Small Company Membership
Growing value,
growing reputation

Foreword from the
Chairman & Chief Executive
Since 2007, Scotland’s food and drink industry has been flourishing. Driven
by the extraordinary skill, talent and entrepreneurial flair that lies at the
heart of our industry, sales of Scottish products at home and abroad have
grown beyond any of our estimations. This has all helped develop Scotland’s
reputation as a Land of Food and Drink, and foster a renewed food culture in
this country.
We are proud that Scotland Food & Drink is an organisation at the heart of
this success. Our organisation was once just an aspiration. That was until
the main representative bodies covering food, drink, fishing and farming
came together and expressed a collective desire to work together to achieve
the potential of our sector. Five years on, the industry has a single strategy,
a single action plan and a collaborative model, working hand in hand with
the public sector.
Critically though, the organisation is a membership body, here to support
our members’ businesses. We are the industry’s voice and we have
committed ourselves to work tirelessly to create the operating environment
for our food and drink producers to prosper.
We have reviewed what we do as an organisation and what we deliver,
based on conversations with our members. We know there are distinct
requirements for support for smaller companies in Scotland, from tackling
distribution challenges to building new customers. We will focus on these to
help grow your business, support emerging new brands and to ultimately
strengthen your foothold in a growing market. This revitalised membership
package is one we know we can deliver for you.
The journey since 2007 has been exciting; but in many ways, with the strong
and unique platform we have developed, our journey has only just begun.
Support us, work with us and together we can be proud of a sector that is
growing in value and growing in reputation. We can’t do it without you.
Ray Jones
Chairman
Chief Executive

The industry’s voice to Government
With a close working relationship with Scottish Government Ministers and officials,
its enterprise agencies and regulators, Scotland Food & Drink plays a pivotal role in
representing the views of the industry. We are uniquely placed to influence for the
better the operating environment for smaller food and drink companies.
The organisation now advises Government on how best to support and grow the
sector and, working closely with our members, we highlight the issues that need to
be tackled.
If you have issues that concern you or you believe need to be addressed, get involved
with the organisation and we will take your voice to the key decision makers.
Helping you grow your
business in the UK
As part of a membership organisation,
you need to feel the direct benefit of
membership in your own business.
Our Access to Markets programme has
been a flagship project over the last
few years. It has worked directly with
the major retailers and food service
companies to build new relationships
between them and our members. From
hugely successful Meet the Buyer events,
to more intense Supplier Development
Programmes and presence at the
major exhibitions, our members have
benefitted from millions of pounds
worth of additional sales. Small
companies have been able to make that
next step in their growth.
Helping to grow your
business abroad
Scottish Development International acts
as the international arm of Scotland
Food & Drink. Our international strategy
sets out clear opportunities in these
markets and we are now working with the
industry bodies that specifically cover
red meat, salmon, seafood and whisky
to develop even closer working to exploit
the opportunities that clearly exist. We
have small company members that have
begun their businesses with a stall at a
farmers market but, with support, are
now exporting overseas.
Learning from others,
developing best
practice
One of the key benefits of Scotland Food
& Drink membership is the opportunity
to meet and learn from other businesses
in the sector. We host events throughout
the year where companies can interact
with each other. We also host events
which allow members to make the
most of the opportunities developing
in the sector, from innovative routes to
funding and investment to cutting edge,
emerging technology in the industry.
The network of Food Forums, run in
conjunction with Scottish Enterprise, are
a key hub for smaller businesses.
However, it’s not just about the big
customers. It is also about building a local
food network, developing relationships in
your area, with everyone from the smaller
food outlets, to local chefs and popular
tourism destinations.
This all represents why Scotland Food & Drink
exists and what we do. We are here to forge a
successful, profitable and sustainable future
for our members’ businesses with our partners.
In so doing, the nation’s food and drink sector
will go from strength to strength and our
reputation as a Land of Food and Drink will
be cemented.
However, we know that delivering specific
service to you is crucial too. So read on to hear
about the thousands of pounds worth of benefits
