified nation under kings. Samuel emerges as the last judge, and he anoints the first two kings, Saul and David. The book starts with the miraculous birth of Samuel in answer to his mother’s earnest prayer, and ends with the tragic story of Saul, who did not put God first. Here was a man who had it all— honor, authority, riches, good looks and more. Yet he died in despair, terrified of his enemies and knowing he had failed his nation, his family and his God. CORNERSTONE “Racing with Jeremiah,” taught by Sam Matthews, Room 107 Jeremiah is the Hebrew prophet about whom many of us don’t know much, but he is one of God’s most outstanding servants. He overcomes his shyness to say what God tells him to say—a message no one wants to hear— and act as God tells him to—actions that only produce enemies—for more than 40 years. In Jeremiah’s world everything that can go wrong does go wrong, yet he remains firm and stands alone for his God. Sam first presented this course last spring to the Jubilation Ringers Adult Elective Class. The Cornerstone class invited Sam to do a repeat performance so they could hear the story of Jeremiah. If you missed it last spring, you can come be with the Cornerstone class and learn how God used Jeremiah. HOMEBUILDERS “The Christian Story” (by Martin Marty), taught by Karen McClure, Room 112 This six-week series “takes an overview of church history and uses it to probe the spiritual pilgrimage of the various eras of the church and their relationship to our individual and corporate life today.” Homebuilders is a class for adults in the family-building stage of life. Women’s Mid-week Bible Study: An educational opportunity for women Women’s Bible group to focus on Barbara Brown Taylor book Barbara Brown Taylor’s An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith will be the topic for the Women’s Mid-week Bible Study group beginning Wednesday, September 28. The author promises to make you see the world in a new way, finding grace in even the smallest detail, helping bring conscious awareness to your every day. Learn how the practice of blessings will help you give thoughtful prayer to those you love and even some you will never meet. In her critically acclaimed Leaving Church, Dr. Taylor, a Presbyterian pastor, wrote about leaving the full-time ministry to become a professor, a decision that stretched the boundaries of her faith. In this follow-up book, she shares how she learned to encounter God beyond the walls of any church. Contact Joy Bedford (863-3381) if you would like to join this class. Books are in her office. This group will meet at 12 noon in Room 112. No meeting is held on the 3 rd Wednesday of each month.
