70 Nov 09 Xxxx Regional Roundup Good news from around the state Compiled by Tina Luton Hume All 52 students from Willowmavin PS had a glimpse of the determination, hard work and dedication required to become a professional dancer, when they visited the Australian Ballet School. Del Durrant, artistic activities coordinator at Willowmavin PS, said the visit gave the students a wider appreciation of the arts, not only for recreation and enjoyment, but as possible career choices. “The social experience with the artistic, creative children of the ballet school was just wonderful for our youngsters – the trip to city by bus is an exciting adventure in itself,” Mrs Durrant said. Australian Ballet School director Marilyn Rowe welcomed the visit as a wonderful opportunity to introduce young people to the world of dance. “We were delighted to have students from Willowmavin PS. The visit not only gave them an insight into elite classical ballet training, it will also gave them the opportunity to meet other young people who have already made significant career choices at an early age.” Northern Metropolitan Some of the children at Eltham College Kids Child Care and Kindergarten at Laurimar may dream of being firefighters when they are older after a recent visit from Wollert CFA. Firefighters came to the centre as part of their community education program and gave a fun and informative talk about what it is like to be a firefighter and also the dangers associated with fire. The children got to dress up in hardhats and jackets and, as a special treat, senior lieutenant Warrick Andrew let each child have a turn on the fire engine and use the hose. Barwon South West Cobden Technical School is still celebrating after securing the winner’s trophy in the 2009 Maroondah Grand Prix. This annual event aims to give young people an introduction to the automotive industry while promoting teamwork and a greater understanding of design, mathematics, communication and technology, while considering the impact on the environment and society. Primary and secondary schools from across Victoria competed in the six-hour trial, which was conducted at an official driver-training complex on a challenging 1.4km circuit reflecting ‘real world’ conditions. Cobden once again contested the hybrid-powered section, with all three vehicles – Night Rider, Electric Storm and Road Runner – taking out first, second and third placing. “This year Cobden’s race team expanded from two to three hybrid cars and we gained successful placings in all events contested. This certainly makes the program very rewarding for both the school, parents and our students,” said automotive teacher and energy car expert Chris Brooks.
