When discussing our increasing use of
technology we tend to use Marshall McLuhan’s
well-known term, the global village. It seems
to be a utopian ideal which some believe may
overcome what Geoffrey Blainey called the
tyranny of distance. What is a global village,
but the coming together of those separated by
distance? DECV has quietly been pioneering
this movement for many years. I currently
have students who are living in places such as
Taiwan, the Philippines and China, as well as
students who live just down the road. DECV
and mainstream schools use the same VELS
and VCAA Study Designs to develop all
curricula and to assess student work. I have
found the comprehensive course booklets
and other materials used by students very
impressive. Every course is either maintained
or rewritten every semester, with special
attention given to literacy, numeracy, and
individual learning styles.
As part of our centenary celebrations, the
booklet Across the Distance – 1909-2009:
Celebrating 100 Years of the Distance Education
Centre will also be launched. Written by
former teacher Jenny Campbell, painstaking
research has provided us with fascinating
documentation, letters and photographs
that chart DECV’s growth from its small
beginnings to the present day.

who would like to build a career in teacher education in the School of
Education. To support your career change we have a four-year, full-time
scholarship for a research Masters or PhD study in the area of primary
mathematics education.
Requirements: A high standard of academic excellence in your initial
teaching degree/qualification and evidence of further professional learning
and effective classroom practice. Preference will be given to applicants
