NSW/ACT STATE SKIPPING CHAMPIONSHIPS 26-27 May - Ryde YMCA - This year’s competition was bigger and tougher than last year. SGCS was the largest team there with twenty students from Middle School, two from Senior School and twenty from Junior School. It was a great experience to see all the skippers from NSW and the ACT meet and share their skipping skills. We also got to see the top Australian skippers and a World Champion showed us their skipping routines which were just amazing. Our team received a lot of positive comments regarding our smiles and passion for skipping. I would like to say a big thank you to: • Mrs Kosteski, Mrs Norman, Mrs Clark, Mrs Douglas, • Mrs Madden and Mr Payne for their time and effort organising our new team shirts, fundraising and providing lights to practice in the dark. • To parents for their support and encouragement. • To Miss Henderson and Mrs Allum and the other teachers for their help with supervision and encouragement. This wouldn't have been possible without Mrs Binns who facilitated practices every time we asked and organised absolutely everything from costumes to rope malfunctions. We certainly looked better this year in our sparkly outfits. By Josephine Anugerah The results from the competition were: JN Crew: Nathan Chang, Lucy Benn, Jacob Madden, Joshua Madden - 4th in 15+ teams 4 person freestyle Chloe Tan & Julia Kasses: 3rd in 2x2 double Middle School under relay Revelation Ashley Kasper, Alexandra Clark, Jessica Anderson & Laura Douglas: 2nd in 12-14 teams 4 person freestyle JPCopycats Jessica Payne, Josephine Anugerah, Phoebe Au and Katrina Wong: 2nd in Double Dutch pairs freestyle Lydia Chang 3rd in the 9 years female 30sec speed, Thomas Norman 3rd in the 9-10 yrs old individual male freestyle and 3rd overall Nathan Chang 3rd in the 14+ individual male 30sec speed, and the 3 min speed and the individual freestyle and 3rd overall Most valued team player awards went to: Nathan Chang, Jessica Payne and Josephine Anugerah. In the middle of what is a particularly busy time of year, we celebrated with Mrs Kidd the imminent arrival of her baby and welcomed Mrs Harrington to 6K. A transition period allowed students in Year 6 to ease into this change of staff with confidence and renewed expectations for their learning for the remainder of Year 6. We are thankful that Mrs Harrington has joined our team. She brings with her a wealth of expertise and extensive experience in working with students and mentoring staff. The overnight excursion to Canberra planned for Week 7, has meant that students and staff are actively focused on ensuring they are well prepared to take advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities that await them. The students will participate in a variety of educational programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution of $20.00 per student will be paid directly to the school. We would like to acknowledge the Australian Government for their support of this program, and feel that the excursion will be a rewarding experience for all students. I want to commend all of our students for their diligence, focus and persistence during this demanding time of examinations and assessments. The staff have noted with delight, good time management being practised, students revising with one another during breaks and others taking ownership of their learning by seeking additional assistance at lunch or before or after school. As usual, the amazing Mrs Allum has conducted 'blitz' type Mathematics sessions for students who were keen for more opportunities to hone their skills before school. These were indeed well attended and this added ammunition to Mrs Allum's bold declaration that Mathematics is more important than English! Mrs Allum was well challenged by the rest of the staff at a recent Middle School Assembly! She remains unconvinced. It has also been encouraging to see our students take full advantage of the new library facilities which can be so easily accessed from the Middle School bridge, at our doorstep. At lunch, with a MS Home Room Teacher and a Leader, students are visiting the Bay Room to read, to play Scrabble, Chess or Cathedral and to work at the computers. The inviting furniture, the bright colours and the tree tops view have ensured a lovely ambience and a much sought after space. Year 8 students have relished the recent introduction of one-to-one iPads in their Home Rooms. This mobile technology allows them and teachers to invest more class time analysing, synthesising and evaluating issues and less time gathering information. Classroom discourse is now much more focused on higher order thinking which is substantially more effective for our students. The iPads will also be an invaluable tool as Year 8 undertake their major work before graduating from Middle School, their independent research task on an issue of their choice. Middle School The Biggest Morning Tea On 11 May, Middle School participated in the Biggest Morning Tea. They raised $460 for the Cancer Council. A big thank you to all students and parents for their yummy contributions. Stitches Girl’s Fellowship Group If you were to walk past Middle School on a Friday during lunch, you would spy a group of creative young girls (and a few grandmothers!) keeping an old art form alive. Knitting is back in vogue! “Stitches” is the Middle School Girl’s Fellowship Group and we meet every Friday to learn how to knit and share in God’s fellowship with each other. Our current knitting goal is to make squares which we will stitch together for baby blankets. The blankets will go with the Vanuatu Mission team in July and be given to the women who live in the mountains. Although Vanuatu is a warm climate, children born in the mountains have very high mortality rates, as the unpredictable cold weather can bring on fatal pneumonia. The Girl’s group is open to all mothers, aunts and grandmothers who would like to chat and knit! We meet from 1 – 1:30pm every Friday, so dust off your old needles and wool and come along for ‘Stitches’. Mrs Claire Deck
